While things are looking a little bleak at the moment, Arsenal are still in a position that seemed almost impossible just a few years ago.
Mikel Arteta’s side have gone from languishing in eighth place for back-to-back campaigns to fighting for the Premier League title for the third year on the bounce.
The Spaniard has overseen a massive overhaul of the side he inherited in December 2019, with only a few players like Bukayo Saka and Gabriel Martinelli surviving and continuing to play significant roles in the first team.
Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta.
However, there is another survivor who was a part of the squad during Arteta’s first season, a player who joined the club that summer and was tipped to be a future captain, but now has to be sold for his own sake.
Arsenal's 2019 summer signings
So, before we get to the player in question, let’s examine a couple of other signings made that summer, starting with a player who is unfortunately considered one of the club’s worst additions of all time, Nicolas Pepe.
Under the management of Emery, Arsenal decided to smash their transfer record in July 2019 and spend a whopping £72m on the Ivorian international, who, in their defence, had just scored 23 goals and provided 12 assists in 41 appearances for LOSC Lille.
Unfortunately, as most fans will attest, the talented winger did not show that sort of form in North London, and while he left the club for good last September as a flop, his final tally of 27 goals and 21 assists in 112 appearances isn’t quite as bad as some would have you believe.
In stark contrast, the North Londoners also paid a hefty £27m for a relatively unknown 18-year-old centre-back from Ligue 1 that summer, a young defender who has since established himself as one of the best in the world, William Saliba.
Yes, while he would spend the next three seasons on loan in his home country, the Gunners secured the services of their number two in 2019, and following his competitive debut for the side against Crystal Palace in August 2022, he’s racked up 98 appearances for the team, signed an extension in 2023 and is rumoured to be getting another one soon.
However, the Bondy-born titan wasn’t the only defender signed by the club that summer, but unfortunately, the player in question has followed a path closer to Pepe’s than his in N5, despite being touted as a future captain at one point.
The Arsenal captain that could've been
Arsenal have had a long list of incredible captains over the years, like Tony Adams in the past, the technically brilliant, if a little controversial, Cesc Fàbregas in the early 2010s, the sharpshooting and, actually, just as controversial, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang during Arteta’s earlier tenure, right up to the midfield maestro, that is Martin Odegaard today.
However, in the summer of 2019, the club signed someone who perhaps could have been on that list in another world, Kieran Tierney.
The Scottish left-back joined the North Londoners from Glaswegian giants Celtic that August for around £25m.
First Impressions
What did pundits and fans alike think about their new star signing when they arrived? Football FanCast's 'First Impressions' series has everything you need.
While he hadn’t played outside the Scottish Premiership at that point, there was a lot of excitement about what he could become.
That was largely thanks to his sensational play for the Hoops and the perception people had of him as a hard-working, no-nonsense defender, someone who was a throwback to a bygone era.
Arsenal defender Kieran Tierney.
The then-22-year-old endured a mixed start to his life in the capital, though, as despite looking good on the pitch, he could only make 24 first-team appearances, as injuries kept him sidelined for large parts of the campaign.
The following year was much better in this regard, as while he still suffered a few setbacks, the Douglas-born dynamo made 38 appearances for the first team, in which he scored two goals, provided four assists and was called a “natural leader” by the manager.
The good times wouldn’t last, however, and even though the following season saw former professional Ally McCoist describe him as the “obvious captain” following Aubameyang’s exit, the talented full-back was once again plagued by injuries, and he made just 25 appearances.
Those fitness concerns must have been the final straw for the manager, as that summer, he welcomed in Oleksandr Zinchenko from Manchester City for £32m, and even though the Scotsman managed to avoid injury throughout the campaign, he was limited to just 15 starts and 21 substitute appearances.

With the writing clearly on the wall, the former Celtic star joined Real Sociedad on a season-long loan last year, but as you may have guessed by now, injuries once again reared their ugly head and the 27-year-old was limited to just 26 appearances.
Today, the £110k-per-week full-back is still in North London but hasn’t made a single appearance all season thanks to yet another hamstring problem.
Arsenal defender Kieran Tierney.
Therefore, even though he was once tipped to be the club’s future captain, Arsenal must do what they can to sell Tierney before his contract expires in 2026, for their own sake and his.

