Diangana Exit Could Be Sanctioned After Update On £4m-Rated Ace

Carlos Corberan can be forgiven for growing rather anxious with less than a month to go until West Bromwich Albion kick off their Championship campaign away at Blackburn Rovers.

The Baggies have lost captain and key player Dara O'Shea to Burnley, while a number of others – Jake Livermore, Rico Richards and Tom Rogic among them – have departed since the end of last season.

Who have West Brom signed?

Corberan clearly needs to replenish his squad, but Albion have yet to bring in any new faces this summer. Rather worryingly, reported targets are also few and far between.

Indeed, according to Birmingham Live, more outgoings can be expected soon as the Baggies continue to adapt following the end of their Premier League parachute payments.

Grady Diangana is one of those reportedly being eyed up by Championship rivals, Southampton being among them, but the Express & Star reports Albion will not be forced to sell on the cheap.

Should West Brom keep Grady Diangana?

Diangana scored four goals and assisted a further three in 31 Championship appearances for West Brom last season. At a rate of 0.33 goals and assists per 90 minutes, as per FBref, the former England U21 international ranked fourth among Albion players in that metric, behind John Swift (0.42), Daryl Dike (0.60) and Tom Rogic (0.61).

That perhaps explains why just 39% of West Brom supporters said they would keep Diagana at The Hawthorns this summer in a recent Birmingham Live poll. Diangana has his qualities and can provide moments of "magic" at times, according to journalist Graeme Brown, but Albion fans clearly feel they can find an upgrade in that position.

Furthermore, Dike's return to Albion's training base this week ensures West Brom will not be as reliant on wide man Diangana next season. Dike scored seven goals in 23 league appearances last season, with that return of 0.52 goals per 90 minutes the best of anyone at the club.

The United States international was struck down by an Achilles injury in April that cut his season short, but he appears to be ahead of schedule – or at the very least on track – in his bid to return to action within six months of that untimely setback.

If Albion can get Dike back up and running by October, it will significantly boost their chances of challenging for a play-off spot under Corberan, just like they did after the ex-Leeds United assistant took over from Steve Bruce with the club lingering towards the foot of the table last season.

Dike is valued at £4m by CIES Football Observatory and was described as an "unbelievable" player by second-tier veteran Neil Warnock, who also argued the American was the Championship's best striker when making those comments in April 2021.

While Dike is on the comeback trail in the hope of boosting West Brom's promotion aspirations, Diangana's future is far less clear. Albion could do with keeping hold of as many players as possible at the moment, but the Congo-born winger may be deemed surplus to requirements if Corberan can find that elusive replacement out wide.

Panadura-Kalutara investigation delayed

The inquiry into a suspicious first-class match in January will take “two to three” more weeks, SLC has said

Andrew Fidel Fernando30-Mar-2017The inquiry into a suspicious first-class match in January will take “two to three” more weeks, SLC has said.SLC had appointed a committee to head an inquiry into a Premier League Tournament match between Kalutara Physical Culture Club and eventual Tier B winners Panadura Sports Club, when a rival team made allegations that the result of that match had been artificially engineered. Though it was hoped that committee would produce a final report on their findings within a few weeks, with the case having since become more complex, further time was required.”The inquiry might take a little longer – maybe two or three weeks,” SLC vice-president K Mathivanan said. “There are so many witnesses who have to be heard from. Also, they will be allowed to be examined by the Panadura and KCC lawyers. Then there will be natural justice. It’s like a court scenario, but justice will be done.”That match had drawn suspicion primarily because of the nature of the third and final day’s scoring rates. Panadura, who were still making their first-innings response to Kalutara’s 390, hit 223 at a run rate of 10.34 to begin the last day, and the scoring continued at this breakneck pace. Kalutara were all out for 197 in 22.5 overs, in their second innings; Panadura then chased down the target of 165 inside 14 overs. All told, a staggering 587 runs were scored in a single day.The result proved to be pivotal to the league’s outcome, as Panadura went on to beat Sri Lanka Ports Authority Cricket Club to the Tier B title.

Wolves Eyeing Move For 24-Year-Old Defender

Wolves are battling Tottenham for the signing of Galatasaray defender Victor Nelsson during the summer transfer window, according to a new update.

Who is Victor Nelsson?

The Dane has been an eye-catching performer for the Turkish giants of late, having joined from Copenhagen in 2021 and become a key man since then. Last season, he started 33 matches in the Super Lig, winning an average of 3.3 clearances and 3.2 aerial duel win per game.

