Fulham eyeing "outstanding" £34m star who’s scored two Craven Cottage goals

Fulham are now keeping tabs on an “outstanding” £34m striker who has previously scored two goals at Craven Cottage, according to a report.

Raul Jimenez's future in doubt

Jimenez has been in resurgent form this season, with nine goals and three assists to his name in the Premier League, but there is still doubt surrounding the Mexican’s future, with his current contract set to expire at the end of the season.

The 33-year-old is still waiting to hear whether Marco Silva wants to extend his deal beyond the summer, having shown signs he is back at the level he was at before suffering a skull fracture in 2020.

The Cottagers are seemingly yet to make a decision on whether to keep hold of the striker, with Silva perhaps keen to make sure he continues to perform at his current level, and there are now signs the manager could also look to bring in a new option in the summer.

Europa League club make first move for "fantastic" £17m Fulham player

The 28-year-old is viewed as a key target for the summer, and the first steps have been taken to get a deal done.

According to a report from The Boot Room, Fulham are one of a number of Premier League clubs keeping tabs on AS Roma forward Tammy Abraham, who is currently on loan at AC Milan.

West Ham United, Everton, Newcastle United and Nottingham Forest also hold an interest in Abraham, alongside Championship promotion-hopefuls Leeds United, so there may be a real battle for his signature by the time summer comes around.

The AC Milan loanee is said to be keen on a return to the Premier League, as he is looking to impress Thomas Tuchel and get back into contention for the England squad ahead of the 2026 World Cup.

Roma paid £34m to sign the ex-Chelsea man in 2021, and while it is currently unclear what sort of fee they would be looking to receive this summer, they would seemingly be willing to sanction his departure, given the decision to loan the 27-year-old to Milan.

"Outstanding" Abraham could be a quality signing

The Englishman has often been utilised as a substitute this season, but he has impressed in the cup competitions, scoring in Milan’s 3-2 Italian Super Cup triumph over rivals Inter, while also bagging three goals in two Italian Cup outings.

Henry Winter lauded the striker as “outstanding” during his time with Roma, and he has previously impressed in England, reaching the 15-goal mark in the Premier League with Chelsea in the 2019-20 campaign.

The London-born forward has a 100% win record in his previous matches against Fulham, and he scored two goals at Craven Cottage for Bristol City during the 2016-17 season.

If Jimenez continues to play at his current level between now and the end of the season, the veteran striker will definitely have earned a contract extension, but Abraham has proven himself in England previously, and could be a top signing for the Cottagers.

Afghanistan and Ireland set to renew old rivalry at Super 12s

After having battled each other for Associate supremacy throughout the 2010s, the sides come together for their first meeting in a T20 World Cup proper

Peter Della Penna27-Oct-20224:54

O’Brien: ‘Huge game for Ireland after the England win’

Big pictureOn geographical terms, Afghanistan and Ireland are perhaps two of the most peculiar rivals across cricket, but the intensity of this rivalry was borne out of a battle for Associate supremacy throughout the 2010s before both sides were elevated to Test status in 2017. Whether locked in a virtual dead heat in that era, or joined at the hip in the time since then as the fresh faces of the Full-Member society, these two sides know each other better than most at this tournament.Ireland and Afghanistan faced off in three consecutive tournament finals at the Men’s T20 World Cup Qualifier in 2010, 2012 and 2013, of which the men in green won the latter two. Those are part of the 23 times these sides have met before in the format since their first encounter in 2010. Remarkably though, this will be the first time they face off in a T20 World Cup proper.Barring those back-to-back wins in the finals of the qualifier, Afghanistan have dominated the rivalry, thanks in large part to Ireland’s inability to negotiate Rashid Khan. But the tide shifted this past summer in Belfast when Ireland took a five-match series by a 3-2 margin. Rashid only took one wicket in the three matches that Ireland won, highlighting a simple equation that has often determined the fate of the result over the years. Rashid takes wickets – Afghanistan wins. Ireland sees him off – Ireland wins.Form guide Afghanistan: LLLLW (last five completed matches, most recent result first)
Ireland: WLWWLIn the spotlightFor most of his career, Ireland captain Andy Balbirnie batted at No. 3. But since Kevin O’Brien was dropped following Ireland’s disastrous performance in the 2021 T20 World Cup in the UAE, Balbirnie has moved himself into the opening role and has justified the decision by doubling his prior career tally of four T20I half-centuries. The most recent of those came against England at the MCG, and he also served as a catalyst for the opening round win over West Indies that took them into the Super 12s with 37 off 23 balls.Rahmanullah Gurbaz was the best six-hitter in the Asia Cup, clearing the ropes on 12 occasions to make 152 runs at a strike rate of 163. It might take that kind of muscle to clear the ropes at the MCG. He was also one of only three players to score a half-century for Afghanistan during the five-match series held in Belfast in August.Rashid Khan vs Ireland batters could be a key contest at the MCG•ICC via Getty Images

