"One of a kind" £180k-a-week Liverpool star fit to start against Man City

Liverpool and Arne Slot have received a major injury boost in the lead-up to their clash with Manchester City this weekend, with a “one of a kind” player passed fit.

Liverpool prepare for huge Man City clash

On Sunday afternoon, the Reds face a game that could arguably be season-defining come the end of the campaign, with City making the trip to Anfield in the Premier League.

Slot’s Liverpool side know that victory over their rivals will take them 11 points clear of City, as well as retaining at least a nine-point advantage over Arsenal, assuming the Gunners win away to West Ham on Saturday evening.

Liverpool head coach Arne Slot

Pep Guardiola’s side are arguably on their worst-ever run of form under the Spaniard, not only losing five games in a row in all competitions recently but also drawing 3-3 at home to Feyenoord in the Champions League on Tuesday night, having led 3-0 in the second half.

Everything points towards a Liverpool win, given the confidence they are playing with, but Slot will be well aware of the huge threat City still pose, not to mention the fact that he has a number of injury concerns heading into the game. However, he has been given a big boost regarding one player.

Liverpool handed big injury boost before Man City

Taking to X, journalist David Lynch confirmed that Liverpool star Trent Alexander-Arnold is “fit” to face Man City this weekend, having sat in on Slot’s pre-match press conference:

This is fantastic news for the Reds, with the 26-year-old not featuring since the 2-0 win at home to Aston Villa before the international break, when he was forced off with a hamstring issue in the first half.

Alexander-Arnold’s return also times in well because Conor Bradley picked up an injury of his own in the 2-0 win over Real Madrid in midweek. The Northern Irishman knows all about the quality of his Liverpool teammate, saying of him last month:

“Everybody knows how good Trent is. He’s one of a kind as a footballer. But my aim is the same as last season – whenever I get a chance to be on the pitch I’m going to do my best to help the team. It’s about winning the games and giving my all. I know I’ve got some decent competition. If I’m training well, hopefully it can push Trent on and that can only be good for the team.”

Assuming Alexander-Arnold, on £180,000-a-week, starts on Sunday, it will be a tough game to be thrown back into, considering his lack of match fitness, so a bit of rustiness could be expected.

ByHenry Jackson Nov 28, 2024

There is the potential for Slot to play Joe Gomez at right-back instead, should he feel that Liverpool’s vice-captain isn’t quite ready, but he seemed confident that he was in his press conference. A big performance from him would go a long way towards the Reds picking up a massive result at Anfield.

Manchester United have had a nightmare journey in the 2024-25 campaign as they find themselves 14th in the Premier League following their 1-1 draw against Arsenal last Sunday. They parted company with Erik ten Hag early in the season and replaced the Dutchman with Amorim, however, the Portuguese coach has not been able to change the club's fortunes, as under his tutelage, the Red Devils have won just 11 out of 26 matches.

AdvertisementWHAT BRUNO FERNANDES SAID

Amid the team's poor run of form, club captain Fernandes has made a surprise admission about his relationship with the ex-Sporting CP boss, as he told : "I wouldn't say we're quite close. We don't speak that much to be honest. He is a manager that is very, very quiet…

"Obviously, being the captain, most of the things he wants to pass to the team, many times come to me, but many other times doesn't even come from him but from his staff. Obviously, we have a good relationship but I wouldn't say that is different than any other player. I knew the things that he was doing at Sporting but it wasn't someone I knew personally."

Amorim's coaching performance has come under scrutiny in recent times, but he has been backed to succeed at Old Trafford by the club's part owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe. The British billionaire has praised Amorim's courage and hailed him as a thoughtful person.

Shamilia Connell discharged from hospital after getting all-clear

“She is in good spirits and thankful for all the well wishes,” CWI says in a statement

ESPNcricinfo staff19-Mar-2022Shamilia Connell, the West Indies quick who collapsed during the game against Bangladesh on Friday and had to be taken to hospital, has been discharged by medical authorities after her “tests returned clear results”, a Cricket West Indies statement said on Saturday.”She was discharged the same evening (Friday),” CWI said. “She is now resting comfortably, under the care and supervision of the CWI Medical Team. She is in good spirits and thankful for all the well wishes.”Connell, who was fielding at midwicket, collapsed on the field in the 47th over of Bangladesh’s chase. Team-mates and medical professionals were by her side immediately, and she was taken to hospital in an ambulance soon after. In a positive sign, she managed to get up and get into the ambulance with a bit of support. The exact nature of her illness wasn’t clear. At that point, the match was on a knife’s edge with Bangladesh’s last-wicket pair trying to eke out the 13 they needed off 19 balls. Play resumed not long after the incident, and Stafanie Taylor sealed a final-over win for her team by picking up the last wicket.”It was sad to see her go down,” Taylor said of Connell at the post-match presentation ceremony. “But we need to look at the bright side – it was time for us to regroup, we came back and changed the momentum.”Connell bowled three wicketless overs in the match, which West Indies won by four runs to jump to third on the points table. Hayley Matthews, Taylor, Afy Fletcher and Shemaine Campbelle played leading roles in the win.West Indies next play Pakistan on Monday, and there is no confirmation yet as to whether Connell will be fit for that game, or whether she will play a part in the remainder of the tournament.

