Romano: Man Utd bid £20m+ to sign versatile star keen on Old Trafford move

Manchester United have made a bid worth more than £20m to sign a versatile new player for Ruben Amorim, and he’s keen on a move to Old Trafford.

Man Utd transfer rumours

The Red Devils and INOES are yet to make a marquee first-team signing in 2025, despite there being plenty of rumours regarding potential incomings.

Sporting CP defender Ousmane Diomande has been mooted as a target with Amorim requesting the services of the centre-back and those in Manchester reportedly preparing a £50m+ offer. Elsewhere, United have “expressed concrete interest” in Borussia Dortmund forward Jamie Bynoe-Gittens, who was previously on the books of Manchester City.

However, there are also a plethora of stars who could depart Old Trafford before the February 3 deadline. Marcus Rashford continues to be linked with numerous clubs across Europe, with his preferred destination being a move to Barcelona.

Antony looks set to be closing in on a loan move to Real Betis, whereas Alejandro Garnacho is of permanent interest to Serie A side Napoli. Tyrell Malacia is another who could depart in the coming days, with left-back continuing to be a problem area at Old Trafford.

Lecce’s Patrick Dorgu has been heavily linked with a move to Manchester as INEOS look to solve that area of the pitch in Amorim’s 3-4-3 system, and a new update has now emerged.

Man Utd make offer to sign Patrick Dorgu

According to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, Man Utd have sent a formal bid to sign Dorgu from Lecce. The financial package sent by the Red Devils to the Serie A side was worth €27m (£22.8m) plus add-ons, however, that has seemingly been rejected by Lecce.

Dorgu is also wanted by Napoli ahead of the summer, however, the player is keen on a move to Old Trafford.

The 20-year-old, already a four-cap Denmark international, can play as a left-back, left midfielder or even as a right winger, so would give Amorim a versatile option should he move to Manchester.

As per Transfermarkt, Dorgu’s market value has rocketed from €400,000 to a career-high €20m in the space of 18 months, so he appears to be a star in the making.

He’s made more than 50 senior appearances for Lecce after joining in 2023 from FC Nordsjaelland, the majority of which have come as a left-back and was hailed by international teammate Joachim Andersen, who said:

“Dorgu is an offensive back with lots of power and speed. He is left-footed, which helps us a lot. We also have VK (Victor Kristiansen), who is left-footed, but Dorgu is a bit more offensive.

“I see they [Dorgu and Morten Frendrup] have a lot of energy. They have a lot of audacity, and they are slightly different types of players than we have seen in the national team in the last several years.”

Third Test 'like a World Cup final' – Dean Elgar

Captain ready for “biggest Test so far” in his tenure as SA chase crucial WTC points

It’s nine months away from the World Test Championship final but South Africa are already playing what captain Dean Elgar has labelled “pretty much like a World Cup final,” in the deciding Test against England. With the series locked 1-1 and South Africa sitting second on the WTC points table, 12 behind Australia, the significance of this match has been so heightened that Elgar sees it as among the most crucial Tests this group of players has been involved in and he wants them to show that in their performance.”It’s the biggest Test so far in my captaincy period. I reckon it’s the biggest. I think the players know that, they sense that,” Elgar said. “We’ve got to play every game like it’s your last. This is one of those where you have to play like it’s your last. You have to empty the tank more times than none. You can’t leave anything behind. You’ve got to leave everything on that field. It’s huge. It’s massive for us.”For Elgar, the importance of this Test is three-fold: 1. It’s an opportunity for this squad to win a series in England for the first time after the golden generation did it in 2012 and 2008; 2. It will be a big step towards securing a WTC final spot and also feeling ready to play in a one-off red-ball final if they get there; 3. It’s the second-last time South Africa will play a three-Test series (Australia at the end of the year is the last) before 2026 and some of the current group may not be playing then which means tie-breakers are not going to be a feature of the next cycle and should be relished now.”I’ve never experienced a Test series win against England in 10 years of playing. It would be an unreal feeling for myself and massive for the younger guys in our change-room,” Elgar said. “From a confidence point of view, it can kind of give us a little edge going into the potential World Test Championship final. We are in a very good spot. We know if we manage to win this game, we are back at No.1 which will be really nice. It’s a very very big game for us.”Related

