Australia back in control of their destiny, sort of

The Gabba result provided a lot for Australia to be pleased about and they would like to play India there next season

Daniel Brettig in Brisbane24-Nov-2019An innings victory that delivered Australia the makings of a settled top six, underlined the quality of the bowling attack that retained the Ashes, and hoisted the hosts into second place on the ICC’s World Test Championship table was more or less all that Tim Paine’s men might have asked for at the start of their week at the Gabba. That Joe Burns, David Warner and Marnus Labuschagne all provided plenty of reassurance with the bat was perhaps the highlight of all this, married with the fact that for the first time in an awful long while, Steven Smith was permitted to play a relatively minor role in an Australian Test match victory.ALSO READ: Pakistan pay price for playing catch-upAfter a year of trials and reintegrations, these were heartening signs for Paine, the coach Justin Langer and company, even if Pakistan recovered from their ruinous first-day collapse by improving with each day of the match, so much so that they came within five runs of making Australia bat again. They will seek greater improvement in Adelaide, perhaps aided by a recall for Mohammad Abbas, as Paine’s team ponders how much it has improved the things it can control, while also thinking a little about what it cannot.”I think we’ve known Burnsy is a quality opening batter for a long time,” Paine said. “It’s great to have him back in the side, I think he’s got a great combination happening with Davey [Warner]. And I think Marnus was given some opportunities 18 months ago when some people probably thought he shouldn’t have [got them]. But obviously selectors saw the talent he had and he’s taken the experience he learnt to England, got even better, came home to Australia and looks like he’s got better again. We’re really happy with the top three in this game.”One innings doesn’t make a summer but we’re really happy with the positive signs we saw. Every time you pick [a side] you want to be able to stick. It’s been hard to have stability because we haven’t been performing as well as we would have liked. England is a tough place to bat so there is always going to be a little bit of up and down with your results over there as a batting group. But I think we’ve nutted out a pretty good group at the moment, a group that can still get a lot better.””I thought our bowlers in this game were terrific. We’ll get to Adelaide, have a look at the conditions, we’ve got the pink ball as well, so that’ll come into consideration, but I thought the four that played in this game bowled really, really well.”Paine was in little doubt that the hosts had been given one major advantage even before the match began, when Pakistan chose not to choose Abbas. Regardless of how well he may have been bowling in the present moment, Abbas would have walked onto the field with a major psychological hold on several of Australia’s batsmen.”I was pretty happy he didn’t play if I’m totally honest,” Paine said. “I thought in the UAE on wickets that offered him absolutely nothing he somehow made it move. I think he probably would have been a handful out there. Having said that I think they said he might have been under an injury cloud or he hasn’t been bowling at his absolute best. We’ll wait and see, I’m sure he’ll be looked at pretty quickly for the next Test match.”Australia Dominate at the Gabba•ESPNcricinfo Ltd

So while Pakistan had made life easier for Australia, there are other external factors that are not quite so rosy. The concept of the World Test Championship and its various vagaries was underlined by how Australia gained 60 points for a single victory in Brisbane as opposed to 56 combined for the two wins scrapped and scraped for to retain the Ashes in England.Although Australia are now second on the table, they are dealing in a system of swings and roundabouts that also features non-championship matches, whether England’s in New Zealand right now or a one-off Test against Afghanistan at the start of next summer.”The main thing is that now every Test match counts, unless it’s England and New Zealand,” Paine quipped. “There’s a few things, it’s not perfect but I think the players are rapt there’s a Test World Cup that’s up for grabs. I think over the years the points system will improve. We’re certainly tracking it, because one of our goals is to be there, [the final] is certainly a date on the calendar we’ve put down as a group.”That goal may face another obstacle in terms of the myriad of factors going into next summer’s home Test schedule. Paine reiterated his personal preference to stage a similar smash-and-grab performance against India this time next year, although he wryly suggested that might also depend on Virat Kohli’s preferences. There will also be the issues of Afghanistan’s match, and jostling between Cricket Australia, state governments, broadcasters and venues for the best spread of facilities.Brisbane’s relative indifference to Test cricket and the Gabba’s various drawbacks in terms of amenities will also play a part. This match was watched by 45,891 people over four days, a long way short of the 66,325 who watched the first three days of a day-night match between Australia and Pakistan here in 2016. Yet it was also a marginally better crowd than that who assembled to see Adam Gilchrist debut and Australia win by 10 wickets 20 years ago.”We’ll certainly try [to start at the Gabba] but we’ll have to run that by Virat. I’m sure we’ll get an answer from him at some stage I’m sure,” Paine said. “That’s where we like to start our summer and has been for a long, long time except for last summer. As I said we’ll ask Virat, see if we can get his permission to play here. Maybe even get a pink ball Test, if he’s in a good mood.”We like playing here. Australian teams have bowled and batted well here for a long time. We’d like to start here against anyone. Having said that it doesn’t win us games of cricket. The reason we win games of cricket at the Gabba is because we outplay our opposition.”So as well as Australia might have played in Brisbane, with all the fresh sustenance offered by the likes of Burns and Labuschagne to complement a renewed Warner alongside the dependable Josh Hazlewood, Pat Cummins, Mitchell Starc and Nathan Lyon, this was not a week without storm clouds looming on the horizon. Whether they rain on a burgeoning Australian parade will be a matter as much of good fortune as good management.

