BH CHAMA A RESPONSABILIDADE

MUNIZ AMPLIA A VANTAGEM

'We went out to contain in the second session' – Naseem Shah

The teenager explains what Pakistan did differently post-lunch in Rawalpindi to change the game

Umar Farooq in Rawalpindi11-Dec-2019

After conceding 89 runs in the first, wicketless session in Rawalpindi, Pakistan remarkably got back in the game in the second. They had bowled 48 balls on a full length in 26 overs in that opening session, conceding 47 runs off these deliveries and straying on leg stump as well. Wayward in line, ineffective in length, captain Azhar Ali’s statements the previous day on the important of discipline in Test format seemed lost on this attack. Speaking after the day’s play, 16-year-old Naseem Shah admitted that new plans had to be drawn up for the second session, and those centred around containing the Sri Lanka batsmen. It was the first time in 24 years that Pakistan were playing at home with an all-pace attack. The last time this happened was in 1995, against Sri Lanka in Sialkot. The hint of grass on the Rawalpindi pitch in combination with the earlier overcast conditions seemed to suggest it was the way to go but, at the toss, Sri Lanka opted to bat, baffling many. A lack of swing duly followed, and Pakistan conceded 3.4 runs to the over in that first session. In all, 120 balls were pitched on a length or fuller to concede 74 runs. When asked if his side misread the pitch, Shah said: “It’s cricket and it happens… yes there was moisture in the pitch but we couldn’t get wickets early. They also batted well and we didn’t bowl according to the plan in the first session.”So we had to re-plan and went out to contain in the second session. Overall the pitch was good, all you have to hit the good areas for success. We could have taken another wicket [in the day] but we will come back fresh tomorrow to get them as quickly as we can to restrict them under 250 to have a full control [of the game].”Shah finished the day with two wickets, as Sri Lanka slipped from 96 for 0 to 189 for 5. At stumps they were 202 for 5, and Shah, playing his second Test after a testing debut in Australia, was facing a crowed press conference for the first time. He came across as confident in answering whatever question was thrown at him. When asked about being rested in the second Test in Australia despite holding his own in the first, he kept it brief: “There wasn’t any issue. Our management understands better how they want to take care of me, so nothing to worry about.”Of course, the Rawalpindi Test is a homecoming for Test cricket in Pakistan, and Shah was happy to soak up the atmosphere. “In Australia I saw how the crowd there was behind their bowlers all the time and their support really gave them a push,” he said. “And today, playing at a home venue in front of my own crowd gave me the exact sense I got in Australia. The crowd was outstanding and they were cheering on every good ball I bowled, so playing at home wasn’t about me being under pressure but instead I was enjoying the atmosphere.”

Panna, who has taken 31 wickets in 37 T20Is, is a seam bowler. The rest of the squad bears a familiar look. Emery could ease Luiz blow by unleashing Aston Villa’s "top class" starlet

Aston Villa may not have played particularly well against Lille in midweek, but they secured progress into the semifinals of the Europa Conference League courtesy of a penalty shootout win.

They return to Premier League duty this weekend, facing a tough clash against Bournemouth as they look to keep up momentum in the chase for a fourth-placed finish.

Unai Emery will be without the services of Douglas Luiz however, as the Brazilian is set to serve the second match of his two-game suspension, meaning the manager will have to rejig his midfield.

Douglas Luiz’s Statistics this season

The former Manchester City gem has arguably been one of Villa’s standout performers this season, registering 20 goal contributions – ten goals and ten assists – across 47 appearances in all competitions, offering a dangerous threat going forward.

From a defensive viewpoint, Luiz has won 4.5 total duels per game, along with making 1.8 tackles and recovering 5.5 balls per game in the top flight.

His presence will of course be missed, but Villa did cope fairly well without him against Arsenal. Emery deployed John McGinn and Youri Tielemans at the base of the midfield in a 4-2-3-1 formation.

Having gone the full 120 minutes in midweek against Lille, perhaps some rotation will be required, especially in the centre of the park

This could see a change or two and the Spaniard may call upon the services of a young talent who has shown plenty of potential recently…

Why Tim Iroegbunam should start against Bournemouth

The 20-year-old has played 11 times for the senior side this season as he looks to emerge as a regular member of Emery’s first-team squad.

Former QPR loanee Tim Iroegbunam.

Across his seven appearances in the Premier League, Iroegbunam has completed 90% of his passes, succeeded with 60% of his dribble attempts and won 1.9 total duels per game – a success rate of 50% – which proves he has the required attributes to be a success in the top flight for Villa.

During a loan spell at QPR last season, the youngster played 32 times in the second tier, gaining significant first-team action, which has clearly worked in his favour this term.

His manager during his spell in the Championship, Gareth Ainsworth, praised the loanee for his performances, saying: "He is a player to keep your eye on. There are certain things that, I believe, if he can add them to his game he will be a top-class player – he glides past people and can finish with both feet."