Hundred done but Test series decider could yet satisfy short-form thrill seekers

There’s rain around and an inevitability of interruptions, but Elgar dismissed thoughts that the hype could turn into a soggy draw, given the fast-forward way both teams approach their game. “There’s definitely going to be a winner. With the styles of cricket we’ve been playing, there is definitely going to be a result,” he said. “We can’t control the weather but I am pretty confident there’s going to be a victor and there will be someone that loses. Going into this Test one-all, it’s pretty much like a World Cup final for us. That’s the way I am viewing it. We are going in with a result in mind and we’ve got to give our best effort for that.”The teams come into this fixture after an 11-day break (lengthened from nine days because the second Test ended inside three) during which South Africa “did not pick a bat,” Keegan Petersen said yesterday, or presumably any balls besides golf balls. They set up camp at the Belfry Resort, half-an-hour north-east of Birmingham and “played a bit of golf and we did a bit of go-carting as a team,” Elgar said. Both were competitive. “We had a few days away from the game, out of the noise, the hustle and bustle and just trying to refocus and realign and remind ourselves why we are here. We are here to win a Test series.”To do that, South Africa have to bat better than they have done in this series, and probably better than they have since Elgar took over. They’ve only crossed 400 once in the 11 Tests since he was named permanent captain, against Bangladesh in Gqeberha, and in the five times they’ve scored 300-plus, it’s the lower order that got them there. “Upfront it’s pretty tough. We haven’t executed the runs as of yet,” Elgar said.Dean Elgar and Ryan Rickelton talk during a nets session at Lord’s•PA Images via Getty Images

South Africa’s top six – which is certain to have one change with Ryan Rickelton coming in for the injured Rassie van der Dussen, but could have two if Khaya Zondo replaces Aiden Markram – is under pressure and Elgar expects them to perform. “I understand how much top-order runs means for a team to set up a chance of victory. We’ve spoken at length about this topic. It’s now time to walk the walk.”Elgar is fit to lead the charge as he brushed off a knock to the shoulder administered by his coach Mark Boucher on the toughest training session before the match, which South Africa routinely undertake a few days before the Test. “We have competition day, which is two or three days out from the Test. Our head coach was in the competition yesterday,” he explained. “It’s not the first blow I’ve taken. I’ve learnt how to get over those things.”Both he and South Africa have also “got over,” the defeat in Manchester and won’t be gloating about their win at Lord’s as they isolate the Oval Test as one for the ages. “We know it (the Old Trafford loss) wasn’t our proudest moment. You have to go through the grievance and jog on. You have to. You can’t be pining for too long in Test cricket,” Elgar said. “We are still pretty fresh. We’ve only had six days of Test cricket. With regards to freshness, we’ve got no excuse. With regards to hunger, we’ve got no excuse. Guys have to stand up and bring out their best game.”

Their next McBurnie: Sheffield United in the race to land "heroic" talent

Sheffield United supporters would been relieved to see Leeds United only pick up a drab point away at Burnley on Monday night after the Blades fell to a surprise 3-0 defeat to Hull City.

As a result of the Whites playing out an unmemorable 0-0 draw at Turf Moor, Chris Wilder’s men are only two points off the Championship summit, with a big win away at Derby County needed next for the South Yorkshire outfit to get their promotion efforts back on track.

SheffieldUnitedmanagerChris Wilder reacts after the match

Nobody can accuse United of being quiet in the transfer window either in their bid to return to the Premier League, with another potential deal on the cards taking the total of incomings up to a sizeable four.

Sheffield United interested in deal for EFL star

As per an exclusive report from the Sheffield Star, the promotion chasers are keen on adding Harry Darling to their ever-growing group before next month’s abrupt deadline as Wilder goes about strengthening his defensive numbers.

Darling has generated quite a lot of interest this transfer window to date owing to his Swansea City contract expiring this summer, with Bristol City and Birmingham City previously looking at the 6 foot 2 centre-back before the Blades started sniffing around.

With Harry Souttar out of action for the rest of the season due to a ruptured Achilles tendon, Darling would very much gift Wilder another rock in the heart of defence away from the injury-stricken loanee.

Moreover, United have tasted success when buying from the Swans in the past, with Oli McBurnie turning into a fan’s favourite at Bramall Lane after waving goodbye to Wales.

What Darling could offer Sheffield United

Before delving deeper into Darling’s strengths as a centre-back, the 25-year-old can only hope to be as popular as McBurnie was in South Yorkshire if he does make the switch shortly.