No Raphinha or Phillips: Building Leeds United’s perfect footballer

Leeds United fans have been blessed with some fantastic players in recent years, from the hay-day of Marcelo Bielsa to the present day where Daniel Farke has managed to construct a Championship juggernaut that's hurtling full steam ahead to potential promotion.

It's been a drastic turnaround of fortunes for the Whites who felt beleaguered in the immediate aftermath of relegation, with the re-energised group at Elland Road currently sitting at the top of the second-tier summit.

Yet, that doesn't mean Leeds supporters don't fondly look back to other successful sides when their minds wander – remembering the heroic exploits of icons from years gone by that are very much immortalised in the history books in West Yorkshire.

Having a look back at some of the best that have graced the Elland Road turf across the 21st century, here is what a perfect Leeds footballer could look like…

1 Brain – Pablo Hernandez

Former Leeds winger Pablo Hernandez.

Leeds have been blessed with some outrageously talented footballers in recent years, the sort of maverick who can conjure up a moment of magic in an instant through their sheer class alone.

Pablo Hernandez certainly fits into that mould, with the Spanish midfielder the brain of this ideal footballer as a result.

Hernandez's standout campaign would come during the 2018/19 season, where the slick 5 foot 8 wizard would muster up 24 goals and assists across 39 Championship games.

Leeds would unfortunately go on to crash out in the playoffs at the semi-final stage to Derby County, but Hernandez would later go on to achieve promotion glory anyway.

For his immense ability to just cut open teams at will with clever and intricate passes, alongside never looking nervy donning a Leeds strip when his team needed him to be at the races, Hernandez is still fondly talked about in Leeds quarters to this day.

2 Head – Pontus Jansson

Former Leeds defender Pontus Jansson.

Pontus Jansson might well be more of a forgotten name to those in West Yorkshire now however compared to Hernandez, with the Swedish defender walking out of Leeds on bad terms in 2019 and now finding himself on the books at Malmö FF.

Still, it can't be denied that Jansson used his towering frame to his advantage during his time with the Whites.

The Scandinavian defender was an absolute brute in the Championship under Bielsa, winning 6.3 duels per game on average during his debut season on English soil.

The ex-Brentford man would also score nine goals across 120 Leeds appearances, with a fair few of those coming directly off Jansson's head when rising highest.

3 Vision – Georginio Rutter

Georginio Rutter

The first player on the list that is currently in Farke's electric squad, Georginio Rutter's remarkable redemption arc at Elland Road shows no signs of stopping after initially looking like a £35.5m flop.

It's Rutter's unbelievable displays going forward that have allowed Leeds to overwhelm the fair majority of Championship sides they've tussled with, with the 21-year-old attacker – who failed to score in the second half of last season – onto 18 assists now for this campaign from 40 overall appearances.

Rutter setting up chances for his teammates on a plate means his vision would be very useful for this perfect theoretical footballer, with the standout Whites man also able to turn defences inside out with a sublime set of tricks and flicks in his back pocket alongside being an assist king.

4 Strength – Lucas Radebe

Leeds fans, even if they have moved on to loving the current fortunes of their side, must still feel somewhat sad about how Kalvin Phillips' career has taken a nosedive since he exited Elland Road for Manchester City.

