Sharjeel century knocks out Southern Punjab; Northern seal last-over victory

Ahmed Shehzad’s 77 off 45 balls went in vain as Central Punjab fell short in the end

Sharjeel Khan hammered a sensational 54-ball century and the Sindh bowlers defended a daunting total of 196 empathically to knock Southern Punjab out with a 45-run victory. SP continue to sit at the bottom of the table while Sindh remain on top with 10 points, ensuring a top four finish.Opting to bowl, SP removed opener Ahsan Ali in the opening over before Shan Masood (22 off 15) and Sharjeel batted carefully for next two overs. The duo, however, didn’t take much time to find their feet, smacking 19 in Naseem Shah’s second over to propel the innings. Saud Shakeel (26 off 19) shared a 56-run stand with Sharjeel, who hit 13 fours and four sixes to complete his fourth T20 hundred.Sindh were looking for a 200-plus total when they went into the final over with a solid footing at 189 for 4 but they stumbled and added only seven runs losing three wickets.SP lost Zeeshan Ashraf early before Tayyab Tahir’s 32 off 23 did some repair work, but not for too long. Azam Khan – who lost his place in the World Cup squad – failed to make an impression and edged back to Sarfaraz Ahmed for 2 off four balls. Mohammad Imran (29 off 20) and Aamer Yamin (27 off 18) tried to pull the game back but regular wickets meant SP never came close to the required run rate and were wrapped up for 151 in 18.5 overs. They are effectively are out of the semi-final race now, losing seven games out of nine, and with only one match remaining.Haider Ali cracks one away to the off side•Pakistan Cricket Board

Northern stunned Central Punjab with a sensational chase of 195, sealing a five-wicket victory, which seemed an unlikely prospect for much of the innings, with three balls to spare.Central Punjab were put in to bat, and the small crowd was treated to a feast of good hitting by Ahmed Shehzad, who rolled back the years to get his side off to a flying start. Muhammad Akhlaq at the other end kept Shehzad stellar company, and inside 12 overs, the openers had taken CP to 124.However, once Aamer Jamal cleaned up Shehzad, the batters that followed struggled to keep up the scoring rate, and Northern gradually began to get a grip on the match. Jamal removed Faheem Ashraf and Shoaib Malik early too, and an innings that at one stage looked like comfortably clearing 200 ended at 194.A 92-run second-wicket partnership between Ali Imran and Haider Ali – freshly called up for the T20 World Cup – saw Northern keep the asking rate hovering around ten runs an over, but three wickets for 23 runs saw them fall behind in the game.It looked as if CP were slowly assuming control of the game, but a stunning onslaught from Rohail Nazir and Jamal kept the game alive. In the end, the pair added 50 in 25 balls, and once Wahab Riaz was taken for 20 in the penultimate over, a couple of boundaries at the expense of Faheem in the final over sealed the win for Northern.

Chelsea now make "devastating" £96k-p/w forward their top priority for 2025

Chelsea have now made a new attacker their “top priority” in 2025 as they look to provide Enzo Maresca with the final piece of his attacking puzzle at Stamford Bridge.

Nicolas Jackson going from laughing stock to lethal

In the 2023/24 Premier League season, Nicolas Jackson scored 14 goals, but developed a reputation for missing easy chances in his debut campaign for Chelsea.

In fact, only three players underperformed their expected goals by a bigger margin, and Chelsea spent much of the summer looking for a new no.9 to at least provide competition for the Senegal international, if not start ahead of him.

This season, however, he has taken his game to another level under Maresca. His goal against Newcastle was his sixth of the season, from an expected goals of exactly six, and demonstrated that he has made the step from future star to main man in Chelsea’s attack.

He has been rewarded with a new contract, which runs until 2031, and seems likely to lead the Chelsea line for some time to come. As a result, Chelsea’s priorities have shifted somewhat, away from a traditional no.9.

Chelsea target "devastating" forward

Now, it has been claimed that Chelsea are now eyeing a more versatile option in attack, and have made Borussia Dortmund ace Karim Adeyemi their “top priority” for 2025. The German international is still a raw talent, but has shown clear glimpses of his talent, most recently by netting a hat-trick against Celtic in the Champions League, while he also scored against Chelsea on the same stage in 2023 with a superb solo effort.

He has been described as having the potential to become “a devastating outlet” by football analyst Ben Mattinson on X, and Chelsea would like to be the club to harness that potential.

Chelsea chiefs want to sign £200k-p/w flop in Jadon Sancho repeat – report

It would be their most surprising and risky move yet.

