Man United Takeover Update: Glazers Lower Asking Price

Manchester United may be sold for "lower than the often quoted £6bn ($7.5bn)", according to reliable CBS reporter Ben Jacobs.

What's the latest takeover news?

The Manchester United takeover took yet another twist this week in what is fast becoming never-ending torture for supporters, as details emerged over the bid from Sheikh Jassim bin Hamad Al Thani.

According to Jacobs, and now widely reported elsehwere, Sheikh Jassim's offer has led to confusion because it "includes the debt & around £0.8bn ($1bn) in pledged investment". The Glazers will not include pledged investment in their decision making and will only base their valuation on the actual offer for the shares, of which the controversial family currently possess 69 per cent. This means Sheikh Jassim's bid is actually only around £4bn ($5bn), which is way shy of the often reported £6bn ($7.5bn) price tag.

That makes the Qatari's bid lower than what's on offer from Sir Jim Ratcliffe, CEO of INEOS, with "some sources indicating" the latter's bid has actually been superior right the way through the process, in what is a huge update to the ongoing takeover saga.

Some light in the tunnel for supporters?

While the supporters hoping for Qatari riches will no doubt be disheartened by the latest major twist in the tale, there is some light at the end of the tunnel, as Jacobs reports the asking price is actually lower than £6bn.

He says: "It is now understood the Glazers may strongly consider an outright sale for between £4.8bn ($6bn) and £5.6bn ($7bn), which is a bit lower than the often quoted £6bn ($7.5bn)."

This of course brings the gap between the Glazers and Sheikh Jassim right down, and fans on both sides of the matter will surely be excited by his rumoured plans for the club. The Nine Two Foundation say they want to "return the Club to its former glories both on and off the pitch" and "invest in the football teams, the training centre, the stadium and wider infrastructure, the fan experience and the communities the Club supports".

There are already reports that the potential new owners are eyeing up superstar signings like Neymar and Jude Bellingham, signings which would certainly bring back the fear factor around Old Trafford, but fans will now simply have to wait and see if they up their offer to try and eclipse Ratcliffe and get closer to the Glazers' asking price.

Burnley Could Land Roberts Heir In 19 y/o Starlet

Burnley ended their phenomenal 2022/23 campaign on Monday as they beat Cardiff 3-0 at Turf Moor in the final match of the season.

Vincent Kompany's side finished on a staggering 101 points as they won the Championship title in style to gain promotion back up to the Premier League.

The Clarets must now begin to prepare for life in the top tier and could have a busy summer transfer window ahead of them to build a squad capable of competing in a higher division.

Whilst promotion provides Burnley with the possible opportunity to go into Europe to sign multi-million pound, experienced, players from some of the major leagues, the club could also use their new funds to add to their pool of young talent.

One prospect who has been linked with a move to Turf Moor this summer is Motherwell gem Max Johnston, who has caught the eye in Scotland this season.

Who is Max Johnston?

The 19-year-old defender is a promising young right-back who is currently playing in the Scottish Premiership and he could be the long-term heir to Connor Roberts' position in the side.

Burnley right-back Connor Roberts.

Burnley's current first-choice option in the role enjoyed a sublime season in the Championship, having averaged a Sofascore rating of 7.00 across 43 appearances whilst he also chipped in with four goals and six assists, and averag ed one chance created per match for his teammates.

The Welshman also made 1.7 tackles and interceptions per outing, winning 56% of his duels, and proved himself to be reliable at both ends of the pitch – bombing on to support the attack without being a liability in defence.

Johnston, meanwhile, has averaged a Sofascore rating of 6.75 across 15 appearances in the Premiership. The teen gem has provided two goals and three assists from right-back, whilst also making 1.8 tackles and interceptions per match.

The Middlesbrough-born full-back, whose delivery from out wide was hailed as "fantastic" by ex-Scotland winger Neil McCann, has shown huge promise at such a young age with those performances.

He has showcased his ability to be a difference-maker in the final third whilst also remaining active out of possession and these statistics indicate that the prospect is similar to Roberts in style, with both defenders making an impact on both ends.

