Stuart Broad takes ten to mark 500th wicket with series victory

Chris Woakes takes five as England beat the weather to complete 2-1 series win

The Report by Valkerie Baynes28-Jul-2020

Stuart Broad celebrates England’s victory after taking his tenth wicket•Getty Images

It was all about one man.Stuart Broad, in claiming his 500th Test wicket on the last day, sealed his dominance over West Indies in this third and final Test at Emirates Old Trafford and delivered England’s fight back from 0-1 down in the series to reclaim the Wisden Trophy 2-1.Broad’s ten wickets for the match, not to mention his highly anticipated step into the 500 club, overshadowed Chris Woakes’ five-wicket haul. But Woakes’ contribution was no less important, given that England had to take eight wickets on a rain-affected last day to place their hands on the trophy, which will now be retired at Lord’s.Broad’s 6 for 31 helped bowl West Indies out for 197 in response to England’s first-innings 369, to which he had contributed a valuable 62 from just 45 deliveries after a mini-collapse had left the hosts 280 for 8.Rory Burns’ 90 plus half-centuries to Joe Root and Dom Sibley in England’s second innings pushed their lead to 398 runs and Broad then claimed the wickets of opener John Campbell and nightwatchman Kemar Roach late on the third day to put his side in command before Monday’s washout. In doing so, Broad spent from the close of play on Sunday until the final morning on Tuesday on 499 Test wickets.Broad joined the 500 club – becoming the seventh man, and fourth seam bowler, in history to claim 500 Test wickets – after a brief rain interruption early in the first session when he had Kraigg Brathwaite out lbw with a ball that kept low and struck the back pad in line with off stump.Incidentally, Brathwaite was the 500th Test wicket for James Anderson, the other England player on the list, at Lord’s in 2017. Anderson now has 589 and, before play, backed Broad, who is four years his junior, to “take as many wickets as he wants”.Milestone achieved, Broad made way for Woakes to do his thing, but he returned to the attack to claim West Indies’ final wicket with his first ball back, Jermaine Blackwood caught down the leg side by Jos Buttler. Broad finished as the leading wicket-taker for the series with 16 from two Tests at an average of 10.93.ALSO READ: Stats: Broad’s career in milestones, and momentum-seizing momentsIf the scriptwriters had handed Broad a blank sheet of paper and asked him to pen the episode himself, it’s unlikely he would have changed a thing down to the timing of the rain, which had caused minimal disruption through the final day but began to fall heavily within minutes of the close.Woakes played his part beautifully as England’s “Mr Dependable” and, one suspects in light of his reputation as one of the nicest blokes in cricket, he probably didn’t begrudge Broad stealing the spotlight away from his fourth five-for in Tests.Broad even had a hand in Woakes claiming his first scalp for the innings when Shai Hope skied his attempted pull and Broad ran in from mid-on to take the catch. Hope had reached his highest score of the series with 31 but with his side needing to bat out the day for the draw to retain the trophy, they needed much more. There was still the potential for West Indies to hold on, with the likes of Shamarh Brooks, Blackwood, Roston Chase and Jason Holder in their line-up but it was going to take something special. Woakes negated the threat of Brooks, whom he had caught behind for 22.The tourists underlined how not to bat long with the run-out of Chase. Blackwood pushed Woakes towards cover point and set off for a run as Dom Bess swooped from backward point and fired the ball in brilliantly to the striker’s end, catching Chase short of his ground.Woakes then had Holder, Dowrich and Cornwall out, all lbw and all cheaply, before making way for Broad’s finale to dismiss Blackwood, whose 95 in West Indies’ first-Test victory remained their highest individual score of the series.Broad missed that Test, much to his chagrin, but he responded beautifully with a new-ball spell of 3 for 1 in 14 balls that helped set up England’s series-levelling victory in the second Test. It was the kind of spell that leaves team-mates, including Anderson, in awe but it was just the beginning. The third Test, the final installment of the Wisden Trophy – England and West Indies will contest the Richards-Botham Tropy next time they meet – was iconic in many ways. Two sides with it all to play for, behind closed doors in the first international cricket to be played since the Covid-19 lockdown. It was the first time in Test history that a side had come back to win a series from 1-0 down twice in a row following England’s triumph in South Africa earlier this year. But ultimately, it was all about one man.

