Southampton "Expect" That £40k p/w Ace Will Depart St Mary’s

Southampton will 'expect' the likes of defender Duje Caleta-Car to leave St Mary's Stadium this summer ahead of their return to the Sky Bet Championship, according to Daily Express reporter Ryan Taylor.

Will Duje Caleta-Car leave Southampton this summer?

According to Turkish outlet Fanatik, Caleta-Car could follow his ex-teammate Mislav Orsic to Trabzonspor this summer, with an initial loan deal said to be on the table for the £40k-a-week ace.

Pianet Genoa via Football Italia claim that Serie A side Genoa have approached Southampton over the possibility of signing Caleta-Car this window, with a loan deal including an option-to-buy floated as a solution to end his woes on the South Coast.

Caleta Car only joined Southampton last year from Marseille in a deal worth £8 million, signing a four-year contract at the club, as per The Daily Mail. Former boss Ralph Hassenhuttl spoke highly of the Croatia international upon his arrival, stating to the media: "Duje is already a very established and experienced player, who has done an impressive job at his previous clubs. 'He is a big presence on the pitch and he will bring even more quality into our centre-back group."

Nevertheless, Caleta Car couldn't stop Southampton's eventual relegation despite scoring twice in 20 appearances across all competitions in his debut campaign, as per Transfermarkt.

Now, the Sibenik-born defender looks set for a fresh challenge ahead of 2023/24 and it looks as if it'll only be a matter of time before his next destination becomes apparent.

Speaking to GIVEMESPORT, Daily Express reporter Taylor agrees with the notion that Caleta-Car will be moved on and adds that he expects several other players to leave Southampton.

Taylor said: "I think there are some that will leave. I expect players like Caleta-Car to leave. Obviously, Lavia would be a great sell for Southampton because they can generate a lot of cash there.

"There's Walker-Peters as well. I think he'll get a Premier League move because he is a very solid defender. Ward-Prowse would also generate cash, so I think the future is bright for Southampton."

Who else could leave Southampton this window and where could they go?

In an unfortunate situation, it looks like open season has descended on the South Coast as several of their first-team players attract interest from the Premier League and beyond owing to Southampton's relegation.

The Daily Mail report that West Ham United have made a 'verbal offer' for Southampton captain James Ward-Prowse as the Hammers look to replace ex-captain Declan Rice.

Southampton's Romeo Lavia

Examining the case of young Southampton midfielder Romeo Lavia, both Arsenal and Liverpool are set to push each other all the way in their attempts to land the Belgium international, according to Football Insider.

Telegraph Sport claimed last month that Ryan Fraser could be offered up to Southampton as part of a swap deal that would see Tino Livramento move to Newcastle United.

Of course, the Saints have made inroads into building a new-look squad for the upcoming season, with Shea Charles and Ryan Manning arriving at St Mary's from Manchester City and Swansea City, respectively.

Nevertheless, the next few weeks will prove to be telling for the Saints as several of their star players get set to walk through the exit door at the club.

Leeds Can Unearth Next Beckford In Move For "Talented" Dynamo

Daniel Farke has inherited a hugely difficult task at Leeds United as he attempts to lead the club to an instant return to the Premier League.

His job has been made harder due to Rodrigo’s recent departure to Qatari side Al Rayyan. The Spaniard was Leeds’ top scorer last season with 15 goals in all competitions, with Luis Sinisterra in second on just seven.

The German coach has lost one of the club’s most influential and important players, as he must pinpoint a new, consistent source of goals for the upcoming season.

One player who can fill Rodrigo’s void is Emmanuel Dennis, who is on the lookout for a new club.

What’s the latest on Emmanuel Dennis to Leeds United?

Last month, it was reported by The Athletic that Dennis is very likely to leave Nottingham Forest this summer, with his representatives having already started the process of holding exploratory talks with interested parties.

It is understood that the 25-year-old is keen to remain in Europe and will resist any lucrative approaches from Saudi Arabia.

Furthermore, it seems that Forest may have already recruited his replacement, as they’re on the verge of sealing a £15m deal for Manchester United’s Anthony Elanga.

This may prompt Dennis to push harder for an exit – and he could do wonders at Elland Road.