Johnston is eight years younger than the ex-Swansea man and could spend the next couple of years learning from the 27-year-old to develop his game before eventually taking over from him in the starting XI, which is why this could be a shrewd move by Kompany even if it does not immediately improve his side.

Callum Jackson, who was released by Sussex last year because of financial cutbacks, answered Kent’s emergency call for a wicketkeeper in Cardiff. He travelled from Kent on Tuesday night to deputise for Adam Rouse who has a broken finger which needs an operation. There was little prospect of a result to the game once 104.1 overs had been lost during the first two days, with both teams content with bonus points, although Glamorgan, despite their 12 points, remain at the bottom of Division 2.Had the weather not intervened, there could have been an interesting final day, with Kent chasing a target on a pitch that favoured the seamers.Callum Jackson•ECB

Glamorgan resumed on 22 for 0 on the final morning, but added only seven runs before Jacques Rudolph again failed, pulling a short delivery from Mitchell Claydon to the fielder stationed on the long leg boundary. Mark Wallace, another senior batsman in need of runs, mixed caution with aggression to add 52 with Will Bragg- before Bragg was bowled by Matt Coles for 22. Wallace went on to score 52 with seven fours, until he touched one to Jackson.Callum Jackson•ECB

Chris Cooke quickly followed, leg before playing across a delivery from Claydon, who then dismissed David Lloyd three balls later with the combined efforts of three fielders; the batsman edged the ball to fourth slip who diverted to third slip and eventually to Tom Latham at second slip who held on to spare his colleagues’ blushes.Aneurin Donald and Graham Wagg then averted a total collapse by adding 80 for the sixth wicket, with Donald, scoring an attractive 67- his third championship fifty of the season- from 68 balls with nine boundaries. Wagg went on to score his second fifty of the game, exceed 500 runs for the third successive season, being particularly severe on James Tredwell’s off spin whom he struck for 22 in one over.He was undefeated on 64, and now needs only 42 more runs to become Glamorgan’s leading run scorer in the championship this season .Both teams shook hands at 4.55pm when Glamorgan declared at 279 for 6- a lead of 348.Rudolph was pleased by his team’s overall performance- especially the two seamers Michael Hogan and Timm Van Der Gugten- and felt that” had we not lost so much time because of the weather, we could have won the game. But we are on an upward curve, and we are not far away from that championship win.”Kent captain Sam Northeast said that “after two weeks of white ball cricket, we found it tough to adjust, and we were not clinical enough after reducing them to 137 for 6 in the first innings but I was happy as they progressed from then on”.

Tottenham: Harry Kane Could Stay if Levy Hires "Genius" Manager

Tottenham Hotspur are in desperate need of a new manager and a refreshed playing squad, yet fans would likely agree that keeping Harry Kane stands above all else.

The supreme forward has already cemented himself into the club's history books as their all-time top scorer and seems destined to one day topple Alan Shearer's Premier League record too.

Regardless how his career culminates, there is no doubt that the 29-year-old will be remembered as a legend. However, one thing that seemingly continues to irk the England captain is a lack of silverware.

In 2017, he famously claimed:

"I just want to win trophies. I don't think there's a day that goes past where I don't wake up and think I want to win something."

He would then set himself a time frame to achieve such a goal, which has since long gone: "In 3 years' time if I haven't won a few trophies by then I think it'll be disappointing."

luciano-spalletti-victor-osimhen-napoli

It has now been nearly six years since that fateful interview, and his trophy cabinet remains as empty as the day he began his career.

As such, links with moves away are a constant, with Manchester United the latest to plot to snatch him. However, Daniel Levy could seek to throw one last Hail Mary in order to convince his star man to stay, by appointing Luciano Spalletti to take their managerial hot seat.

Will Luciano Spalletti join Spurs?

Having been accredited with an interest by two Italian journalists, first Ciro Venerato and more recently Paolo Bargiggia (via Sport Witness), both have combined to suggest Spurs can offer a far greater salary that would trump the contract extension proposed by Napoli.