Nelsson was also part of Denmark's squad at the 2022 World Cup, and he made one start during the competition, coming in the 2-1 defeat to France. He has won 10 caps for his country in total, not to mention a whopping 35 for the Under-21s, prior to breaking into the senior setup.

Given the 24-year-old's impressive form for Galatasaray, they could find it extremely difficult to retain his services beyond the end of the current transfer window, even though his current deal doesn't run out until the summer of 2026. Wolves have been linked with a move for him in the recent past, and it is speculation that isn't going away, alongside rumours regarding right-back Matt Doherty.

Reports have suggested that Doherty is closing in on a return to Molineux after becoming a free agent, with Nelsson potentially joining him in the Midlands.

Could Wolves sign Victor Nelsson?

According to Ekstra Bladet [via Sport Witness], Wolves are "fighting" to sign Nelsson over Spurs this summer, as they look to bring in a top-quality defensive addition. The player himself does prefer the idea of a move to north London, however, potentially seeing them as a bigger club that can offer a greater chance of success moving forward in his career.

Wanderers could be boosted by the fact that Spurs are reluctant to pay the player's €25m (£21.2m) release clause that Galatasaray are demanding for his services, though, and the report says they are in "urgent" need of a new central defender, following Nathan Collins' transfer to Brentford.

Nelsson's future is believed to belong "in the Premier League", according to the update, but negotiations over a potential move could end up being "prolonged". Meanwhile, Galatasaray vice-president Erden Timur has admitted that the centre-back is one of numerous players who could move on in the near future:

"There are concrete offers for our players. There are offers for Nelsson, Zaniolo, Sacha Boey, Cicaldau, Morutan, Kerem, Yunus, Barış, Taylan, Emre, Emin Bayram and Berkan. Fortunately, we have a good squad. There are also offers for our local football players from beautiful leagues in Europe. Whoever goes, they have very good alternatives."

Nelsson, who talent scout Jacek Kulig once hailed as a "monster" at the back, could be a strong signing by Wolves this summer, immediately making up for the loss of Collins, who was a solid performer throughout the 2022/23 campaign, starting 19 Premier League games and enjoying an 88.1% pass completion rate.

In comparison, the Galatasaray defender completed 93.2% of his passes in his aforementioned World Cup appearance against France, highlighting the quality that he possesses on the ball.

At 24, Nelsson is at a brilliant age to come in and be a formidable signing for Wanderers for a number of years, possibly shining under Julen Lopetegui and potentially forging a strong partnership with the likes of Max Kilman, should the latter stay put at Molineux this summer, making this a move to watch.

Tottenham Could Land Hojbjerg Heir In £25m "Jewel"

For all the excitement surrounding the new Ange Postecoglou era at Tottenham Hotspur, the recent 3-2 defeat to rivals West Ham United in the club's opening pre-season game has showcased that work still needs to be done in order for the Lilywhites to shake off last season's baggage.

In order to try and spark an improvement on that rather dismal 2022/23 campaign, the ex-Celtic boss does appear keen to oversee something of a squad clearout at N17, with long-serving skipper, Hugo Lloris among those looking destined to depart.

One perhaps more surprise exit that could occur is the sale of previous everpresent, Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, with recent reports suggesting that the Danish midfielder – who has started 109 of the club's last 114 Premier League games – could be on his way to Atletico Madrid.

That high profile departure will likely spark a need for a quality replacement in the centre of the park, with Postecoglou having perhaps already identified a potential dream heir to the 27-year-old…

Who could replace Hojbjerg at Spurs?

According to a recent report from 90min, the north Londoners – as well as a host of other Premier League clubs – are believed to have been offered the chance to land Fluminense starlet, André, having held talks with the 22-year-old's representatives.

As per the piece, it is currently Fulham who are seemingly leading the race for the Brazilian's signature, with a fee of around £25m having been mooted – after the Cottagers failed to secure a £20m deal back in January.

Who is Fluminense midfielder André?

If Postecoglou is looking to replace Hojbjerg at the base of the midfield this summer, then the experienced coach would certainly be wise to look to André as a possible bargain option, with the 5 foot 9 sensation having showcased his credentials in his homeland of late.

Tottenham midfielder Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg.