At the peak of his powers donning Leeds white, the homegrown Whites product was an "aggressive" and forceful presence from holding midfield that was hard to bully off the ball, as praised by former England boss Fabio Capello.

Yet, even though Phillips was a steely player for the Whites, the strength of this ideal footballer has to come from Whites icon Lucas Radebe.

Renowned for his "aerial power" according to football journalist Ryan Baldi, Radebe would go on to accumulate 255 appearances for Leeds as a dependable and imposing presence at the back.

Leeds' adoration for their former South African great is seen in the mural dedicated to him that is present in the West Yorkshire city today, alongside Phillips also having one.

5 Hands – Paul Robinson

Ilian Meslier could go on to be remembered as a Whites great in-between the sticks, but Paul Robinson in his prime gets the nod over the current Leeds number one goalkeeper here.

Robinson would go on to have a well-established Premier League career off the back of his promising beginnings at Elland Road, with the ex-Tottenham Hotspur shot-stopper playing 118 games in total for the Whites which even included him scoring against Swindon Town in 2003.

The 41-time England international would pick up ten clean sheets during his peak in the 2002/03 season, before never looking back with a major move to North London in 2004.

6 Legs – Daniel James

Leeds forward Dan James.

Daniel James, unlike his teammate in between the sticks, does make the cut here with his electric burst of "raw pace" – as hailed by former Wales boss Ryan Giggs.

The ex-Manchester United man has terrorised second-tier defences all season long with his darting runs forward, but his main improvement as a footballer under Farke has come in the fact that the end product is also there to not make the ascent forward go to waste.

The Welshman is onto 12 goals and seven assists in the Championship now, and with the Leeds number 20 still only 26 years of age, he should still have the legs to be a nuisance for defences to try and contain for many years to come.

7 Right foot – Mark Viduka

Another blast from the past in this selection of Leeds greats, alongside Robinson as a safe of pair gloves, Mark Viduka's title of still being Leeds' all-time top scorer in the Premier League to this date dictates that his deadly right foot is mentioned.

Bagging 71 goals across four impactful seasons playing for Leeds, the Australian centre-forward was a key player the Whites relied on to get them out of any mess they faced with a crucial strike.

8 Left foot – Ian Harte

While in more recent times supporters have witnessed the genius of Raphinha, Ian Harte was widely known throughout his career for having an unbelievable left foot when stepping up to take free-kicks, even whilst playing in defence.

When peering at his goalscoring statistics at Leeds and elsewhere, you would be mistaken for thinking you were scanning the numbers of a prolific striker.

Harte would find the back of the net an unbelievable 84 times for the various different clubs he lined up for, with 38 of those coming during the late nineties and early 2000s when wearing a Leeds strip.

A man with the cliched 'wand of a left boot'…

'My will to win is very, very strong' – Kieron Pollard

The international captain talks about passing on his experience to the youngsters and the potential comeback of Dwayne Bravo