The 64-year-old tactician, who prefers an attacking philosophy built around a 4-3-3 shape, has earned widespread praise for his work this season in claiming the Serie A title.

In reawakening a sleeping giant in Naples, Spalletti has marked himself out as one of Europe's most sought-after coaches, clearly sparking Levy's attention.

His brimming trophy cabinet alone would be enough to tempt the club's hierarchy to move, but also this winner's mentality might be enough to also convince Kane that this manager could bring him the silverware he so richly craves.

Also, with personal accolades similarly high on his list too, the fact that the Italian tactician has worked wonders with Victor Osimhen could persuade the £200k-per-week finisher that this remains the best place to take him to such glory. It is clear the 24-year-old forward thinks highly of his current boss too, having branded him a "genius" only last month.

With the Nigerian having scored 23 and assisted five in just 28 league appearances, there is reason to believe that Kane could take his scoring to the next level under this kind of tutelage, despite having already hit over 20 goals in six of his last nine seasons, all of which surpassed at least 16 goals.

Keeping the legendary striker in north London is likely to be the highest priority for Levy, but he could achieve this whilst also hiring a top head coach, should he appoint the outstanding manager that is Spalletti.

Mosaddek Hossain struck back-to-back sixes to seal Abahani Limited’s win over Prime Bank Cricket Club•BCB

Ashok Menaria’s impressive all-round performance led Prime Doleshwar Sporting Club to the top of the DPL points table with a five-wicket win over Gazi Group Cricketers in Mirpur.Menaria’s unbeaten 61-ball 59 that included two fours and sixes steered Doleshwar’s chase of 214 after hostile opening spells from pacers Mohammad Sharif and Sajedul Islam had reduced them to 70 for 3 in the 24th over.Wicketkeeper Anamul Haque took a brilliant catch after opener Imtiaz Hossain top-edged a pull. Just as the ball was going over his head, Anamul leapt backwards and completed a one-handed catch to give Gazi Group an early breakthrough. Robiul Islam Robi and Raqibul Hasan added 42 runs in the next 11.4 overs before their wickets, in the space of five overs, tied Gazi Group down.Menaria lifted Doleshwar by first adding 64 runs for the fourth wicket with Nasir Hossain, who scored 40 off 56 balls, and then 70 runs for the fifth wicket with Rony Talukdar, who made 43 off 45 balls. Sharif and Sajedul’s efforts with the ball were undone by sloppy fielding. Gazi Group dropped as many as five catches, and both bowlers had to settle with one wicket each.Earlier, Gazi Group had slipped to 97 for 5 by the 33rd over, with both in-form openers Anamul and Shamsur Rahman falling cheaply. Elias Sunny’s 46 dragged his side past 150, after which a 51-run stand for the eighth wicket between Farhad Hossain and Sharif took them to 213 for 8. Menaria was the pick of the bowlers with figures of 3 for 29 in nine overs, including a maiden.Abahani Limited finally had their big players firing, in their five-wicket win over Prime Bank Cricket Club at the BKSP-3 ground. They are placed third in the points table, with 12 points from 10 matches.Yusuf Pathan, fresh off the IPL, slammed seven fours and two sixes in his 47-ball 60, but when he fell in the 28th over, Abahani still needed 89 to reach the 241-run target. Shakib Al Hasan was dismissed for 3 in the next over, but Mosaddek Hossain then anchored the chase with an unbeaten 64 off 49, his second successive half-century.Having been stuck in traffic at the Dhaka-Sarvar highway, Yusuf had arrived 41 minutes after scheduled start of play. But the opposition captain Shuvagata Hom and the match officials allowed him to take the field, despite being late.Mosaddek and Liton Das added an unbroken 87 runs for the sixth wicket as Abahani sealed the win with 33 balls to spare. Liton stayed unbeaten on 25 off 51 balls.Abahani captain Tamim Iqbal had laid the platform with 40 off 46 balls, before falling to Shuvagata in the 13th over. Nazmul Hossain Shanto and Yusuf then put on 94 runs for the third wicket to help Abahani eat into the target.Earlier, Prime Bank posted 240 for 9 in 50 overs with Nurul Hasan top-scoring with 46. Openers Mehedi Maruf (26) and Shanaj Ahmed (24) got starts, but they were dismissed in successive overs. Prime Bank were further pushed back when Sabbir Rahman and new Indian recruit Unmukt Chand exited for a duck and 2.Shakib led Abahani’s bowling surge with returns of 4 for 35, including the wickets of Sabbir, Chand and Mehedi. He was complemented by left-arm spinner Saqlain Sajib who claimed 3 for 37. Shuvagata and Taibur Rahman added 50 for the sixth wicket to help Prime Bank recover from 79 for 4. After both batsmen fell, No.10 Monir Hussain scored a brisk 25 to take his team to 240.Kalabagan Cricket Academy beat Cricket Coaching School by five wickets (D/L method) in a bottom-of-the-table tussle in Fatullah.Having opted to bat, CCS managed only 185 for 9 in 50 overs as no batsman passed 38. As many as five batsmen got starts but none got a substantial score. Captain Mahmudul Hasan led KCA’s superb bowling effort with returns of 3 for 37.Then it was the turn of Jatin Saxena to play a match-winning hand. The Indian batsman struck 87 off 95 balls, including seven fours and three sixes. Jatin was assisted by Mahmudul who made 46 off 84 balls. Rain interrupted KCA’s innings but they reached the revised target of 184 with 53 balls to spare.Left-arm spinners Nasum Ahmed and Saleh Ahmed Shawon took two wickets each for CCS.