Team newsGeorge Dockrell has recovered from Covid-19 – he played anyway against England and Sri Lanka after testing positive – and should be fine to go against Afghanistan. It’s unlikely Ireland will change the winning combination that saw them beat England at the same ground.Ireland (probable): 1 Paul Stirling, 2 Andy Balbirnie (capt.), 3 Lorcan Tucker (wk), 4 Harry Tector, 5 Curtis Campher, 6 George Dockrell, 7 Gareth Delany, 8 Mark Adair, 9 Barry McCarthy, 10 Fionn Hand, 11 Josh LittleAfghanistan too are likely to stick with the same combination that took the field five days earlier against England despite a losing effort.Afghanistan (probable): 1 Hazratullah Zazai, 2 Rahmanullah Gurbaz (wk), 3 Ibrahim Zadran, 4 Usman Ghani, 5 Najibullah Zadran, 6 Mohammad Nabi (capt.), 7 Azmatullah Omarzai, 8 Rashid Khan, 9 Mujeeb Ur Rahman, 10 Fareed Ahmad, 11 Fazalhaq FarooqiPitch and conditionsThe MCG has favored seamers in this tournament and historically favors chasing sides with 10 out of 16 men’s T20I matches won by the team batting second. The decision to chase may be even more enhanced by the forecast for Friday. Following the rain that halted England’s chase against Ireland and forced Afghanistan’s match against New Zealand to be washed out entirely, an 80% chance of showers is forecast from 8 am until 8 pm on Friday.Stats and triviaHazratullah Zazai needs 33 runs to get to 1000 in T20Is. Nobody has more runs or a better average for Afghanistan against Ireland in T20Is than Zazai, who has made 466 at an average of 51.77, including a famous 162 not out off 62 balls at Dehradun in 2019.Paul Stirling has an equally enviable record at the top of the order in this rivalry, scoring nearly 20% (614) of his T20I career runs (3133) against Afghanistan. He’s saved his best for ICC tournaments against Afghanistan. Two of his four half-centuries in 22 innings against Afghanistan came in Player-of-the-Match performances to win the final of the ICC T20 World Cup Qualifier.Quotes”I’ve seen a lot of rain in my time playing cricket, and I’ve never been happier to see that rain come down when it did.”
“We’re not just here to participate but here to win matches. We’ve got players and a squad that can do that.”

Wrexham now battling to sign in-demand forward after scouts already sent

Whilst competing for another yet another promotion, Wrexham have reportedly already turned their attention towards the summer transfer window and one particular forward.

Wrexham transfer news

By this stage, many believed that Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney would be long gone after a failed project. Almost four later and two promotions later, however, and the Welsh side are competing for yet another promotion to the Championship and stealing even more headlines on the transfer front.

Using their Hollywood fame once again, Wrexham welcomed their latest impressive recruit in Jay Rodriguez at the end of the January transfer window, with the former Premier League forward swapping Burnley for League One in a shock move.