Would Emmanuel Dennis be a good signing for Leeds United?

Last summer, the Nigerian secured a move to the east Midlands from Watford, but it didn't materialise as expected.

He only managed six Premier League starts and scored just twice, failing to play any notable part in Forest avoiding relegation in their first season back in the top flight for over two decades.

The forward will be more fondly remembered for his final season with the Hornets. He was unable to prevent the club from going down, but he performed admirably in a dismally below-average side.

During the 2021/22 campaign, he was Watford’s top scorer with ten goals as well as their best creator with six assists. Elsewhere, he averaged the highest rating (6.89), and recorded the most dribbles per game in the squad, as per WhoScored.

His string of impressive performances led to glowing praise from former manager Claudio Ranieri, who said: “[Dennis] is a very talented player. He’s fast, has good skill, always runs straight to the goal – I love these kinds of players.”

Having shown he can produce in the top flight, Farke should accelerate the club’s attempts to sign Dennis and give him the chance to mirror the empathic impact that Jermaine Beckford had during a glittering four-year spell in Yorkshire.

In 152 appearances between 2006 and 2010, the striker netted 85 times as he became a nightmare to contain during Leeds' time out of the top tier.

Jermaine Beckford

In 2010, the Jamaican memorably scored the only goal of the game in Leeds’ third-round FA Cup win over Manchester United to consign the Red Devils to their first defeat to lower-league opposition in the competition since 1984.

It is this prowess at the lower level, regardless of the opposition, that Dennis should look to emulate.

And given his aforementioned exploits in the Premier League, there is every chance he can indeed evoke the memories of Beckford's Elland Road career by excelling with Leeds in the Championship before spearheading their attack in the Premier League a year from now.

Therefore, if Leeds move for Dennis, it could see Farke instantly replace Rodrigo, whilst also potentially unearthing a Beckford-esque figure up top.

Kohli reclaims top spot; Hazlewood tops ODI bowling rankings

After the end of the last round of league matches in the ongoing Champions Trophy, India captain Virat Kohli and Australia quick bowler Josh Hazlewood have risen to the top of ICC ODI rankings

Josh Hazlewood – most wickets for a seamer in ODIs since January 2016

India captain Virat Kohli surpassed AB de Villiers and David Warner to reclaim the top spot in the ICC rankings for ODI batsmen. Australia fast bowler Josh Hazlewood, meanwhile, topped the ODI bowlers’ rankings for the first time in his career. South Africa quick Kagiso Rabada, who had gained the No.1 spot last month, dropped to fourth place.ESPNcricinfo Ltd

Unbeaten knocks of 81 and 76 against Pakistan and South Africa in the ongoing Champions Trophy helped Kohli overtake Warner and de Villers, who had climbed to No.1 in March this year. Kohli, who had briefly held the No. 1 ranking in January, has a one-point lead over Warner. De Villiers, who had scores of 4, 0 and 16 in the Champions Trophy, dropped two places, and trails Warner by 14 points. Joe Root and Kane Williamson were ranked fourth and fifth respectively.Hazlewood, who took nine wickets in three Champions Trophy matches, became the first Australian to top the ODI bowlers’ rankings since Mitchell Starc in October 2015. Imran Tahir and Starc retained their second and third rankings respectively. Afghanistan legspinner Rashid Khan gained 18 places to surge to seventh.India opener Shikhar Dhawan, who is the leading run-getter in the Champions Trophy so far, leapfrogged five of his peers to return to the top ten. Dhawan scored 271 runs in three innings during the league stage of the tournament, with two fifties and a century.ESPNcricinfo Ltd

In the allrounders’ list, Ben Stokes gained one place to displace Mitchell Marsh at No. 6, while Shakib Al Hasan retained his place as the top ODI allrounder. Stokes did much better on the batting rankings, gaining nine points to climb to a career-best 20th, following an unbeaten 102 against Australia.South Africa, who exited the Champions Trophy after two losses in three league matches, retained their No. 1 spot on the team rankings, leading Australia and India by two points. England gained two points to climb to fourth and have a three-point lead over New Zealand. If the final of the Champions Trophy is contested between India and England, and if India win, they will secure a slim lead over South Africa and become the No. 1 ODI team.