There is no doubt he has a tremendous future ahead, but it already looks as though Emery is gradually weaning him into senior action at Villa.

A start against Bournemouth could give him the opportunity to showcase his talents yet again, proving to the former Arsenal boss that he could be a key member of the side during the final few weeks of the campaign.

All that matters on Sunday is a win and securing three points.

Leeds must rue selling “outstanding” star who won the Premier League

Leeds United will be fearing its not their season anymore to win promotion straight back up to the Premier League after a car-crash display against Queens Park Rangers last time out has now shattered all confidence in West Yorkshire.

The Whites were humiliated by Marti Cifuentes' Hoops instead of making it back-to-back wins in the Championship, the R's resoundingly beating Leeds 4-0 at Loftus Road as Daniel Farke's men trudged off the field in dire spirits at the end after being trounced.

Illan Meslier was the main Leeds player to be criticised in the scathing aftermath of this humbling loss on the road, the leaky Leeds goalkeeper conceding four in West London after shipping three the game prior away at Middlesbrough.

Illan Meslier

Leeds' woes between the sticks must leave them full of regret about how they treated one former shot-stopper, who was offloaded to Leicester City in 2011 for just £1.25m and ultimately ended up never looking back.

Kasper Schmeichel's time at Leeds

The Danish 'keeper is known today as being a reliable pair of gloves, most commonly associated with the Foxes who he appeared for a staggering 479 times before parting ways in 2022 for OGC Nice to break a more than decade-long connection.

But, back in 2011, Kasper Schmeichel was spoken of in the shadow of his father who was a legend at Manchester United during his playing days and wanting to cut his teeth wherever he could at a senior level.

The Whites would take a punt on Schmeichel after a promising spell in League Two with Notts County, gaining his services on a free transfer after making 49 appearances in total for the Magpies and keeping 25 clean sheets from those contests.

Schmeichel would instantly come in and become the Leeds first-choice 'keeper with 40 appearances during his one-and-only season in Yorkshire, playing for the arch-rivals of the Red Devils in the process which might not have gone down so well in his family household.

It wouldn't be all smooth sailing for the inexperienced shot-stopper, however, who would only keep ten clean sheets all season long with six shipped in just one notable 6-4 defeat to Preston North End in league action.

Yet, Leeds should have exercised more patience when it comes to the 6 foot 2 Dane if they had hindsight on their side, knowing how much Schmeichel would come on leaps and bounds at his next employers in Leicester City after waving the turbulence of Elland Road goodbye.

Unaware of his move to the King Power Stadium right up until the last minute, with the Foxes not completing a move until deadline day on the eve of the next campaign, there must have been an element of Schmeichel lining up in his new colours right after the move was finished that was determined to prove any naysayers at Leeds wrong.

He would very much do that, even going on to lift the Premier League title at Leicester remarkably all whilst remaining their number one option in between the sticks for a lengthy 11-year span.

Kasper Schmeichel's time at Leicester

It wouldn't be an exaggeration in the slightest to say that the Scandinavian 'keeper is very much a solid part of the Leicester hall-of-fame now, having been with the Foxes all the way from their lacklustre Championship days up to the heady heights of their unbelievable top-flight title glory under Claudio Ranieri.

Schmeichel, from this 400 plus games at the King Power, would help himself to an impressive 147 clean sheets with a healthy portion of those coming during the season Leicester pulled off the unthinkable and were crowned Premier League champions.

The Danish shot-stopper would keep 15 clean sheets that term in league action, an everpresent and vital figure of Ranieri's historic side.

Even as his career began to wind down at the King Power, Schmeichel's importance to the Foxes cause never dwindled with seven clean sheets picked up from 37 games during his final campaign.

OGC Nice'sKasperSchmeichel

In 2021 – just a year before his bittersweet Foxes exit – Schmeichel's estimated transfer value would stand at a hefty £12.3m according to Football Transfers with his powers not diminishing even as he became more and more of a seasoned head in the Leicester dressing room.

That amount is a far greater total than Leeds sold him on for all the way back in 2011, with Schmeichel's career exploding in the men's game after leaving the chaos of West Yorkshire firmly behind him.

Yet, despite being described as being an "outstanding" goalkeeper by ex-Leicester boss Brendan Rodgers when he was in the Foxes dug-out still, Leicester would only get £1m for the then 35-year-old to end his time with the former FA Cup winners on a downer.

Leeds would love nothing more than to turn back time and give the Dane a second shot at success at Elland Road now, especially when you consider their woes between the sticks currently.

Leeds' goalkeeper woes

Meslier will be lucky to stay as Farke's main choice in net for Leeds' final game of the regular second-tier season against Southampton, after his horror-show display at Loftus Road could cost his side dear in the race for automatic promotion.

Yet, unlike Schmeichel who they let go of for way too cheap, Leeds could still manage to get a pretty penny out of a potential suitor eyeing up the leaky Frenchman.