Century stand for the second wicket brings visitors to within 153 runs of New Zealand’s first-innings total in Mount Maunganui

Stumps Bangladesh blended smart bowling with patient batting on the second day of the Mount Maunganui Test to keep things in their favour against New Zealand, who wouldn’t be too pleased with their first-innings score of 328, their lowest at home against Bangladesh. But what would have frustrated them more was seeing the visitors reach 175 for 2 at stumps, with Najmul Hossain Shanto and Mahmudul Hasan Joy bringing up half-centuries.Bangladesh became only the second visiting team in the last eight years to bat more than 50 overs for the first two wickets in New Zealand. And by the end of the day, they were just 153 behind. The Bangladesh openers, under fire after a poor Pakistan series, predictably began circumspectly.Shadman Islam’s only forceful shot early on was an authoritative pull off Tim Southee, while Joy struck both his fours before the tea break behind the wicket. They lasted an hour together before Shadman fell for 18 off the first ball after the drinks break, when he chipped one back at Neil Wagner, who had to dive forward to complete the catch.Shanto made a nervous start to his innings, getting struck on the stomach first ball before edging one, which fell short of first slip. At the other end, Joy struggled too, especially against the moving ball. He had luck on his side when Wagner chose not to review an lbw call that ended up showing three reds, perhaps believing it had taken the inside edge.Mehidy Hasan Miraz picked up three wickets on the second day•Getty Images
“It was quite windy today. There was a good noise. It sounded like an inside edge. I asked if he nicked it. The guys behind the stumps said no. Two guys from my end of the stumps said they heard a noise. They said he hit it,” Wagner explained after the day’s play. “I thought if he didn’t hit it, it was dead (plumb). We all made a collective decision. I think it is part of the game. The umpire also thought there was a noise so didn’t give it out. Unfortunately, from what I heard, it is the other way. I guess that’s how it goes.”But Joy was solid with his defensive work, hardly playing at anything outside the off stump, and focusing on picking up runs on the on side whenever the bowlers strayed.Shanto was the busier of the two batters, hitting 64 off 109 balls. He struck seven fours and a slog-swept six that brought up his half-century. He drove the ball well on both sides of the wicket, and his best shot was possibly the cut he played against Wagner, when he moved well outside his leg stump and threaded the ball through gully and point. He fell in the last hour when Wagner got rid of him with a conventional outswinger coming from over the wicket. Shanto’s uppish drive was well caught at gully by Will Young.Earlier in the day, New Zealand lost their last five wickets for 70 runs, with Mehidy Hasan Miraz picking up three of those. He had Kyle Jamieson caught at long-on, Southee at short midwicket, and Wagner caught behind in a burst that kept the home side on the back foot.Henry Nicholls, who made 75 off 127 balls, struck 12 fours in a bid to counter-attack as wickets fell at the other end. He was the last man to go when he fell reverse-sweeping Mominul Haque, caught at short third-man.

Mohammad Amir had yet to play a game in PSL 2022•LPL
Karachi Kings’ floundering PSL campaign has been dealt another blow with the withdrawal of Mohammad Amir and Mohammad Ilyas because of injuries. This robs the 2020 champions of two key bowlers, as they look to recover from three straight losses as a start to their season, and move off the bottom of the table.Amir had yet to play a game in PSL 2022. “Mohammad Amir, who was nursing a side strain for the past week or so, has aggravated his back injury during the rehabilitation process and shall also no longer be available to participate in the remainder of the season,” a franchise statement said.Ilyas had played in all three games, but conceded 71 runs across the six overs he had bowled. He hurt his shoulder in Karachi’s last game, a six-wicket loss to Lahore Qalandars, but returned to bowl again. Now that he’s out of the tournament, Usman Shinwari has been drafted in to replace him.”Mohammad Ilyas, who had a severe shoulder injury, despite which he came back after receiving treatment to bowl two overs in the last match,” the statement said. “MRIs have confirmed the worst and he has been advised rest for the next six weeks or so, and shall be leaving for his home in Peshawar tomorrow evening.”Karachi’s next game is against Peshawar Zalmi on Friday.
Arsenal’s victory against Sporting CP in the Champions League last night makes it back-to-back wins for the club for the first time in almost two months.
Mikel Arteta’s side looked utterly lost just a few weeks ago, but the return of Martin Odegaard and a well-timed international break have seemingly breathed new life into the team.
From attack to defence, the Gunners were immaculate in Lisbon and even managed to keep the sensationally gifted Viktor Gyokeres from adding another goal to his ever-growing tally, unlike Premier League rivals Manchester City.
That said, even though the Swedish international failed to score, he remains one of the most dangerous strikers in Europe, so Arsenal fans should welcome recent reports linking them to another prolific centre-forward who could be their own Gyokeres.
Arsenal transfer news
According to a recent report from Spain, Arsenal have maintained their intense interest in Newcastle United star Alexander Isak.
Alexander Isak looks frustrated for Newcastle
In fact, while the report reiterates the Magpies’ desire to keep the incredible striker beyond this season, it also reveals that Arsenal are increasingly confident that their project and trajectory will be enough to convince the £120k-per-week poacher to join them.
A price is not mentioned in the story, but a report from TEAMtalk earlier this week claimed that the Toon will demand a fee of at least £115m for their goalscoring machine, making it a potential club-record deal for the Londoners.
Alexander Isak celebrates for Newcastle
It would be an incredibly costly and challenging transfer to get over the line, but given Isak’s unreal ability, it would be worth pursuing, especially as he could become the Gunners’ own Gyokeres.
Why Isak would be Arsenal's Gyokeres
So, just why would Isak be Arsenal’s answer to Gyokeres? Well, it’s two-fold, and the first reason is incredibly straightforward: they’re both Swedish.
Yes, like the Sporting ace, the Toon star is an incredibly important player for the Swedish national team and, since winning his first senior cap back in January 2017, has gone on to make 50 appearances for the team, in which he’s scored 15 goals and provided six assists.
For his part, the former Coventry City star has now won 26 caps, in which he’s also found the back of the net on 15 occasions and provided six assists for good measure.
This brings us to the second point of comparison between the two players: the simple fact that they’re both powerful and prolific goalscorers.
For example, since moving to Portugal, Gyokeres has scored 67 goals and provided 19 assists in 70 appearances, which equates to a frankly absurd average of a goal involvement every 0.81 games.
Now, it’s true that the former Real Sociedad marksman cannot match that level of output over the last season and a bit.
However, considering he’s been playing in arguably the most challenging league in world football for a team that finished in mid-table last season, he’s done exceptionally well.