Everton: Toffees Enter Race For "World-Class" £20m Colossus To Partner Tarkowski

Everton have entered the race to sign former Manchester United captain Harry Maguire this summer, with Sean Dyche viewing the England international as the perfect option to complete the Goodison Park defence.

How much would Harry Maguire cost?

According to TEAMtalk, the Toffees are planning to join the line of suitors for Maguire with Manchester United seeking to recuperate funds following the summer's expenditure.

The 30-year-old has plummeted down the pecking order at Old Trafford but despite this wishes to remain at the club and fight for his place, with West Ham United already seeing a £20m offer rejected.

The aforementioned report claims that Dyche is ready to offload some players himself – namely defensive duo Mason Holgate and Michael Keane – to free up room and money to bolster the ranks, and if the club is successful in this regard, discussions for Maguire could enter the next stage.

How good is Harry Maguire?

It's fair to say that Maguire has not enjoyed the most fruitful of times over the past several years; despite lifting the Carabao Cup last season and ending Manchester United's five-year wait for silverware, he has regularly been skewered for his performances and has even been branded a "walking disaster" by journalist Samuel Luckhurst.

Despite joining the Theatre of Dreams fold for an exorbitant £80m from Leicester City in 2019, Maguire was restricted to just eight starts in the Premier League and is seemingly not currently boasting a starting berth in Erik ten Hag's team.

However, the one-time Hull City star remains an imposing and physical defender and could use a move away as a breath of fresh life onto his career, with Everton's backline pretty admirable last term despite the club's woes.

Harry Maguire has lost the armband.

James Tarkowski and Conor Coady formed the nucleus of the side's defence for much of the 2022/23 campaign and were hailed for their "hugely important" partnership by former boss Frank Lampard, though the latter has now concluded his loan spell and signed for Leicester.

Tarkowski, in particular, was imperious throughout the term, described as "outstanding" by Dyche and finishing the campaign with an average Sofascore rating of 7.20, having started all 38 fixtures, in which he kept nine clean sheets, and averaged a whopping 5.2 clearances per game. He also won 65% of his duels.

The former Burnley titan ranks among the top 1% of centre-halves across Europe's top five leagues over the past year for blocks, the top 6% for clearances and the top 8% for aerials won per 90, as per FBref, which underscores his robustness.

Would Maguire gel well with his £100k-per-week compatriot though? That will be the question on Dyche and co's lips.

Well, given his physicality and strength, partnered with his own prowess in the air, he might just; Maguire ranks among the top 11% of positional peers for blocks, the top 12% for aerials won and the top 19% for progressive carries per 90, which would leave the Toffees backline well protected from both ground attacks and aerial balls.

The £190k-per-week titan has previously been labelled as a "world-class centre-back" by former England manager Sven-Goran Eriksson and while he has fallen by the wayside of late, a move to Goodison Park could allow him to become the centrepiece of a side targetting a renaissance, one that could coincide with his own resurgence as he looks to impress before the European Championship next summer.

Morkel may put Test cricket first as career winds down

Morne Morkel is savouring every moment back in international career after his serious back injury but believes his career is ‘nearly finished’