West Indies white-ball captain Kieron Pollard says it is his will to win that helps drive his franchise cricket career which continues to be littered with success. The 32-year-old allrounder stands on the brink of Abu Dhabi T10 glory after his team Deccan Gladiators made it to Sunday’s final. Pollard is also a multiple IPL champion, has a T20 World Cup winner’s medal on his mantlepiece, is one of the most experienced T20 players in the world. He has taken in franchise tournaments the world over, from his native Caribbean islands to England, Australia, Bangladesh, the UAE and Canada. For Pollard, each stop has been a learning experience and he hopes to feed his gained knowledge back into both West Indian cricket and across the ever-expanding footprint of T20 leagues across the globe.”I think the will to win is what makes you as an individual sometimes successful because you want to pass on the knowledge that you’ve learnt [from] playing international cricket [and] playing franchise cricket on to the players that you have presently and try to educate them. So when you go onto that field, they have that cricketing knowledge to go out and try to execute and be one step ahead of the opposition,” Pollard told ESPNcricinfo.”We play a lot of cricket around the world but it’s about being successful and about winning and that’s my mantra no matter who I play for at that point in time I give my all to win and my will to win is very, very strong.”Pollard proved as much on his latest assignment in the T10, where he helped the Gladiators set up a showdown with the Maratha Arabians for the trophy courtesy of back-to-back victories over the Bangla Tigers and the Qalandars on Saturday night. And for the likes of 22-year-olds Dan Lawrence and Mason Crane, as well as 24-year-old Migael Pretorious in an otherwise experienced-looking Gladiators outfit, Pollard is a great resource to tap into.”With that you can broaden their mindset as to how they go about it because in certain cultures, certain things are embedded in them but when you come out in the wider world it’s not only about that,” Pollard said of his advice for emerging players.”You get a different perspective from different people and that makes you learn and get better as a cricketer. I’ve played all over the world, in different competitions, so I have a fair idea of how to go about it and I’ve been successful as well. So however that conversation goes at that time you share that knowledge of it and what you think. Your opinion might not be right but it might give them a different perspective of how you are thinking about certain aspects.”Once you’re good enough to be here, you’re good enough to go out and perform. All you need to do when you sit in a franchise or in a team where there’s a lot of internationals you try to pick their brains and try to understand different aspects of cricket, different scenarios of what they would have done in certain situations.”Pollard came into the T10 on the back of his first assignment since being named captain of West Indies’ T20I and ODI formats, a tour against Afghanistan that ended in a 2-1 defeat in the former and 3-0 whitewash in the latter. They were his first ODI matches in over three years and now that Pollard is back in the fold, he will do everything in his power, he says, to ensure that when he eventually leaves the international scene, he does so having given back to Caribbean cricket.”The same experiences I’ve learned around the world, the same experiences I can share in the dressing room,” Pollard said.”In our dressing room there are a lot of young guys and they need the experienced guys to try and guide them along and that’s basically my job in terms of trying to guide them, try to set them in the right direction and also trying to lead from the front in terms of performing as well.”I’m pretty excited because I know what the guys can learn from the experienced guys. We have Dwayne Bravo who can come back in potentially, you have Chris Gayle who is still playing T20 cricket around the world and has a wealth of knowledge and experience in the T20 arena, in 50-over, in Test cricket, so he can share a lot.”As a staff and management, we look forward to that, trying to build for something in the future. Obviously, we’re not going to be around for too long but whatever I can do in the little space of time to help is going to make me a lot more satisfied than leaving the international side and not being able to help.”

West Brom struck gold with an icon who’d be worth £12m in 2024 money

West Bromwich Albion go into this coming Good Friday's Championship clash brimming with confidence, having seen off Bristol City and Huddersfield Town with relative ease 2-0 and 4-1 before the international break kicked in.

Carlos Corberan's men look secure in their playoff spot in the division subsequently, sitting pretty in fifth spot with a sizeable eight-point gap opening up between the Baggies and their nearest playoff rival in Hull City in seventh, as a result of West Brom's recent positive form.

Alex Palmer has been a key cog in the Baggies machine this season in between the sticks to help his team dream big about promotion aspirations, keeping 16 clean sheets with the last of those coming in the rather routine Robins victory.

Yet, there's a hero from West Brom yesteryear who's idolised even more than Palmer when recollecting about dependable goalkeepers, having cost the West Midlands outfit just £4.5m back in 2012.

West Brom goalkeeper Alex Palmer.

Ben Foster's transfer to West Brom

Ben Foster would leave Manchester United behind for pastures new initially at Birmingham City, never looking back after walking out of Sir Alex Ferguson's Theatre of Dreams.

It's not as if the revered manager didn't utilise Foster during his Red Devils days, amassing 23 appearances for the Man United first team over two seasons before moving on for more regular minutes first with the Blues and then further down the line with the Baggies.

Wrexham'sBenFoster

After one season at St. Andrew's, Foster would pack his bags for nearby West Brom with the ex-Man United shot-stopper going down as an icon over time in his new surroundings.

That £4.5m fee forked out by the current Championship club – after his short stint at the Blues – would end up looking like an absolute bargain, with Foster becoming a celebrated servant for the Baggies who was a reliable goalkeeper over many years when the club were a solid Premier League side.

What Ben Foster would be worth in 2024 money

The 6 foot 4 goalkeeper would go on to make 223 appearances for West Brom over seven impactful seasons, becoming very much a part of the furniture at the West Midlands club by the time of his exit.