Not-So-Fantastic Five: The New England Revolution, Sporting Kansas City and reigning champs LA Galaxy among MLS' underperformers to begin 2025

GOAL takes a look at five of MLS' most underperforming squads, examining how and why things are going wrong to begin 2025

Three weeks into the MLS season, there are clear frontrunners at the top. The Columbus Crew are unbeaten, as Wilfried Nancy's men continue to impress, while Inter Miami joins them among the East elite. The Vancouver Whitecaps and Philadelphia Union, however, are the only teams to win their opening three games of the season as both unexpectedly surge.

Opposite, at the bottom of the standings though, three teams sit without a point: Sporting Kansas City, CF Montreal, and… reigning champions, LA Galaxy. Two others, the New England Revolution and the Portland Timbers, are struggling mightily as well.

All five teams, in their own way, were looking to build off positive momentum from the 2025 offseason. So far though, it's been nothing short of woeful, and they've become the Not-So-Fantastic Five.

GOAL examines how and why this group of clubs, in particular, is struggling to begin the campaign.

Get the MLS Season Pass today!Stream games nowGetty Images SportLA Galaxy

The Galaxy, 2024 MLS Cup champions, are officially off to the worst start to an MLS season by any reigning champion in league history. Three losses through three matches with a negative-6 goal-differential, LA has struggled mightily in all aspects of the game to start the campaign in unexpected fashion.

However, is it that shocking? Yes, it is – but looking big picture – there are understandable reasons why things don't appear the same on the pitch.
They're without the key centerpiece of their midfield in midfielder Riqui Puig, who is sidelined with an ACL tear, and star winger Joseph Paintsil – who is dealing with a calf injury to begin the season. Then, they lost their leading goalscorer Dejan Joveljic to Sporting Kansas City this offseason after the Serbia international departed for a reported $4M fee. That's three key members of the attack alone.

In fact, their MLS Cup winning XI from December and their opening day XI in 2025 had five different faces representing the Galaxy – signaling significant changes.

Manager Greg Vanney has his hands full to turn their form around, but it's still very early in the season, and there are truly no doubts that the Galaxy will find their way back into the competitive mix in the Western Conference. The one positive LA has going for them is they turned around a 1-0 deficit in the CONCACAF Champions Cup to Herediano, defeating the Costa Rican side 4-1 in leg two to advance to the quarterfinal of the competition.

Matchday 4 presents them with a favorable matchup against the Timbers as well. The likes of Marco Reus and Gabriel Pec, if they trust each other and those around them, could finally unleash their attacking prowess and get their first points of the season.

AdvertisementIMAGNPortland Timbers

Phil Neville’s Timbers are off to a rough start, sitting at 1-2 through the opening three matches. Their lone win came on Matchday 2, a late 89th-minute free kick from David Da Costa that secured a victory over Austin. The strike was more fluke than precision, but three points are three points. Still, it doesn’t change the troubling trajectory the club is on.

They opened the season with a humbling 4-1 loss to the Whitecaps and followed it with a 2-0 shutout defeat to Nashville SC on Matchday 3 – both marked by the same glaring issue: poor defending.

The backline collapsed against Vancouver, conceding four avoidable goals after veteran centerback Kamal Miller was sent off just 11 minutes into the match. Against Austin – a struggling side in their own right – Portland’s defense showed some improvement but was rarely tested. Any progress, however, was undone in Nashville.

The Timbers gave away two penalty kicks within the opening 18 minutes, but goalkeeper James Pantemis bailed them out with two stunning saves. His reward? His defenders collapsed twice — conceding in first-half stoppage time and again midway through the second half in a 2-0 loss.

Neville has every right to be frustrated with his defense’s shaky start, but ultimately, it’s his responsibility to fix it. Questions about Portland’s lack of defensive reinforcements in the offseason are already looming over Neville and the club’s decision-makers. But regardless of the roster, the Timbers’ backline hasn’t even reached the basic standard expected in MLS so far in 2025.