Arsenal’s "Exceptional" £120k-p/w Star "Might Be Tempted" To Leave

Arsenal star Granit Xhaka "might be tempted" to leave this summer, particularly if the club bring in a new central midfielder, according to journalist Paul Brown.

What's the latest on Xhaka's Arsenal future?

According to a recent report from talkSPORT, Xhaka is becoming increasingly likely to leave Arsenal in the summer, despite a stellar season in the Premier League, as his contract expires next summer, meaning this is the club's last chance to cash-in.

Mikel Arteta downplayed recent links to Bayer Leverkusen, with the manager insisting he is "really happy" with the midfielder's performances this season, claiming it is "probably the best season" he has had at the club since signing for £30m in 2016.

However, with the Gunners being linked with moves for the likes of Declan Rice and Moises Caicedo, the Switzerland international's future in north London now appears to be in major doubt.

In a recent interview with GiveMeSport, Brown has indicated that the 30-year-old could be keen on a move this summer, if he feels as though his game time is going to be limited by the arrival of a big-name signing.

The journalist said: I feel if Arsenal were to make a big midfield signing and invest a lot of money in a player like Rice or Caicedo, that Xhaka might feel, at this stage of his career, he doesn't want to play second fiddle or lose out on the kind of minutes he was getting this season.

“So, I think there's an opportunity there for clubs like Leverkusen to come in and make him an offer, and depending on the sort of business Arsenal do, I think he might be tempted to take it.”

Should Arsenal let Granit Xhaka leave?

The £120k-per-week midfielder has taken significant strides this season, having averaged a 6.97 WhoScored match rating in the Premier League, a massive increase on the 6.67 match rating from the 2021/22 campaign.

granit-xhaka-arsenal-moussa-diaby

Hailed as "exceptional" by journalist Charles Watts, the former FC Basel man also plays an important role in the dressing room, having been described as a "positive leader" who sets a "positive example for the young players" by Patrick Vieira.

As such, it would be wise for Arteta to keep hold of Xhaka, if he is willing to accept playing a more limited role than he has this season, in which he has made a total of 45 appearances in all competitions.

It will also allow players to focus skills on the white ball game and help more people to understand the structure of the season.”It promises to be a memorable summer of cricket for all our international grounds and a particularly special one for Somerset CCC which will host its first England men’s fixture for more than thirty years; a great opportunity for the county to further capitalise on its strong support for England women’s cricket in recent years.”Edgbaston will once again host NatWest T20 Blast Finals day while the Royal London One-Day Cup Final has been brought forward from its traditional mid-September date to a new mid-summer slot in early July.