For example, since the start of last season, the Magpies’ attacking “nightmare,” as dubbed by Alan Shearer, has scored 30 goals and provided four assists in 52 appearances, which works out to a goal involvement every 1.52 games on average.
Ultimately, while Sporting’s goalscoring phenom is outperforming every striker in Europe at the moment, Isak is still an outrageously gifted centre-forward and has already proven that he can regularly put the ball in the back of the net in the Premier League.
Therefore, Arsenal should do what they can to sign the Newcastle ace as soon as possible, as with him in the side they won’t have to bother chasing Gyokeres with the rest of Europe.

Tim David signs £50,000 Southern Brave deal as teams finalise retentions

Tom Banton, Joe Clarke, Liam Dawson and Laurie Evans are among the English players set to be available in the Hundred draft on March 30 after failing to agree retentions with their respective teams, ESPNcricinfo understands.Tim David, who was signed by Mumbai Indians for INR 8.25 crore (£810,000 approx.) at last weekend’s IPL auction, has been retained for just £50,000 by Southern Brave, while Andre Russell and Kagiso Rabada are among the biggest overseas names set to be available in the draft.Men’s teams have been negotiating with players and their representatives since December 1 and had the option to retain up to 10 players who held contracts at any stage for the inaugural season in 2021. The retention window closes on Wednesday and signings will be confirmed officially by the ECB next week.Men’s wages have increased by 25% across each salary band, but coaches and general managers struggled to fit every player they wanted to retain into their draft grid, which sees a maximum of two players paid the same wage in any given squad.Related