ByBen Browning Oct 28, 2024

That is according to French outlet Jeunes Footeux [via TEAMtalk], who claim that the Blues have made the German their ‘top priority’ for next summer amid reported interest from French Champions PSG too.

The 22-year-old would not come cheap, with the winger still having three years left to run on his £96,000 a week deal in Dortmund, but he would add some excellent versatility to Maresca’s attack, with Adeyemi able to play on either flank or even as a central striker alongside Jackson.

His raw pace would add yet another dimension to Chelsea’s attack, who currently only have the injury-prone Pedro Neto as a natural speedster in attack, and that could complement Jackson’s hold up skills and Palmer’s passing range excellently.

It is added that “Dortmund will look to reject any winter approaches for their player as they would rather keep him for the full campaign before selling next summer”, as they anticipate a bidding war for his services. Could Chelsea bring him to Stamford Bridge?

Arsenal scouting wonderkid who club officials think is better than Endrick

Arsenal are now scouting a starlet whose club believe he is a bigger talent than Endrick, with the Gunners keeping a close eye on his development.

Arsenal improving youth policy

Arsenal’s youth policy in recent seasons has been far from perfect, with several talents knocking on the first team door without getting a look in.

The likes of Amario Cozier-Duberry, Charlie Patino, Brooke Norton-Cuffy and Omari Hutchinson have all at various points looked set to break into Mikel Arteta’s Premier League plans but have hardly featured, with none now remaining at the club.

In their thrashing of Bolton Wanderers in the Carabao Cup, though, it was clear that a change of policy had been implemented.

Jack Porter (16), Josh Nichols (18), Lewis-Skelly (17), Ethan Nwaneri (17), Maldini Cacri (18) and Ismael Kabia (18) all featured for the Gunners, while Alexei Rojas (18) and Aiden Heaven (17) were unused substitutes.

In the time since, Lewis-Skelly has gone on to make his debut in both the Premier League and Champions League, with Mikel Arteta revealing that both he and Nwaneri are now fully-fledged members of the Gunners first team.

“They are there,” the Spaniard said. “They are in contention [to play]. They always give us the option and the possibility to start the game.

“Myles came on the other night and he did really well. Ethan the same. They are first-team players. They are with us and we treat them and value the same way as any other player.”

And Arsenal want to continue their conveyer belt of youth talent, with a move to sign another young highly rated talent now being mooted.

Arsenal scouting player believed to be better than Endrick

Now, reports from Spain claim that the Gunners are keeping a close eye on Palmeiras rising star Luighi Hanri Sousa Santos as they ponder a potential move.

The Brazilian side have enjoyed a strong supply of talent in recent years, with Estevao Willian, Luis Guilherme and Endrick all having been sold for fees in excess of £25m across the last 12 months.

Now, Marca [Via Sport Witness] claim that Luighi Santos is the next cab off the rank, with the 18-year-old having netted 10 times at U20 level but yet to get off the mark at senior level. Indeed, the report adds that some club officials believe that he is even better than Endrick.

It is claimed that Arsenal “‘tried to close him down in recent months”, with Brazilian Edu Gaspar leading the charge for his signature, but that Luighi has penned a new deal with the Brazilian side which includes a release clause worth €80m (£66.5m), a fee that it seems Arsenal are unlikely to shell out any time soon.

However, he is being advised by Arsenal invincible Gilberto Silva, which may see the Gunners handed an advantage should he become available for a reasonable fee any time in the future.

Ian Watmore stands down as ECB chairman with immediate effect

Chairman leaves role after just over a year in office, Barry O’Brien steps up as interim

George Dobell07-Oct-2021

Ian Watmore has stood down as chair of the ECB with immediate effect after just over a year in the role.Watmore, who experienced an almost equally brief period as chief executive of the FA just over a decade ago, is understood to have lost the confidence of the ECB board and the counties after a demanding couple of weeks which has seen England cancel their tour to Pakistan and a failure to agree a domestic schedule for the next couple of years. The 63-year-old, who has also recently stood down from the position of First Civil Service Commissioner, is understood to be retiring completely. Current ECB Deputy Chair, Barry O’Brien, will step up as interim Chair, but has indicated to the ECB board that he will not be a candidate for the role. Instead a process to find a successor will begin shortly.Watmore, the first chair to receive a salary for the role (£150,000 a year before expenses), could be forgiven for finding the job very different to the one he expected. His period in office, which officially started on September 1, 2020, has been defined by the battle to stage cricket in a time of Covid and has seen the ECB make relatively large-scale redundancies and suffer serious financial pressures. In a statement released by the ECB, Watmore alludes to some “wellbeing” concerns – he had a heart problem at the time he left the FA and is understood to have been wearied by the unrelenting pressure of his time at the ECB – and admits the demands of the job “taken have a personal toll” on him. It is understood that, when the issue of his future was raised, he was willing to move aside. While initially popular with the counties, who welcomed his gentle style of management after years of more robust characters such as Giles Clarke and Colin Graves, Watmore appears to have lost their confidence in recent weeks. It is understood that several counties contacted the ECB to express their concerns after a meeting of the county chairs at Lord’s last week in which he was described as somewhat confused. Several present at the meeting described it as “shambolic”. The ECB has also been stung by criticism of the decision to cancel the England tour to Pakistan which was made by the ECB board chaired by Watmore.Related