West Brom lineup for Ben Foster's Premier League debut

West Brom 0-2 Man United, August 2011

1. GK – Ben Foster

2. RB – Steven Reid

3. CB – Gabriel Tamas

4. CB – Jonas Olsson

5. LB – Nicky Shorey

6. RM – Chris Brunt

7. CM – Youssouf Mulumbu

8. CM – Paul Scharner

9. LM – James Morrison

10. ST – Somen Tchoyi

11. ST – Shane Long

Sourced by Transfermarkt

Foster would end up keeping 57 clean sheets for the Baggies over these games, with his best personal season coming during the 2014-15 campaign where he would register 12 shut-outs from just 28 contests played.

That season would coincide with West Brom finishing 13th in the division with the likes of one-time hotshot Saido Berahino firing in 20 goals, Foster's team never really anxious about their top-flight status and sinking down to where Corberan now manages his Baggies troops in the second tier.

Foster would eventually endear himself to a new set of supporters in Watford, where he managed to break into the 200 game threshold also in Hertfordshire before a notable move to moneybags Wrexham AFC came to fruition, but West Brom fans will still view the eight-time England international as a Baggies icon first and foremost.

When looking at TotallyFootball's Transfer Index, which takes into account modern-day inflation involving past transfer deals, the £4.5m move is made to look even more of a masterstroke from those at the Hawthorns with his value – if that move took place today – coming in at £12m.

How Ben Foster's value compares to the West Brom squad

Using the Transfer Index, Foster would now be worth three times more than the Baggies most valuable asset currently in Jed Wallace when first joining the club – the ex-Millwall man coming in as being worth €4.1M (£3.5m) according to Football Transfers.

That's even with Wallace being as key as Palmer has been in patches for the promotion chasers this campaign so far, with the ageing midfielder helping himself to nine goals and assists across 35 appearances in all competitions.

West Brom's most valuable players – 2023/24

1. Jed Wallace

€4.1m (£3.5m)

2. Okay Yokuslu

€3.5m (£2.99m)

3. Brandon Thomas-Asante

€3.4m (£2.91m)

4. Conor Townsend

€3.4m (£2.91m)

5. Darnell Furlong

€3.4m (£2.91m)

Sourced by Football Transfers

Scanning the table above, Foster would be way out in front as the most valuable player compared to the likes of Okay Yokuslu and Brandon Thomas-Asante who are all aiming as a collective to return back to the level the goalkeeper succeeded at with West Brom.

After Watford, Foster's career would end with a whimper rather than a notable rebirth with the ex-Baggies man hanging up his boots at the Red Dragons after leaking 13 goals in just four games playing in the lower depths of League Two.

Palmer will strive to be remembered in the same vain as Foster with the Baggies gunning for promotion up to the top-flight, the current West Brom number one of the first names on his manager's teamsheet by being an everpresent in every XI fielded in the league to date.

Ben Foster of Wrexham

Now at 40 years of age, Foster is becoming known more as an internet personality than an excellent shot-stopper. But, to those with connections to the West Midlands club, the 6 foot 4 goalkeeper is very much still known for being a West Brom legend.

Dyche boldly drops Doucoure in predicted Everton lineup vs Burnley

Everton failed to take advantage of Newcastle United's current injury crisis, with the Toffees coming away with just a point in the 1-1 draw at St James' Park on Tuesday night.

Sean Dyche's side claimed a late equaliser after striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin stepped up to power his penalty past Martin Dubravka, with the club securing a crucial point in their hunt for Premier League survival.

Despite the result on Tyneside, Dyche's men have failed to win a single Premier League game in 2024, with the Toffees needing to push on if they are to stay in England's top flight next season.

Everton have a huge clash against Burnley at Goodison Park this weekend, with one player needing to be dropped from their last outing if they are to claim three vital points.

Abdoulaye Doucoure produced a below-par performance against the Magpies, with the former Watford man only winning 20% of his duels and needing time on the sideline to allow another player to excel.

With that being said, here's a potential look at the Toffees' starting XI to face Burnley…

1 GK – Jordan Pickford

Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford.

If the club do stay up this season, goalkeeper Jordan Pickford will be the man to thank, with the England international saving Dyche's side on more than one occasion.