New England Revolution

The Revs were arguably MLS' most shocking performers in 2024. They brought in a former MLS Cup-winning manager in Caleb Porter, some high-profile signings, and expected to return back to the top of the East. Instead, it was a disaster – from Porter feuding with players and media alike – to his roster critically underperforming. Despite a 14th place in the East, he returned in 2025 and completely overhauled the roster seeing more than 11 players depart the club over the offseason. In terms of incomings, they spent an MLS record GAM fee of $2.5M on Leonardo Campana and brought in a handful of MLS veterans to surround him with. The result?

One point through three matches courtesy of a 0-0 draw with Nashville SC. Since? They've been shut out two times, a shocking return on investment in their attack.

"I think just overall we need to stick to our process, and we need to stay in our reality. Our reality is an honest one, it's an objective one. It's a reality where we look at everything and look at the film, and we understand the good and we understand what needs to improve. So, I think that's really important and that gives us perspective on where we're at. We're three games into a season, and we have a bunch of new players. We need time," Porter shared with the media after their Matchday 3 loss to the Philadelphia Union.

Apple TV's Taylor Twellman said it best: New England needs Porter to be better.

Sporting missed the postseason in 2024 and have opened 2025 winless in five matches across all competitions, without a single point to their name. In MLS play, they've now suffered 10 straight losses dating back to the 2024 regular season. It’s been nothing short of a disaster for the Western Conference side, with underperformance across every part of the pitch.

MLS’s new documentary series pulled back the curtain on Sporting’s struggles, with the club’s ownership openly discussing the possibility of firing Peter Vermes in the offseason. Vermes himself admitted that it would have been a fair decision – but also explained why sticking with him made sense. In the end, Vermes, who has been with the club since before its 2010 rebrand to Sporting KC, is now tasked with steering the ship back on course.

So far, though, there’s little reason for optimism.

The big-money signing of Dejan Joveljic was supposed to be a turning point, but Sporting has struggled to build the right supporting cast around him. New Designated Player Manu Garcia has shown flashes of quality, but he’s still adjusting to the physicality and pace of MLS.

Defensively, it’s been even worse. USMNT prospect Jake Davis has been forced to play at right back despite his natural position being in midfield. Meanwhile, centerbacks Joaquin Fernandez, Danny Rosero, and Robert Voloder have failed to show they are MLS-caliber options. Individual mistakes have piled up, repeatedly letting down Vermes and the squad.

Ultimately, it’s up to Vermes and Sporting’s ownership to decide if this group of players has what it takes to compete in MLS. If not, Sporting could be headed for another forgettable season – and Vermes could be out of a job for the first time in 16 years.

Everton must regret selling talent who’s now a bit like Haaland & Osimhen

Everton fans were permitted to glance through the looking glass on Wednesday evening, glimpsing a level of attacking authority that has scarcely been on show under Sean Dyche in the Premier League.

While Wolverhampton Wanderers were put to the sword in a 4-0 defeat at Goodison Park, Everton fans will be concerned that the match was just an outlier.

Orel Mangala

After such uninspiring results across the majority of the 2024/25 campaign, fans will understandably be worried that the excellent win proves to be nothing more than a flash in the pan, though the weekend fixture against Liverpool at Goodison Park stands as an opportunity to take their campaign to another, exultant level.

It’s an interesting hint of potential riches within this Toffees squad, but more is needed to cement attacking success. Change, for sure, is needed at number nine.

Everton need a new striker

Everton enjoyed a statement victory over Wolves, but Dominic Calvert-Lewin still failed to break his duck. The 27-year-old has now gone nine matches in the Premier League without a goal or an assist.

Everton striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin

Admittedly, he showcased some of his qualities, winning five duels and holding up play neatly, but missed a great opportunity to score and looks like a shadow of the man who had been created into a “monster” under Carlo Ancelotti, as talent scout Jacek Kulig put it.

Armando Broja made his debut against Wolves, playing out the final few minutes. The Albania international has been sidelined with an injury after joining the Merseysiders on loan this summer. Everton have the option to make the move permanent at the end of the term.

Broja could be a solution in the years to come, but he’s suffered injuries throughout his young career and must not be overworked. There’s also Beto to consider. The hulking striker has enjoyed moments of promise this season but continues to play second fiddle under Dyche’s wing, and perhaps lacks the bite needed for a regular starting berth in the Premier League.

In any case, the victory over Wolves eased the goalscoring woes considerably, but Everton still lack a steady stream of firepower.