But while Watmore’s tenure at the ECB is unlikely to be remembered as especially successful, he did have an impact at the ICC. He was a key figure in Manu Sawhney’s departure as the organisation’s CEO and gave crucial impetus in the push towards cricket embracing Olympic participation. It may be relevant, however, that the ICC part of his role demanded far more time than he had originally anticipated. And, at a time when the ECB seemed to lurch from crisis to embarrassment with only brief moments of respite between, he found himself worn, jaded and exhausted. Even his critics acknowledge he was a decent, well-meaning man who inherited an incredibly tough situation. It might also raise questions about the character required for the role. Watmore, a data-led individual who didn’t relish the spot light, was initially welcomed as a breath of fresh air after the eras of Graves and Clarke. But subsequent events might suggest their unquenchable self-belief and determination are pre-requisites for the job.”It is with regret that I step down as Chair of the ECB, but I do so in mindfulness of my own wellbeing and that of the game which I love,” Watmore said in a statement. “I was appointed to the post in a pre-pandemic era, but Covid has meant the role and its demands on time are dramatically different to all our original expectations, which has taken a personal toll on me. Given this, the Board and I feel the ECB will be better served by a new Chair to take it forward post pandemic. Leaving now, at the end of the season, gives the Board time to find a new Chair to support cricket through the challenges of the 2022 season and beyond.”On a personal level, I also retired last month after five years at the Civil Service Commission and recently became a grandfather. I would now like to retire completely from work and enjoy our great game as a spectator.”

Arsenal pursue bargain move for £320k-p/w "machine" who Havertz will love

Despite a gruelling start to the Premier League season that has seen them play Manchester City, Liverpool, Aston Villa and Tottenham Hotspur in their first nine games, Arsenal are still within five points of the top spot.

Mikel Arteta’s side haven’t necessarily played the most attractive free-flowing football, but given the level of opposition, their numerous red cards and constant injuries, they have played pragmatic football that has kept them in the title race.

Moreover, there have still been several standout performers so far, with the likes of Bukayo Saka, Gabriel Magalhaes and David Raya all more than justifying their place in the team.

At the same time, last summer’s surprise signing, Kai Havertz, has kept up his impressive form in the number nine position, and based on recent reports, the club could be set to sign another attacker he’ll love playing with.

Arsenal transfer news

According to a recent report from Football Insider, Arsenal are very interested in signing Leroy Sané next year.

In fact, the report has revealed that the Gunners are working on a deal to sign the German upon the expiration of his mammoth £320k-per-week Bayern Munich contract, meaning it would be a free transfer.

The good news for the North Londoners is that, due to him playing in Germany, they will be able to open negotiations with him in January, but the bad news is that they are not the only club keen on the 28-year-old, with Newcastle United also being mentioned in the story.

It might be a complicated transfer to get over the line should other clubs start to vie for his services, but due to Sane’s incredible ability, Arsenal must fight to bring him to North London – he’d be fantastic alongside Havertz.

Why Sane would be an excellent signing for Arsenal and Havertz

Okay, so there are three key reasons why Sane would be such an excellent signing to make for Arsenal, and in particular Havertz, with the first being his style of play.

We know that Havertz is at his best for the North Londoners when he can interchange with his wingers, holding the ball up, playing them in, and either occupying a defender for them to score or getting on the end of a move himself.

In this regard, the Bayern ace would be perfect.

He isn’t the fastest winger in Europe, but there is no doubt that one of his strengths is getting on his bike and running in behind opposition defences – as he did at times against the Gunners last season – which in turn would allow the former Chelsea marksman to play more into his strengths of holding up play before getting the ball to the German’s feet, akin to the move that saw Saka score against Spurs last season.

The second reason signing the Essen-born star would be a great idea is his Premier League experience. Thanks to his impressive years with City, in which he scored 25 goals and provided 28 assists in 90 league appearances, he shouldn’t need much of an adaptation period, so he could hopefully make an instant impact for Arteta’s side.