In particular, his efforts during the 2022/23 campaign still stick out to this day, as his crucial 13 strikes from 38 league games helped the Blades push up to the Premier League.

Darling possesses a similar goalscoring knack even when lining up as a defender for Luke Williams’ men, with the Swansea number six helping himself to nine goals in the Championship across his impressive career to date.

In the past, Wilder has loved working with defenders who can fight and battle but also have the ability to fire home a killer goal, with Darling perhaps becoming his next Jack O’Connell or Harry Egan in that sense, alongside also being an arguable upgrade on the unfortunate Souttar.

Looking at the table above, Darling does better his injured counterpart in many different areas this season in the Championship, with more accurate passes managed per contest as a competent performer out from the back, alongside other numbers going in his favour.

Indeed, the “heroic” ace – as he was labelled by Williams earlier this campaign – averages more ball recoveries as a tenacious presence, whilst his numbers in terms of clearances registered and duels being won fall flat just when weighed up next to the 6 foot 7 man mountain.

Wilder will pray that Darling’s signature can be won, therefore, as he looks like the best possible replacement for Souttar in the short-term, with the added impressive qualities of being able to join in with attacks and spray the ball about with more ease.

United fans will be blown away by how much business has been done so far this window, with plenty more expected before this coming Monday’s dramatic deadline.

Fit-again Harshal adds more strings to T20 bow

He says the backing from the team management has helped “take a bit of pressure off” as he makes a return to India’s squad

Shashank Kishore18-Sep-20225:50

How Harshal Patel has used his injury to become even better

Training without the fear of competition has been liberating for Harshal Patel.Having recovered from a rib injury that ruled him out of the Asia Cup that just finished in the UAE, Harshal is looking forward to life on the road again, which will soon include a maiden World Cup appearance. But first he has to deal with the T20Is against Australia starting on Tuesday in Mohali.Related

Harshal has spent the past four weeks in rehabilitation at the National Cricket Academy in Bengaluru. The first two weeks were spent working on his physical conditioning, before he resumed bowling. One of his key focus areas has been to be ahead of the curve and continue as the X-factor bowler teams yearn for.”I want to be tighter with my execution,” Harshal told ESPNcricinfo in August. “And I achieved that more or less last IPL [19 wickets in 15 matches]. I will continue to strive for that. If I’m bowling one or two bad balls out of 24, [I want to see] if I can completely eliminate that.”You’re not going to be able to do that every single game, but if I can do that in two games out of five, or three games out of five, that will be a goal worth striving for.”Known for his terrific slower balls and a potent dipping yorker, Harshal vaulted to the top of the wicket-taker’s charts at IPL 2021 and has ridden that wave all the way to an India cap last November.Nearly a year on, he’s emerged as a key member of India’s T20I arsenal. The time off due to injury, he believes, has helped him explore different facets of his craft apart from working on their execution, which is the “tougher bit.” Two of those areas are his new-ball bowling and variations in lengths.”I’ve explored a little bit in terms of the lengths I can bowl with the slower ball,” he explained. “Usually when I bowl the slower balls, it’s mainly fuller or at the good length. But now I’ve started bowling more shorter slower balls which are working out very well for me. That’s one thing obviously.”I’ve also been working on my new-ball skills for a while. I started doing that mid-IPL. Just because in the IPL, what I was supposed to do [mainly middle-overs and death bowling], all my skills were top notch, so I didn’t need to work on them.”So, every time I’d go to practice, I’d take a new ball and start bowling with it because it’s good to have a skill and not need it than the other way round,. It’s just something I’ve been working on and if I get an opportunity, for India or for RCB [Royal Challengers Bangalore], I would love to do that.”Harshal is deeply analytical, and challenges himself to keep getting better. That the team management has been clear of what they expect of him has helped, too.Harshal Patel: My ability to bat at No. 8 is something they [team management] really value•Getty Images