It’s a shame that they didn’t realise the qualities of Moise Kean, who would go right into the starting line-up were he under Dyche’s wing now.

Why Everton got rid of Moise Kean

Kean alighted in Merseyside with a weight of expectation back in 2019, signing from Juventus for a £25m fee. He was only 19 but had made an impression in his maiden days, scoring eight goals for the Old Lady and bagging twice over just three Italy caps.

With just four goals across 39 matches for Everton and a red card besides, Kean failed to make the grade but frankly suffered some stepping into a new country as a teenager, unable to find his feet and develop his confidence.

The whole ordeal was mitigated through Farhad Moshiri managing to engineer a £25m sale back to Juventus, meaning that the financial loss was alleviated considerably.

But Everton still failed to enjoy the quality of a talented young star who has since demonstrated that he does possess the skillset to thrive at the highest level. Further to that point, he still cost the Goodison Park side some £49k per week across the duration of his stay.

Even though the financial loss was minimised, it’s frustrating to watch him thrive at present.

Moise Kean's performances in 2024/25

To put it succinctly: Kean has been one of the most potent forces in Europe this season, scoring 13 goals from 16 appearances across all competitions.

His sharp scoring sense has indeed made him one of Italy’s most clinical forwards, Atalanta’s Mateo Retegui the only player in the division to have scored more goals (12) than him thus far this season.

Last season, journalist Carlo Garganese commented that the Italian’s “strength is scary” and that his “movement & dribbling has come on so much,” albeit lacking in end product.

Moise Kean in action for Fiorentina

No longer. As per FBref, the 23-year-old ranks among the top 7% of centre-forwards across Europe’s top five leagues over the past year for goals scored and the top 5% for successful take-ons per 90.

His goalscoring successes have even pulled comparisons against some of Europe’s finest marksmen, namely, Erling Haaland and Victor Osimhen.

Haaland is one of the greatest goalscorers that the Premier League has ever seen, while Osimhen supercharged Napoli’s Scudetto-winning season of 2022/23 and is now out on loan with Galatasaray after a transfer fiasco in the summer.

FBref indeed records the prolific pairing as among Kean’s most statistically similar players, denoting the La Viola man’s wonderful skillset.

Moise Kean graphic

Hailed for his “fearless” approach by new Three Lions boss Thomas Tuchel, it’s frustrating to think that Everton had such a talent in their brood, and failed to make the most of his budding talent.

One thing’s for certain: neither Calvert-Lewin nor Beto carry even a semblance of the likes of Osimhen and Haaland in regard to their goalscoring threat right now. Had things been different, Kean truly could have proved to be their very own version.

'Might be chasing 180 instead of 270' – Bangladesh upset with umpiring decisions in Durban Test

“I have seen such inconsistency in umpiring after a long time,” team director Khaled Mahmud says

ESPNcricinfo staff03-Apr-2022Bangladesh team director Khaled Mahmud called the umpiring in the Durban Test “inconsistent”, adding that Bangladesh could have been “chasing 180 instead of 270” had the decisions gone their way.Following Shakib Al Hasan’s tweet, which called for the ICC to reinstate neutral umpires – home-side umpires have been officiating since the Covid-19 pandemic began – Bangladesh selector Habibul Bashar also joined the criticism chorus, pointing out that many umpiring decisions over the course of the game had not gone in their favour.Related

Bangladesh lose three in quick time in 274-run chase

Bangladesh made lbw appeals on multiple occasions during South Africa’s second innings, especially in the first two sessions. They opted for a review when Dean Elgar was given not out on the field by umpire Marais Erasmus in the fifth over after being hit on his back leg. But he survived on umpire’s call as ball-tracking showed that the ball was only clipping off stump. Then, in the 19th over of the innings, Bangladesh successfully overturned Adrian Holdstock’s not-out decision for an lbw against Sarel Erwee. According to ESPNcricinfo’s ball-by-ball commentary, it “looked so out to the naked eye and it was a surprise that the on-field call was not given despite a screeching appeal”.In the 26th over, Khaled Ahmed was denied an lbw decision against Keegan Petersen. Bangladesh didn’t take that review but replays showed that it would have hit the stumps and would have been out had the review been taken.”There was no hiding from the [poor] umpiring in today’s play,” Mahmud said. “A number of decisions went against us. We also missed out on a wicket when the boys seemed scared of taking a review. If we got those decisions, we might be chasing 180 instead of 270. To be really honest, I have seen such inconsistency in umpiring after a long time. But the umpires are the best judge on the field. We have to accept the decisions.”Shakib, currently not with the team because of personal reasons, had tweeted during the match saying that ICC should bring back neutral umpires since the Covid-19 situation had improved in many cricket-playing countries.