The one-cap Brazil international – who has racked up 142 club appearances for his current side – seemingly has the tools to be able to succeed the current Tottenham man at N17, showcased by his innate composure when in possession.

That is shown by the fact that while Hojbjerg impressively ranks in the top 8% among his European peers for pass completion (at an average of 88.2% per 90), the Fluminense gem is even more secure on the ball, having achieved an average pass accuracy rate of 93.2% per 90 across the last 365 days.

The youngster – who has been lauded for "superb technique" by talent scout Jacek Kulig – also shares Hojbjerg's desire to try and dictate proceedings where possible as he averages 76.06 attempted passes per 90, with the experienced Dane averaging 65.70 in that regard, while ranking in the top 12% in Europe.

Not just a lightweight option, however, André – who has been dubbed a "jewel" by Kulig – is also adept at winning back possession for his side having recorded 3.8 tackles and interceptions per game on average from his 12 league appearances this season, with his Tottenham counterpart just behind after averaging three tackles and interceptions per game from his 35 league starts last term.

With the younger man also providing the benefit of his abilty to drive forward from deep – having averaged 1.6 successful dribbles per game, in contrast to just 0.9 for Hojbjerg – then he could well prove to be Postecoglou's new midfield general next season.

The aim now will just be to see if that rival interest in the promising playmaker…

Cook's one-day form earns North-South spot

Alastair Cook’s impressive form in the Royal London Cup has earned him an automatic spot in next year’s North v South one-day series

Alastair Cook’s impressive form in the Royal London Cup has earned him an automatic spot in next year’s North v South one-day series.Cook, who was sacked as England’s one-day captain shortly before the 2015 World Cup, scored 503 runs in Essex’s group stage campaign, from which they secured a home semi-final. That tally put him third in the PCA’s MVP rankings, thereby qualifying him for the pre-season series. Only England-qualified players are eligible to play for the North and South with four spots in each side determined by the MVP rankings. The rest of the names are decided by the England selectors. The matches are billed as a chance to push for England selection with the PCA release saying they will be “watched closely by the England selectors and management in their planning for the 2019 ICC World Cup.” But while Cook has never officially retired from ODIs, it would be far-fetched to suggest he will come into the reckoning. It is also possible that the North v South contests – which this year were held in the UAE in late March – will clash with England’s Test series in New Zealand, set for the end of March. Although Cook stepped down as Test captain in January, barring an unlikely sequence of events or injury he will be involved in those Tests which follow the Ashes in Australia. The other players to qualify through the MVP rankings for the South are Hampshire’s James Vince, Kent opener Daniel Bell-Drummond and Essex allrounder Ravi Bopara. The North are set to include Test batsman Keaton Jennings, Sam Hain from Warwickshire, Yorkshire captain Gary Ballance and Derbyshire allrounder Shiv Thakor. However, as with Cook, England commitments could impact the availability of Jennings and Ballance.Jennings, Hain, Bell-Drummond and Vince were involved in the first North-South series. Batsmen have dominated those qualifying automatically from this year’s group stage in what has been a high-scoring competition. Last year, seam bowlers Matt Coles, Tim Groenewald and Harry Gurney earned automatic selection alongside left-arm spinner Graeme White and allrounders Tim Bresnan, Lewis Gregory and Liam Dawson.

Collective might was Mumbai's winning formula – Rohit

Unlike the team’s 2013 and 2015 IPL title runs, in 2017 Mumbai did not rely on individual brilliance to carry them to the championship, a point of pride for Rohit Sharma