In the 30 T20s this year, he has bowled 54 overs in the middle phase for 19 wickets at an economy rate of 6.61 and 41.1 overs at the death for 18 wickets at 10.17. In comparison, in the 11 innings where he came on in the first six, he has averaged just one over per game.”They [India coach Rahul Dravid and captain Rohit Sharma] have been nothing but supportive,” Harshal said. “Whatever the team ethos is, they have taken precedence over individuals, which is a great thing.”They told me my role exactly. They said, ‘we want you to be able to bowl in all three phases, not just middle and death’. They’ve been bowling me once at the end of the powerplay every single game just to get used to that.”It isn’t just his bowling that Harshal has been working on. He takes great pride in his ball-striking too. “My ability to bat at No. 8 is something they [team management] really value,” he said.”I have not been working a lot on my batting because of time constraints, because you’re constantly in competition. But during rehab, I’ve had a chance to hit 500-700 balls over two-three weeks. It’s something I’ve wanted to work on for quite a while because I really want to contribute in that capacity as well.”What has helped along the way is clarity of roles and backing from the captain and the coach. Harshal believes this is critical for individuals from a mental standpoint, because it helps in better decision-making, especially when players return from injuries.”It does take a bit of pressure off you,” he said. “Because sometimes people make foolish decisions when they’re returning to play. They’re either trying to do too much or trying to push too hard because they feel that their place is in danger or for whatever reason.”But if you know for a fact the team management will remember what you’ve done prior to getting injured, and those performances and contributions are not forgotten, then that gives you a sense of calm or comfort that once you go back into the team – obviously you will have to perform again and again and that goes for every single cricketer – you know that you will hold that place in the team.”As Harshal looks ahead, the mention of ‘World Cup’ brings a smile to his face. He grew up like any other kid dreaming of playing in one, and in about a month’s time, it will all come true.”Obviously I am super excited,” he said. “I will get nervous at some point, but at this point of time, I’m just excited. The two World Cups India have won in 2007 and 2011, I vividly remember where I was and what I was doing.”After we won the World Cup, like every kid, we took our scooters and went onto the roads to dance and jump and shout. It would be great if I could play and if we end up winning the World Cup, to have that circle completed would be a great feeling. But [right now] it’s going to be a lot of excitement and nervous energy.”

Levy stance revealed as £120k-per-week Tottenham player gets offer to leave

Tottenham Hotspur chairman Daniel Levy has adopted a firm behind-the-scenes stance, as one member of Ange Postecoglou’s squad gets out-of-window offers to leave the club.

Tottenham refuse to sanction January exits amid injury crisis

Postecoglou is currently without a host of first-team players – including Cristian Romero, Guglielmo Vicario, Dominic Solanke, Wilson Odobert, Destiny Udogie, James Maddison, Brennan Johnson, Timo Werner and Radu Dragusin – prompting Spurs to not sanction any January exits.

However, it has mostly debilitated Tottenham, who currently sit 14th in the Premier League table after a very disappointing first half of the 2024/2025 campaign.

Even left-back Sergio Reguilon, who was previously outcasted by Postecoglou, has been handed first-team minutes and spots in Tottenham matchday squads lately.

The £120,000-per-week defender was widely tipped to leave N17 in January, with La Liga sides reportedly holding an interest in signing Reguilon as his contract ticks down towards its final months.

There were even murmurs that Reguilon could mutually terminate his Tottenham contract, but those reports have since died down, amid Postecoglou’s need for bodies in every area of the pitch.

The former Real Madrid gem spent time out on loan at Man United and Brentford last season, and while Reguilon currently has a spot in Postecoglou’s matchday squads, it won’t be for long with his deal up at the end of the campaign.

Daniel Levy stance revealed as Sergio Reguilon gets offers to leave Tottenham

According to Spanish newspaper AS, Reguilon has received out-of-window offers from Galatasaray and Besiktas, as the Turkish Süper Lig giants look to prise him away from N17 early.

The Turkish transfer window doesn’t shut until February 12th, meaning that either side could still sign the Spaniard if Spurs give the green-light. However, chairman Levy is currently blocking the left-back’s departure, with the Lilywhites chief reluctant to let him leave.

Udogie isn’t set to return until around midway through this month, according to reliable Tottenham source Paul O’Keefe, so Postecoglou remains in need of Udogie until a fair bit after the Turkish window shuts.

All signs point towards Reguilon staying until the end of 24/25, where he will then be free to find a new club on a Bosman deal. With Udogie expected to potentially return for their game against Man United, his counterpart is a solid alternative in the meantime.

“I’ve been an admirer of Reguilon for some time,” said pundit Noel Whelan in 2021 to Football Insider. “He really stamped his authority on the game and grabbed the winner to show what a quality player he is.”