Leeds United'sIllanMeslier

Meslier's transfer value comes in as being the highest in the Leeds squad currently according to Football Transfers, boasting a £20.4m worth despite seeing his form fall off a cliff for Farke's anxiety-ridden Whites as of late.

If Leeds do decide to cash in down the line, they'll hope they can strike gold on a fresh up-and-coming face to take over from the ex-Lorient man and even stumble across their next Schmeichel who would end up staying put.

Liton Das, bowlers help Bangladesh clinch series

Al-Amin Hossain and Mustafizur Rahman share four wickets to restrict Zimbabwe despite Brendan Taylor’s unbeaten 59

The Report by Liam Brickhill11-Mar-2020

Liton Das cuts one•BCB

Bangladesh sprinted to a 2-0 series victory in the second T20I at the Shere Bangla National Stadium in Dhaka. Once again, Liton Das shone with the bat, registering an unbeaten 60 off 45 balls to guide his team to a nine-wicket over Zimbabwe. While Brendan Taylor had also scored 59 not out off 48 balls, there was little else of substance from the visiting batsmen and they had no answer to Bangladesh’s sustained pressure in the field, crawling to a sub-par 119 for 7.With Tamim Iqbal rested today, Das had a new opening partner in Mohammad Naim, but the result was much the same. Bangladesh cruised to 77 before they lost a wicket, and by then the result was a formality. With one foot on the plane, Zimbabwe went through the motions and whatever intensity there was earlier in the match fizzled out long before Soumya Sarkar pulled Chris Mpofu over midwicket for the second six of his innings to level the scores and then dabbed him down to short third man to end their misery.Mahmud’s first outingHasan Mahmud turned heads with his pace in the last edition of the Bangladesh Premier League, picking up ten wickets for Dhaka Platoon with a best of 4 for 32. Having been touted for big things by various scouts and coaches, Mahmud was included in the T20I squad for this series and made the playing XI ahead of Shafiul Islam today as Bangladesh looked to blood some youngsters. As Mahmudullah rang the changes in his attack from the outset, Mahmud was into the fray in the fourth over of the innings and soon showed why there have been whispers of big things to come from him.His very first ball hooped across the left-hander Craig Ervine to beat his outside edge, his fourth seamed waspishly off a length to repeat the dose, and his fifth was clocked at over 140kph. With his sixth he should have had Taylor caught at short fine leg. Looking to upset the youngster’s rhythm, Taylor shuffled across his stumps and aimed a scoop shot over short fine leg but got more height than distance. Al-Amin Hossain hustled backwards but couldn’t quite get into position to cling on to the chance. Nevertheless, an impression had been made by Mahmud, and the entire bowling attack followed suit. The wickets were shared around, as were 50 dot balls in the innings, with Al-Amin getting through his quota of four overs at under a run a ball and the offspinners Afif Hossain and Mahedi Hasan taking a combined 2 for 16 from four overs. Bangladesh conceded just one extra throughout the innings, a leg-bye, and never made things easy for Zimbabwe.Taylor scores an unbeaten half-centuryTo say that Taylor hasn’t had the best tour would be a bit of an understatement: he managed just 27 runs across two innings in the one-off Test as his attempts to take the attack to Bangladesh backfired. In the ODIs, meanwhile, he got starts and alright but repeatedly found ways to get out. And while he was out for 1 in the first T20I, he was the glue that held a somewhat flimsy effort from Zimbabwe’s batsmen together tonight.Opening the innings, Taylor laid a platform with a 57-run second-wicket stand with Craig Ervine but Bangladesh’s doggedness with the ball meant it was a lot of hard graft. Unfortunately, Taylor had little support from the other end. Ervine provided some stickability, if not rapid scoring, but the rest of Zimbabwe’s top order made virtually no impact. Taylor reached a sixth T20I fifty from 42 balls in the 19th over, and hit the only six of the innings but Zimbabwe’s total never looked like challenging Bangladesh.Zimbabwe pay the price for indisciplineWhile tight lines and canny change-ups were the hallmarks of Bangladesh’s effort in the field, the same was not true of Zimbabwe’s attack. They feed Das on his pads, and Naim outside off, as the openers cruised to 44 in the powerplay. Had Naim not holed out, somewhat against the run of play, Bangladesh could have broken yet another partnership record tonight. While there was the odd good delivery bowled, consistency was lacking and so was control: Zimbabwe bowled four wides in the innings, as well as giving away a bye and two leg-byes.Das does it againEverything Das has touched on this tour has turned to gold. So, there was a sense of inevitability to proceedings this evening, with Zimbabwe’s bowlers seemingly having learned nothing in their battles with him over the past few weeks. Not that they had much say in the matter. Das displayed a remarkable serenity, even as he ticked along at well over a run a ball. Good deliveries were kept out, or nudged for singles, and bad ones unerringly slotted to the boundary. He registered a 35-ball fifty without a hint of violence in his strokeplay, killing Zimbabwe softly, and was named both Player of the Match and of the Series for his efforts.