Arun Venugopal in Hyderabad21-May-2017Mumbai Indians’ third IPL title was a product of a united group combining teamwork with intelligence, their captain Rohit Sharma believes, and this was best exemplified by their plucky one-run win over Rising Pune Supergiant in the 2017 final on Sunday night. While Mumbai’s earlier title wins in 2013 and 2015 were driven by strong individual performances, Rohit took pride in how the latest conquest was achieved by a collective assault.”I personally feel it is how you prepare at the start of the tournament – getting your combinations right and going on to the field is the most critical part of winning the tournament,” Rohit said. “Individual brilliance can win you a few games, but what is required to win this championship is team unity, team work and intelligence.”We spoke about it at the start of the tournament. If you look at the first two titles we won, we probably had one batsman in the top five [leading run-getters]. We didn’t have [even] one batsman in the top-five this time which is a little bit sad, but that goes to show that different individuals have come up at different times and taken up responsibility. That is the hallmark of this team, especially this year.”We’ve never relied on one individual to win us the game. Today was the perfect example. The bowling unit came in together. Again, we have got a few youngsters, a few inexperienced players and a few legends in our bowling unit. It was a combination of both, and we gelled quite nicely. We mixed it up nicely.”In their previous two finals, Mumbai set a target and let the bowlers do their thing. So when Rohit elected to bat on Sunday night, they were merely sticking to a tried and tested template.”In a big game, it’s good to put runs on the board,” he said. “The history at this place is such that there have been 200 runs scored in an innings and also just 140. So if you don’t bat well, you won’t make a big target.” There was acknowledgement in the team talk at the halfway mark that, with 130, they had given themselves only a below-par total to defend. But, that wouldn’t deflate their morale.”I don’t think we applied ourselves too well. Our target was between 140 and 160. If we had tried to overreach to 180, then you could’ve been bowled out for 120,” Rohit said. “So our talk was that we try and make 140 so we may even get to 160. One-hundred and sixty on this wicket would’ve been a match-winning score, as you saw.”When you are playing on a slow pitch, it’s important to believe you can defend any target when you are fielding. So that was the talk when we came into the change room after our poor batting display. We spoke about how we played our last game against one of the better batting units in the tournament – KKR – and bowled them out for 105 [107]. Why can’t we do it here? The guys knew the challenge but they rose to the occasion”.Mumbai’s defence began in nervy fashion with a few fielding lapses. The most glaring mistake was made by Krunal Pandya, who fluffed a simple chance offered by Ajinkya Rahane, who was then on 14, at short extra-cover in the fourth over. Rahane went on to make 44. Rohit said the team had to regroup at the first strategic time-out and address the anxiety. The message was simple: don’t overreach, just force the batsmen to make mistakes.”When you are defending such a low target, it’s so important for the fielders to try and create some magic – taking a brilliant catch or stopping those crucial runs,” Rohit said. “We spoke about it in the change room that we wanted to add 20 runs extra with our fielding. But yeah, the first ten overs we were a little sloppy in the field.”These things can happen, sometimes you are so nervous you try and overdo it. [During] the break we had after six overs, we just got together and asked everyone to be calm. You can’t come and play your shots; it’s such a slow wicket. We always had that belief that things can change anytime.”We had to stay in the game for 20 overs. [It] didn’t matter if they create a partnership for 10 overs or whatever, we wanted to stay in the game. One wicket here and there and things can change. And that’s exactly what happened. We squeezed in and spinners came in and bowled those dot balls, created pressure, which made them play big shots. That’s where they made mistakes.”Rohit Sharma: ‘We always knew we had a great backup in Johnson’•BCCI

One of the key architects of Mumbai’s successful night with the ball was Mitchell Johnson. Entrusted with defending 10 runs off the last over, Johnson conceded four runs off the first ball but hit back with the wickets of Manoj Tiwary and Pune captain Steven Smith off successive deliveries. With four required to win off the last ball, Johnson held his nerve.”Mitchell McClenaghan, who was playing well for us, was injured and unfortunately he couldn’t find a place in the finals, but we always knew we had a great backup in Johnson, who is again a proven customer,” Rohit said. “He has done it for Australia and Mumbai as well. He has been in this atmosphere as well. I could happily rely on him when I needed him the most. The last over was very crucial. Steven Smith was set, batting really well. So is Dan Christian, he has played against him on many occasions.Rohit also lauded the Pandya brothers – Krunal and Hardik – for contributing in every facet of the game. While Hardik has played the finisher’s role and scored 250 runs at a strike rate of 156.25, Krunal has clicked with both bat and ball in the tournament. He made 243 runs from 11 innings with the bat and picked up 10 wickets while being the team’s second most economical bowler behind Harbhajan Singh. In the final, it was his 38-ball 47 that nudged Mumbai towards a decent total following which he bowled a typically tight spell of left-arm spin.”I think both Pandya brothers have something special in them,” Rohit said. “When you see them on the field, they are so excited to play the game. They want to contribute in some or the other way. It’s just not about bowling or batting; they contribute in fielding as well which is such a critical part in this format.”Krunal has become mature now. Last year he was nervous to start with. Now he knows he is a core member of the squad. He just goes out and plays freely. He has got no pressure. Of course, if you drop the catch, there is a chance of coming back and bowling a good over. That’s exactly what he did.”