Matt Critchley six-for seals deal for Derbyshire at Leicestershire

Derbyshire stay top of North Group with second win in as many matches

Legspinner Matt Critchley picked up career-best figures of 6 for 73 as Derbyshire extended their lead at the top of the North Group by completing a nine-wicket victory over Leicestershire in the Bob Willis Trophy match at the Fischer County Ground, Grace RoadCritchley had Colin Ackermann caught at first slip by a diving Wayne Madsen, Ben Mike caught at second slip by Leus du Plooy and Dieter Klein caught behind by wicketkeeper Harvey Hosein in the space of five balls as the Foxes collapsed from 104 for 2 to 140 for 8. Only a defiant last-wicket stand of 52 between Harry Swindells and Chris Wright, batting with a runner, prevented Leicestershire being beaten by an innings. The morning had seen a double wicket maiden from first-class debutant Ed Barnes raise Derbyshire’s hope of forcing a three-day win. The young Yorkshireman, on loan at Derbyshire until the end of the season, bowled nightwatchman Callum Parkinson off the inside edge as the batsman tried to leave a delivery just outside off stump, and three balls later found the edge of left-hander Ben Slater’s bat and saw Madsen hold a waist-high catch at first slip to leave Leicestershire struggling on 34 for 2.They would have been in even deeper trouble if Leus du Plooy had been able to hold a chance given by Harry Dearden soon afterwards, the batsman edging an attempted cut at a wide delivery from Dustin Melton to second slip, where du Plooy got both hands to the ball but could not hang on.Dearden played aggressively after lunch, hitting 21 runs off 14 balls and raising a 50 partnership with opener Hassan Azad, but an attempt to clear mid-on off the bowling of Critchley gave Luis Reece a simple catch. Azad followed, leg before wicket on the back foot to the occasional left-arm spin of du Plooy, and the writing was on the wall for the Foxes when George Rhodes tried to clip a full straight ball from Melton through midwicket, missed, and was palpably leg before wicket.Critchley’s three in five made the win all but certain, though Will Davis, Swindells – who finished on a career-best 41 not out – and Wright battled impressively to ensure the home side avoided the ignominy of an innings defeat. With the pitch offering increasing turn, left-arm spinner Parkinson then had Derbyshire captain Billy Godleman caught behind before Reece and Madsen saw their side over the line for their second win in as many matches.

Na época, eu estava no hotel e quis me suicidar. Me veio pensamentos ruins e eu queria saber como era me jogar do prédio.

Eu chorava, não conseguia me expressar direito.

Entretanto, o período trouxe maior consciência do jogador.

-Fiquei sozinho 12, 15 dias e nunca mais tive Síndrome do Pânico – concluiu.

Aston Villa could sign Luiz 2.0 in £60m "difference maker"

Aston Villa have not started their transfer business yet, but it is clear Unai Emery is aiming to bolster his squad significantly ahead of the 2024/25 campaign, which will feature Champions League football.

As a result, he's been looking at bringing in some potentially exciting names to Villa Park, with one out-favour star at a top-four club now linked with a move to the Midlands.

Aston Villa manager Unai Emery

Aston Villa transfer news

According to talkSPORT, Villa are showing an interest in Arsenal gem Emile Smith Rowe ahead of the summer transfer window.

They aren’t the only club interested, however, as Fulham and Serie A side Napoli are also eyeing up a swoop for the attacking midfielder.

Emile Smith Rowe playing for Arsenal

Emery may have to move a player or two on this summer in order to spend money on the likes of Smtih Rowe however, which means a deal hinges on external factors.

In October 2023, the Gunners placed a £60m valuation on the Englishman, yet with two years left on his contract, might Emery chance his luck with a lower offer than this?

The club have enjoyed plenty of success signing players from other Premier League clubs throughout the years and Smith Rowe could be the latest in a line of wonderful signings, following in the footsteps of Douglas Luiz.

What Emile Smith Rowe could bring to Aston Villa

Luiz moved to the Midlands from Manchester City in the summer of 2019 and has since made over 200 competitive appearances for the club while attracting interest from the likes of Arsenal and Barcelona, placing a staggering £85m price tag on his head.

He has gone from strength to strength, particularly last season when the Brazilian scored ten and assisted ten in all competitions.