Speaking to the club website, Rodriguez expressed his delight over the move, saying: “I’m made up to join the Club. I can’t wait to get out on the training pitch and meet everyone.

“I hope I can use my experience to help every single player in the squad and gain something from the group as well. To join the story that has evolved at Wrexham with clear targets is exciting for me.”

Burnley striker Jay Rodriguez.

Meanwhile, as an experienced forward arrives, a rising star could follow in his footsteps. According to Football Insider, Wrexham are now battling to sign Oliver Lynch who’s enjoyed an impressive season on loan from Luton Town at National League South side Hemel Hempstead.

Scoring four goals in five games, the 19-year-old reportedly attracted the attention of Wrexham’s scouts who were sent to watch him in action alongside the likes of West Bromwich Albion. At 6’5 and in the mood for goals, Lynch is undoubtedly one to watch in the coming months.

"Unbelievable" Lynch could become Mullin heir

As impressive as Wrexham’s arrivals have been in recent years, the likes of Steven Fletcher, Rodriguez and Paul Mullin are not getting any younger. In fact, all are in their 30s – highlighting the need for younger, fresher faces in Wales. And that’s where Lynch could come in.

Following such impressive form at Hemel Hempstead, the teenager has earned deserved praise from manager Lee Allinson, who told Hemel Today after watching his forward score in a recent victory over Farnborough Town: “We do our due diligence on players and Lynchy was one I kept my eye on after I’d faced him with Hendon against Dulwich.

“I like him, he’s a handful and I thought he was immense today and him and Joe [Iaciofano] worked tirelessly to give people a moment’s rest. He also scored an unbelievable goal and could have had another one just before half-time as well.”

Whilst it would be easy to rule a League One side out of the race to sign a young forward who’s attracting interest from the Championship’s top six, Wrexham are no usual League One side and their power to attract players needs no reiterating around the EFL.

Party officials said he was struck in the shin but that he was in stable condition

Former captain and prime minister of Pakistan Imran Khan suffered injuries to his leg after being shot at in a protest march he was leading in Wazirabad in Punjab. Nine other people are believed to have been injured and one person died in the attack.Imran was taken to hospital soon after and party officials later said he was struck in the right shin and had suffered bone damage from the pellets but that he was in stable condition.Pakistani TV channels aired footage that amounted to a confession from the alleged gunman who said Imran was the target. Imran, 70, was leading a protest rally on to the capital Islamabad, demanding general elections after he was ousted from power in April this year.Imran – one of the game’s great allrounders who led Pakistan to their 1992 World Cup win – was standing atop a large container truck with other party officials when shots were fired, forcing them to duck for cover. TV footage in the immediate aftermath showed Imran conscious, with a bandage on his right leg, just above the foot, as he was moved to another vehicle and eventually taken to hospital.

“He is being taken to a hospital in Lahore, but he is not seriously wounded,” Asad Umar, a party leader, told reporters. “A bullet hit him in the leg.”The attack happened less than a week after Imran began his march from Lahore along with thousands of supporters. Imran was elected prime minister of Pakistan in August 2018. But he faced a no-confidence motion from parliament earlier this year and was forced out, since when he has been leading a series of protest marches.

Dean Elgar applauds his pacers for firing warning shots in short Gabba burst

South Africa captain feels his attack managed to open up “old scars” by roughing up Australia’s top order despite a tiny target to work with

Despite losing the Gabba Test in two days, Dean Elgar is confident South Africa still managed to fire a warning shot against Australia with their strong pace pack.South Africa’s four quicks took 14 Australian wickets in the match, including four in the successful second-innings chase of 34. Had South Africa scored “another 60 runs”, Elgar said, they might have been able to claim the unlikeliest of victories. Still, Elgar believes they’ve shown the Australian line-up what they are made of.”It was to try and open some old scars, to bring in our intensity and maybe get them three or four down so those batters go to Melbourne with maybe less confidence,” Elgar said. “It worked out nicely. The result aside, it was one of the game plans that worked out for us over the last two days. I can’t say there were many.”Related