The 30-year-old has kept eight clean sheets in the league this season, with his tally only bettered by Arsenal's David Raya.

His average of 3.1 saves per game has played a huge part in the club's attempts to stay up, with the captain undoubtedly going to start at Goodison this weekend.

2 RB – Ben Godfrey

ben-godfrey-everton-newcastle-united-terrible-flop-dyche

In recent weeks, the defender has enjoyed a mini-revival of his time with the Toffees, starting each of the last nine league matches, after just one start between August and December.

Despite playing in an unnatural right-back position, the defender has excelled and managed to keep club legend Seamus Coleman out of Dyche's starting lineup.

This weekend is another great opportunity for the former Norwich City man to build on his brilliant recent form.

3 CB – Jarrad Branthwaite

The 21-year-old has had an excellent campaign for the Toffees, with his brilliant form not going unnoticed, with the former Carlisle United youngster receiving an England call-up last month.

The centre-back has started 27 out of 30 Premier League matches during 2023/24, with the ace set to continue his successful partnership with James Tarkowski on Saturday.

4 CB – James Tarkowski

japhet-tanganga-james-tarkowski-everton-transfer-premier-league

The second half of Everton's long-term centre-back partnership is James Tarkowski, with the 31-year-old starting every single league match under Dyche this season.

He will face his former side on Saturday, with the former Claret looking to inflict yet more pain on Vincent Kompany's side and help claim all three points that would push them closer to an immediate return to the Championship.

5 LB – Vitaliy Mykolenko

The Ukrainian left-back produced a brilliant display away at Newcastle in midweek, with the 24-year-old's energetic playstyle allowing him to make ten passes into the final third – the most of any Everton player that night.

He's started to look really settled on the left side of the Toffees' defence, with the fans beginning to see why the club decided to pay £17m for his signature.

His good form will need to continue on Saturday, with the left-back tasked with keeping forward Jacob Bruun Larsen quiet, with the Burnley attacker scoring two goals in his last three Premier League outings.

6 RM – Ashley Young

Despite being 38 years old, Ashley Young has been an important part of Dyche's side this season, starting 20 games in the Premier League for the Toffees.

He was utilised in a right-midfield position on Tuesday night, with the former Manchester United man having a rare opportunity to showcase what he's capable of in attacking areas.

Although he had a fairly standard game, he deserves another opportunity to demonstrate his talents and stake his claim for a regular midfield role.

7 CM – Amadou Onana

Amadou Onana for Everton

Despite being replaced after just an hour in the week, the Belgian midfielder deserves a starting spot this weekend, with the outing against Burnley a great opportunity for the youngster to demonstrate his qualities.

The 22-year-old has a huge ceiling to develop and become a brilliant midfielder, with occasional poor performances to be expected given his tender age.

8 CM – Idrissa Gueye

Everton midfielder Idrissa Gueye

Experienced midfielder Idrissa Gueye has often been the man to partner Onana in the middle of the park for the Toffees this season, with the Senegalese crucial in ball-winning for Dyche's side.

The former PSG man won three tackles and ten duels in the draw at St James' a few days ago, with Gueye more than deserving of a second start in a row this weekend.

9 LM – Dwight McNeil

Dwight McNeil

Despite not scoring for Everton since December, the winger has been ever-present in the starting lineup. Dyche clearly trusts the 24-year-old given his constant selection, with the attacker needing to repay his manager's faith this weekend.

He's set to start against his former side, with the encounter potentially giving the wideman an added incentive to end his goalscoring drought and help push the Toffees further clear of any looming relegation threat whilst pushing the Clarets closer to the drop.

10 CAM – James Garner

Everton midfielder James Garner.

Midfielder James Garner was unlucky to not start the trip to Tyneside on Tuesday, with the youngster making a brilliant impact off the substitutes bench when given the opportunity by Dyche.

Fellow midfielder Doucoure endured a tough outing in midweek, with the £130k-per-week man – who hasn't scored since December – needing to be dropped, thus allowing Garner to potentially get the chance to play in the attacking midfield role ahead of Gueye and Onana.

His relentless pressing game coupled with his fantastic ball-striking ability make for a great combination in the number ten role, with the former Manchester United talent – who Dyche has dubbed "terrific" – deserving of a recall.