Many of the players who have been released were offered contracts by teams but turned them down. Some are looking for a new team after a lack of opportunities last season, while others will hope to earn a higher salary, taking advantage of the uncertainty around overseas players’ availability and the resulting demand for domestic players. Each team will be allowed to use one right-to-match (RTM) card at the draft, which can be used to re-sign a player from their 2021 squad, so long as they can match the salary for which another team has tried to sign them. Picks will be made in reverse order of finishing position, with London Spirit picking first and Southern Brave last. The availability of overseas players has been a major stumbling block, with continued uncertainty over the Future Tours Programme. India’s tour to West Indies, Afghanistan’s to Ireland, Pakistan’s to Sri Lanka and Bangladesh’s to Zimbabwe are all due to overlap in part while South Africa’s Test series in England is due to start halfway through. The Hundred runs from August 3 to September 3 with the women’s competition starting on August 11.Australia are also due to play a limited-overs series against Zimbabwe at the end of August – though they may well field a weakened side – while the Caribbean Premier League and the Asia Cup could clash with the knockout stages. As a result, most teams have released several overseas players. Teams are allowed three overseas players in both their squad and their playing XI.Changes to England’s central contracts list have opened up free spots for some teams, with Mark Wood, Jonny Bairstow, Zak Crawley and Dawid Malan among the players who will be allocated centrally by the ECB rather than paid directly through the draft mechanism. The four players on white-ball-only contracts – Moeen Ali, Eoin Morgan, Adil Rashid and Jason Roy – will still be paid through the draft and have all been retained.Southern BraveThe defending champions have retained most of the squad that took them to the title last year. Tymal Mills, Jake Lintott, George Garton and Alex Davies have all earned pay rises while Chris Jordan rejected the promise of a lucrative offer in the draft from elsewhere in order to stay put.James Vince will continue as captain but Liam Dawson, Danny Briggs and Delray Rawlins have all been released. With Jofra Archer unlikely to play much Test cricket this summer as the ECB manage his return from a long-term elbow injury, he could be available for most of the season.David only played twice in 2021, scoring 15 off 6 balls and running Liam Livingstone out in the final, but has been retained on the cheap after his remarkable form around the world. Marcus Stoinis, who missed the inaugural season, has also been retained and while Quinton de Kock has been released, multiple sources suggested Brave, who have the last first-round pick, will use their RTM card if another team tries to sign him ahead of them in the first round of the draft.Tim David won the Hundred with Southern Brave•Getty Images
Birmingham PhoenixPhoenix topped the group-stage table in 2021, thanks in no small part to their decision to pick Liam Livingstone in the first round of the inaugural draft in 2019. He has been retained for next season, along with the core of last season’s squad which included Moeen Ali, Will Smeed and Benny Howell.Shaheen Shah Afridi was unavailable in 2021 and may be again this season but could be retained if Phoenix look to secure him for future seasons, while Tom Helm, Adam Hose and Dillon Pennington have been released. Tom Abell’s future is unclear but he has attracted interest from other teams and was disappointed to be left out of the side for last season’s final.Trent RocketsLewis Gregory struggled with the bat and had his bowling contributions limited by a back injury last season but has been retained and is likely to continue as captain. The majority of Rockets’ Nottinghamshire core – including Alex Hales, Steven Mullaney, Tom Moores and Matthew Carter – have been retained, while Rashid Khan will be retained as an overseas player despite uncertainty over his availability.Luke Wood has been retained and Marchant de Lange will return as an overseas player, but Timm van der Gugten, Luke Wright, D’Arcy Short and Ben Cox are all expected to leave. Multiple sources suggested that Rockets will aim to sign Joe Clarke early on in the draft if he is available but he could be taken before their first pick.Oval InvinciblesThey missed out on the knockout stages by a single point last year and the feeling among players and staff was that they had underperformed given the strength of their squad. As a result, the majority have been retained and the main focus at the draft will be securing cheaper overseas players who are available for the full season. Sunil Narine could be released but would likely be bought back in the draft if he is.Will Jacks was initially expected to re-enter the draft but now looks set to be retained, while Laurie Evans – who was offered an improved deal after impressing in the Big Bash – is due to be released. Jordan Cox, a wildcard last season, has been retained after starring in the Blast for Kent while Tom Curran, Saqib Mahmood and Reece Topley are all staying put.Laurie Evans will be back in the draft•Getty Images
Northern SuperchargersJames Foster was appointed as coach only last week and has been at the PSL as Peshawar Zalmi’s head coach. As a result, general manager Andy Dawson and head of cricket Marcus North have been handling retentions over the winter and were involved in last-minute talks this week.Harry Brook, Adil Rashid, Matthew Potts and Callum Parkinson have all been retained but several others including Tom Kohler-Cadmore, Ben Raine and Matthew Fisher are likely to be available in the draft. Olly Stone, who missed last season with a stress fracture, is set to be released while Jordan Thompson, Adam Lyth and David Willey were still weighing up their options as the deadline approached.Hassan Cheema, who has joined as analyst, has built ultra-attacking batting line-ups at Islamabad United and Team Abu Dhabi and may look to replicate that formula at Superchargers. Faf du Plessis, who was ruled out of the first season due to concussion symptoms, could return as captain.Manchester OriginalsJoe Clarke is set to return to the draft and seems likely to earn a top-bracket deal with several teams interested in signing him. Phil Salt, their other explosive young top-order batter, is expected to stay put while Jos Buttler is likely to be available for the whole season, barring a Test recall.Jamie Overton and Wayne Madsen both missed last season through injury but have been retained. Matt Parkinson was surprisingly linked with a move away early in the retention window but has signed a new deal while Steven Finn and Sam Hain have both been released.Matt Parkinson is staying at Emirates Old Trafford•Getty Images
Welsh FireBen Duckett captained the side for most of last season after Jonny Bairstow’s Test recall and has been convinced to stay put, with Jake Ball, David Payne, Leus du Plooy, Ryan Higgins and Matt Critchley also set to be retained.Bairstow moves into the centrally-contracted category again, freeing up a top-bracket spot for the draft, while Tom Banton, Ian Cockbain, Luke Fletcher, Graeme White and Matt Milnes have been released. Fire are expected to start from scratch with their overseas signings and will have the second pick in the draft.London SpiritSpirit finished rock bottom in the first season and have unsurprisingly had a clear-out of their squad as a result. Eoin Morgan stays on as captain while Brad Wheal, Blake Cullen, Adam Rossington and Mason Crane are all retained but the majority of their team-mates – including Chris Wood, Luis Reece and Joe Denly – have been released.Shane Warne raised the possibility of recruiting both Mitchell Starc and Cameron Green while commentating for Fox during the Ashes but Andre Russell is likely to be their first pick of the draft if he puts his name forward.