The final reason he would be an excellent signing is similar: his incredible output across his entire career.

In his 374 senior appearances to date, he’s scored 102 goals and provided 101 assists, meaning that even when we include his breakthrough seasons at Schalke, the unreal “machine”, as dubbed by Thomas Tuchel, has averaged a goal involvement once every 1.84 games.

Moreover, the fact he’s just as effective at scoring goals as he is setting them up should make him the ideal winger to pair up with Havertz.

Ultimately, even if Arsenal had to pay a small fee to sign Sane next year, it would be a brilliant idea, so the fact they could get him for free makes this potential transfer a total no-brainer.

ICC sets up working group to review cricket in Taliban-governed Afghanistan

ICC says it wants to support the ACB in its efforts to grow cricket – for men and women – in the troubled country

ESPNcricinfo staff17-Nov-2021The ICC Board has set up a working group to observe and review cricket in Afghanistan in general and, more specifically, the Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB) after the developments following the Taliban takeover of the country. The group, to be chaired by Imran Khwaja, also includes Ross McCollum, Lawson Naidoo and Ramiz Raja and will report back to the Board over the coming months.Related

Afghanistan women's cricket in danger after Taliban takeover

“The ICC Board is committed to continuing to support Afghanistan Cricket to develop both men’s and women’s cricket moving forward,” ICC chairman Greg Barclay said in a media statement. “We believe the most effective way for this to happen will be to support our Member in its efforts to achieve this through its relationship with the new government.”Cricket is fortunate to be in the position to influence positive change in Afghanistan with the national men’s team a source of great pride and unity in a country with a young population that has experienced more upheaval and change than most. We should protect that status and continue to try to influence change through the ACB but will continue to closely monitor the situation and take any decisions accordingly.”Ramiz, the chairman of the PCB, meanwhile, has said that the ICC Board’s decision had come about partly as a reaction to evidence of factionalism in the ACB. More than one candidate is said to have contacted the ICC claiming to be chair of the ACB ahead of the meeting. They were told by the ICC to sort the matter out among themselves and though an invitation was sent out to the board CEO, he did not attend the meeting.”The more things get stable in Afghanistan, the more their representation will get stronger,” Ramiz said.Since the Taliban assumed power in Afghanistan, and the group’s stance that women would not be allowed to play sport became public, Cricket Australia has postponed a scheduled Test match against Afghanistan, at home in Hobart in November, and there has been speculation that other boards might follow suit.Geoff Allardice, the ICC interim chief executive, had told select media during the course of the T20 World Cup recently, “Afghanistan is our member, and they are going through some change at the moment. We are just trying to liaise with them, ensure that cricket is being governed and the board is governed appropriately and in accordance with their constitution.”The second is that their cricket is continuing to function. We’ve supported them and the team has performed at this event. You’ve seen their players in a number of events now. In terms of how our board will consider the situation in Afghanistan at its meeting next week, they will get a report on how things are travelling. They’re going through a lot of change within the country and in terms of the relationship of the cricket board with the new regime.”Answering a question about the future of the men’s national team in the event that there was no change in the Taliban’s position on women’s sport – or cricket specifically – Allardice had said, “Our goal is to see men and women playing cricket in Afghanistan. Our view is that the best way to achieve that is to stay closely connected with the cricket board and try to influence through the cricket board.”They’re on a steady trajectory of development there and we would like to see that continue. How other members react with their bilateral arrangements with Afghanistan is up to them. We will be working through their situation at our board level and with their board as well. “They [the ACB] have said to us that women’s cricket is continuing. They certainly haven’t given us an indication that it has stopped. Time will tell, in terms of how that plays out. Yes, we have been in regular communication with them from the time things changed in their country. We are hoping to have some meetings with their representatives around our board meetings.”There have been a few changes at the top at the ACB of late too. When 33-year-old Afghanistan allrounder Mirwais Ashraf was appointed acting chairman of the board last week, it was the second such update in four months after Azizullah Fazli had been named chairman replacing Farhan Yusufzai, who left the country after the Taliban took over.No proper reason has been given by the ACB about the latest change, but it has been learnt that Fazli’s appointment was always intended to be a temporary one.As reported by ESPNcricinfo at the time, the Afghan government has plans of revamping the working structure of the board. “The government is trying to bring in more competent people with expertise in technical aspects of the game – commercial, business and marketing,” a former director of the ACB told ESPNcricinfo. “If Afghanistan can produce world-class players with this broken system back home, then imagine what they can do with a competent board.”