Morne Morkel believes his career is ‘nearly finished’•AFP

Morne Morkel could consider playing only one format of international cricket, and it may well be Tests, as he reaches the twilight of his career. At 32, Morkel considers his career “nearly finished” and will meet with CSA at the end of the ongoing tour to England to discuss his future.Unlike some of his senior team-mates such as AB de Villiers and Faf du Plessis, Morkel does not appear to be eyeing the 2019 World Cup as a swansong, despite recent reappearances in the one-day team. Asked how long he could realistically see himself playing international cricket for, Morkel did not provide a time-frame but hinted it may not be too much longer.”I don’t know. After this tour we’ll see. I’ll speak with Cricket South Africa and see where they see me featuring,” he said. “I love playing for this team. But it’s not rocket science that they probably want to start looking, in white-ball cricket, at the 2019 World Cup. Am I going to part of those plans? If I can be around to help the younger guys find their feet, so be it. I’ll do that. For me the main focus is this tour and then we’ll go back and see how we go.”After playing just two of South Africa’s six matches in the Caribbean triangular series in mid-2016, Morkel was sidelined from one-day cricket for 11 months, initially with a back injury and then because other players were being looked at. He returned on this tour and played in the final ODI of the three-match series against England at Lord’s and in all three Champions Trophy games but seems to think the selectors are looking to the future.”My conditioning’s been good over the years and I really look after my body,” he said. “Mentally and physically I feel strong. But the World Cup is two or three years down the line and those are decisions they need to make.”South Africa’s current one-day attack includes Kagiso Rabada, who is the spearhead, allrounders Chris Morris and Wayne Parnell and death-bowling specialist Andile Phehlukwayo. It could also have room for Lungi Ngidi, the young quick who debuted in the T20 series against Sri Lanka in January and was being considered for the Champions Trophy squad before he was injured. Rabada, Phehlukwayo and Ngidi are all under 23 and are set to play key roles in South Africa’s future and even though South Africa have struggled to replace Kyle Abbott in the XI, Morkel may not see himself as the ideal candidate.Morne Morkel claimed the vital wicket of Joe Root in England’s first innings at Trent Bridge•Getty Images

His focus since the back problem, which he feared would end his career, has largely been on Test cricket. After making a successful comeback in the series against New Zealand in March, Morkel opted not to return to the IPL in order to get himself ready for the England series. He has also decided not to go to the CPL so he can prepare for a home summer that includes 10 Tests and South Africa’s own T20 event, the Global League. Morkel has not been named as one of the marquee players attached to a franchise for that tournament but may yet add his name to the draft. He is not ruling out T20 leagues entirely, but said international cricket is his first priority.”If there’s a T20 league I can go and play in and improve my skills and put my name into the hat for other tournaments, then I need to make that opportunity count. But the Proteas and this environment come first. So I need to focus on that.”Morkel has taken on more of a leadership role in the Test side over the last six months, something several squad members have mentioned as noticeable especially in the absence of Dale Steyn. In India in late 2015, when Steyn sat on the sidelines with a groin problem, Morkel bowled reverse swinging spells which, even though they did not help South Africa win, asked questions of the opposition. In New Zealand in March, Morkel was the bowler getting his speeds over 140kph. He has even developed a penchant for pitching it up when needed and has become South Africa’s go-to man to create pressure. The numbers don’t always reveal Morkel’s worth but his experience is invaluable to a Test side that relies heavily on the strength of its attack. Having always wanted to be part of the pack, Morkel admitted he is enjoying contributing while he still can.”In 2003, I was playing league cricket for a club called Endon, a first division club, and we got a day off and I came to Trent Bridge. I sat in the stands here watching the boys play. To play a Test match here, that’s what dreams are made of,” Morkel said. “For me, every time I get the ball, it’s about really enjoying the moment. In the past I put myself under a lot of pressure, but I think those sort of days are gone. I know how quickly a career can change. And I’m not starting my career. My career’s nearly finished. So I am just enjoying the moment.”

Arsenal Could Sign "Powerful" £34m Gem To Ease Jesus Burden

Arsenal secured their first piece of silverware of the season yesterday, but had to do so without their main marksman once again…

Is Gabriel Jesus injured?

With Gabriel Jesus having undergone knee surgery just last week, the Brazilian limped about Wembley Stadium as he watched his side battle from a goal down to defeat Manchester City on penalties.

Whilst the initial synopsis suggested his absence would only stretch to "a few weeks", when he suffered the same fate in December 2022, he did not play again until mid-March.

Therefore, the recent report by TEAMtalk makes perfect sense, as it notes that the Gunners have enquired about the possibility of signing Montpellier forward Elye Wahi.

Read the latest Arsenal transfer news HERE…

With the persisting ailments plaguing the 26-year-old, perhaps such an acquisition could prove instrumental in ensuring there is little to no drop in quality when Jesus inevitably gets injured again during the campaign. However, it is noted that the French outfit will demand a lofty fee of €40m (£34m) for his services.

How good is Elye Wahi?

When fit, few forwards suit Mikel Arteta's system as perfectly as Jesus. He is tricky, deceptively strong, creative and clinical, with the athleticism and intelligence to lead a press too.