South Africa put their best and their worst on show at Gabba

In particular, the short-ball strategy worked for Kagiso Rabada, who has snapped out of his T20 funk (he was South Africa’s least successful bowler at the T20 World Cup) and got into his role as Test spearhead. He finished the Brisbane Test with eight wickets and is now the leading bowler in Test cricket in 2022, with 45 wickets at 20.04, two ahead of Nathan Lyon.”It gives us confidence,” Elgar said. “He is a massive figure for us, not just in our bowling group but in our 16-man squad. When he puts his hand up like that it’s difficult not to follow.”Among Rabada’s victims was David Warner, whom he removed for a golden duck in the first innings and for 3 in the second. Warner is the only batter Rabada dismissed twice in the match and he has now got rid of him six times in seven Tests. Rabada targeting Warner appeared to be a well-planned tactic to take advantage of a player in a slump. Since his last Test fifty against Pakistan in Lahore, Warner has scored 169 runs in 10 Test innings, and his average in 2022 of 20.61 is the lowest for a calendar year in his Test career. But Elgar said South Africa were not specifically going after him alone. “It’s not just him. It’s all of them. We are always trying to find another way to have an edge over your opposition. If this was a way of getting into their minds further, brilliant. I know a guy like KG is the most feared bowler we have here, purely because of his reputation and record. If he has got that confidence running into the next Test, it’s brilliant for us.”Elgar noted how the rest of the attack respond when Rabada is at his best. “What you find is that really got [Anrich] Nortje fired up as well and he was starting to crank it up even more,” he said. “Hopefully that can inspire our batting unit to get their heads right and to knuckle down and get some performance under their belt for us.”Well documented as South Africa’s weaker suit, their line-up slumped to a new low in Brisbane. They were dismissed for under 200 in both innings to make 2022 the year in which they’ve racked up their most sub-200 scores: eight times. They’ve had a lean World Test Championship run, with only two centuries in the campaign, the least among the competing teams, and they appear to lack both confidence and the ability to apply themselves. Still, Elgar defended their latest blowouts.”The guys in the change-room have played enough cricket to know this was one of those instances where we need to be honest and real about what’s just happened,” he said. “It’s not like our guys were throwing wickets away. We were getting absolutely jaffered out and they bowled properly,” he said. “That’s the way I will be approaching that. Coming into this game, our batters were confident. We prepared well and we played the warm-up game. It’s not like the confidence was low.”With a week between games, Elgar won’t be demanding any extra nets or time with the analyst. “I can’t see us hitting more balls and becoming better cricketers. We have played enough cricket in our personal careers and guys know their games really well, so hitting another 100 or 200 balls is not going to make you a better cricketer,” he said. “I speak from a personal point of view. It’s just one of those games where you failed. I am still confident going into the next one. We will definitely break it down and have chats. I would rather see the guys not do anything until we get to Melbourne. That’s just me.”He also hopes they don’t get too wrapped up in their own heads and enjoy the occasion of being in Australia over the festive season, which no South African team has done since 2008. “Guys need to tap into their mental spaces, which can be the biggest enemy, because you can really withdraw yourself instead of dealing with what’s happened and facing it,” he said.Asked if South Africa would consider changes to their XI, including an extra batter, Elgar said “all options are on the table” but repeated his preference for a six-five split, to accommodate the specialist spinner. “The option of seven-four was a talking point but I like having a specialist spinner. We didn’t even get to day three let alone four or five where the wickets are going to spin so Kesh’s [Keshav Maharaj] role was nullified by the game being over in two days,” he said. “I am still very much a captain who wants a spinner because he gives us a lot of control and allows our seamers to have a break where we can rotate them from one end but all options are open going into the next one.”Elgar confirmed that if South Africa were to include an extra batter, “Theunis de Bruyn is the next batter in”.