Douglas Luiz scores for Aston Villa

It clearly shows that recruiting players who don’t appear to have much of a future at bigger Premier League clubs is the way forward and Smith Rowe could perhaps be the next Luiz for Emery this summer.

Since making his debut during the 2018/19 season, the 23-year-old has gone on to make 115 appearances for the Gunners, yet recent years have seen his progress stall.

Arsenal midfielder Emile Smith-Rowe.

After ten goals and two assists during the 2021/22 league campaign, Smith Rowe missed 21 matches during the following campaign due to groin surgery and this has stalled his progress.

Indeed, the youngster has played only 33 times since the start of the 2022/23 season, slipping down the pecking order due to the form of others in the squad.

Perhaps a fresh start could reignite his career? At Villa, he could slot into the starting XI fairly easily. Hailed as a “difference maker” by former Arsenal cult hero Mesut Özil, it is clear the Englishman has the talent, but he now needs a place in which to display it on a regular basis.

Despite making only 13 league appearances during 2023/24, the attacking midfielder succeeded with 50% of his dribble attempts, while also making 0.3 key passes, grabbing one assist and averaging 1.2 shots per game. Of course, these may not be the finest statistics in the world, but considering he averaged just 28 minutes per match, his dribbling and shots per match certainly aren't too bad.

Emery gave him his debut at the Emirates six years ago, so he knows exactly how Smith Rowe works, notably praising him after one performance in Europe.

"He is taking confidence, he is taking responsibility and also I think his performance in 90 minutes is very good," stated the Spaniard. "He is a good example for the other young players. We think they can help us but they need the confidence of playing matches, not only working with us in the training sessions."

This prior relationship could perhaps give Villa a major advantage in their chase for the 23-year-old, that’s for sure.

Latest Everton transfer news: Toffees trio wanted; Dyche eyeing bargains

Football FanCast brings you the latest Everton transfer round-up.

Despite securing their Premier League survival with time to spare last season, the Toffees have been hamstrung financially due to PSR concerns. But with a new stadium on the horizon, it is imperative their final season at Goodison Park is another that sees them retain their top-flight status.

Here are the latest transfer rumours involving Everton, along with a list of the players linked with them since the end of the season.

Financial Fair Play: What is PSR, how does it work and who's in trouble?

Leicester City have become the latest club charged with an alleged PSR breach, but what could happen next?

ByStephan Georgiou Apr 16, 2024 Latest Everton transfer rumours Transfers in

Max Lowe: With Sheffield United set to allow Max Lowe to leave on a free this summer, Everton could be one of the clubs looking to swoop for the versatile full-back, who can also play in defensive midfield. Unfortunately, Everton have some competition for his signature, so may have to persuade Lowe to join the Toffees.

Bobby De Cordova-Reid: Reports have claimed that Everton could make a move for Fulham's Bobby De Cordova-Reid after contract talks in west London stalled. This is another potential free transfer for Sean Dyche, but once again, they will not be alone in their interest in the forward.

Jake O'Brien: Having starred for Lyon in Ligue 1 last term, Jake O'Brien has apparently gained some admirers from the blue half of Merseyside, with Everton seeking a bargain deal to bolster their defence. Everton are said to be monitoring the player ahead of a potential bid in the coming months.

Jack Harrison: Reports suggest that Everton have made the signing of Harrison a priority this summer. It is thought that a second loan deal from Leeds United could be possible given the Whites' failure to secure promotion last season.

Armando Broja: Everton are in a congested race for Armando Broja this summer, according to reports. One potential hurdle could be his reported price tag, with Chelsea thought to be open to a sale for £20m.

Transfers out

Amadou Onana: Everton could be forced into an early sale this summer, with reports claiming Amadou Onana could be sold for £50m before the end of the month in order to comply with PSR regulations. Several clubs are thought to be interested in the Belgian, so the Toffees shouldn't be short of offers this summer.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin: Everton are braced for offers for Dominic Calvert-Lewin this summer, thought reports in the past week have suggested they have made moves to extend his stay at Goodison Park. Newcastle United have been among those to show their interest in the striker, but it appears the club have opened talks over a new deal.

Jarrad Branthwaite: Defender Jarrad Branthwaite is looking like one of the more in-demand players this summer, and Premier League duo Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester United have been credited with an interest. However, it appears a concrete approach has yet to surface.