Last campaign also saw him post 11 goals and assist a further seven across just 26 Premier League appearances, outlining how their offensive threat skyrockets when he is in the team.

However, peering back through his entire injury history, it is clear to see that the recent bout of trauma is not merely misfortune. He has a record of struggling with his fitness, and therefore it could be argued that he alone cannot be trusted to lead the line for a full campaign.

That suggests that the potential swoop for Wahi could prove incredibly profitable, to offer a fine alternative for when Jesus is absent, and potentially one day usurp him.

After all, he does show steady signs of improvement with each passing year, thriving in his homeland with pace, power and prolific finishing.

mikel-arteta

Last season saw the 20-year-old post 19 goals and assist a further six in Ligue 1 alone, building upon his ten-goal haul from the term prior. Given his natural goalscoring progression, the 2023/24 season could see the Frenchman shatter records.

However, Wahi offers far more than just a focal point, as his speed and link-up play is mightily impressive for someone so young. Whilst he might offer a wildly different style to Jesus, he could prove just as effective in leading that press that makes the Brazilian so invaluable.

The young forward posted 0.7 key passes per game last campaign in the French top-flight, alongside an admirable 71% pass accuracy to emphasise his ability to bring others into the game, via Sofascore.

Ex-Caen academy director Francis de Taddeo has also emphasised his physical assets in the past, stating: "He is a powerful, athletic and fast player with a range of dribbling skills where only he knows what he is going to do next."

After that fine showing against their title rivals, Arteta seemingly has little to worry about going into the new Premier League season. However, the fitness of Jesus remains a sole issue that could be solved with one final foray into the market.

Bad ball a useful ploy when under attack – Zampa

The legspinner, who was bashed for three consecutive sixes by Hardik Pandya in the first ODI, feels bowling bad balls willfully could sometimes buck the pressure off bowlers

Alagappan Muthu in Kolkata 19-Sep-20172:45

Bowling right lengths important in India – Zampa

Perhaps because three of his deliveries – at a length he was meant to bowl – disappeared for sixes, Australia legspinner Adam Zampa realises the value of willfully bowling bad balls in one-day cricket. He was bashed for three consecutive sixes by Hardik Pandya during the course of a lower-order recovery that became match-changing for India. In the aftermath of that 26-run defeat, captain Steven Smith admitted that his lead spinner may have bowled a bit too full. On Tuesday, Zampa said the same, contemplating the possibility of giving up a single to deep point as a good option against a batsman on a roll.”The length over here is very important, particularly with the size of the grounds,” he said. “In Australia, you can mix up your length a little bit and you’ll get away with it purely because of the size of the Ovals. And here, sometimes I think you’ve got to try and bowl a bad ball, almost, to buck the pressure off you, to get a player off strike. A cut shot out to deep point can play a good role, sometimes. I was thinking the other day but just didn’t execute it well enough. I pride myself on bowling well under pressure and the other day I just didn’t execute as well as I’d have liked to.”R Ashwin had echoed similar sentiments to ESPNcricinfo in 2016 that an over of six well-constructed dot balls might be the way forward – although he was talking specifically about T20 cricket. As Pandya showed, batsmen are happy to get under a bowler – especially a spinner – when he hits a good length and hit straight – which carries much less risk than cross-bat slogs.”You never like to be hit for three sixes in a row,” Zampa said. “But I guess it does happen, it’s probably happened to Shane Warne and guys like that too. As long as you don’t put yourself under too much pressure and learn from those situations, and hopefully if it happens again, I’ll get him out earlier, I’ll get out of that situation better.”Zampa eventually got Pandya out for 83 – although too late in this case – in his ninth over with a flatter, faster ball. “It is tough sometimes knowing that you just have to execute this ball because if you don’t, it’ll probably going to be the same result. So as I said, a bad ball can sometimes be your best way out and just getting the wicket, that’s your job as a spinner in the middle overs.”Against teams like India, there’s always going to be a partnership, and there are going to be situations like that that you have to get out of and I think the best thing to do in those situations is to just take a deep breath and think about what the team needs – whether getting that player off strike or getting him out and that could be the difference of 20, 30, 40 runs that you have to chase.”