“I totally agree with Shakib,” Bashar said. “Since Covid protocols are all but over, we should go back to neutral umpires. Umpires make mistakes but definitely neutral umpires ensure everyone gets the advantage. We have seen that on and off in this series. The DRS is certainly helpful but the umpire’s call isn’t really going in our favour.”When you have a neutral umpire in the middle, even if he makes a mistake, you don’t think it is deliberate. We have seen many decisions in this series which could have gone our way, but didn’t.”

King unbeaten 91 and Hosein's four-for seal series for West Indies

Visitors overcome top-order wobble to beat Netherlands 2-0 in three-match series

Ashish Pant02-Jun-2022West Indies 217 for 5 (King 91*, Carty 43*, de Leede 2-46) beat Netherlands 214 (Edwards 68, O’Dowd 51, Hosein 4-39) by five wicketsBrandon King and Keacy Carty’s career-best efforts of 91 not out and 43 not out, respectively, in an unbeaten 118-run stand for the sixth wicket, rescued West Indies from 99 for 5 and led them to a series win against Netherlands in Amstelveen. King backed up his unbeaten 51-ball 58* from the first ODI with another half-century, and found excellent company in Carty as the duo chased down a target of 215 with five wickets in hand.West Indies would have hoped for a much easier chase after Akeal Hosein’s career-best 4 for 39 helped bring about a Netherlands collapse of 10 for 113. However, fast bowlers Logan van Beek and Bas de Leede fashioned a collapse of their own to threaten an upset in the second ODI.King and Carty, though, resurrected the chase well. While King was more adventurous in his shot-making, Carty, playing just his second ODI, took his time to settle in before opening up his shoulders as the visitors eventually cruised home with 27 balls to spare.Earlier, opting to bat first, Netherlands openers Vikramjit Singh and Max O’Dowd laid a solid platform in a 101-run opening stand. Both batters went toe-to-toe with each other in their run-making. Vikramjit got the boundary counter running for the hosts as he ramped Alzarri Joseph over the slip cordon in the fourth over before driving the same bowler through mid-off. O’Dowd, initially sedate, picked Kyle Mayers through the backward square leg region for a four and then drove him down the ground in his next over. It didn’t help that West Indies dropped both openers thrice inside the first 15 overs as Netherlands kept a steady run-rate going.Netherlands brought up their 100 in the 21st over, but it all went downhill for them thereon. As was the case in the first ODI, the spinners, Hayden Walsh and Hosein, brought about their downfall. Vikramjit was the first to depart when he pushed an innocuous, tossed-up ball straight back at Hosein for 46. While O’Dowd reached his fourth ODI half-century, he was soon undone by a short-of-a-length Hosein delivery that crept very low to bowl him. With both set batters dismissed, Netherlands lost their way. Hosein sent back de Leede for 0 before Nkrumah Bonner claimed Musa Ahmed for 7. Hosein then claimed his fourth wicket, getting rid of Teja Nidamanuru for 4, with Netherlands suddenly finding themselves 159 for 5.Scott Edwards, batting at No. 3, did his best to take his side to a respectable total but did not get much support. He struck 68 off 89 balls and was the last wicket to fall as the hosts failed to bat out their 50 overs. For West Indies, Hosein was the pick of the bowlers, while Joseph picked up two wickets at the end.West Indies’ chase got off on the wrong foot with Shamarh Brooks and Shai Hope falling inside the first ten overs. While van Beek had Brooks caught at first slip for 6, de Leede left Hope’s stumps in a mess with a stunning in-dipper for 18. de Leede then struck again, trapping Bonner for 15, while Nicholas Pooran dragged Aryan Dutt back onto his stumps, having hit him for a six a few deliveries earlier.King and Mayers forged a bit of a fightback for the visitors, but once the latter fell on 22, with the team score on 99, Netherlands would have a sniffed an upset. King, though, made sure he did not lose focus. At no stage did he let the Netherlands bowlers bowl too many dot balls, and even when Carty failed to rotate the strike, King kept the boundaries flowing. Netherlands fluffed a couple of run-out attempts, but apart from that, there was little the two West Indies batters offered in terms of chances.King, who smashed nine fours and three sixes during his knock, was named Player of the Match for his effort.

It’s been an extremely testing few weeks for Lopetegui, who’s faced serious scrutiny in parts, and West Ham’s head coach will be internally mourning the loss of his dear departed as he also seeks to resurrect his side’s run of form in the top flight.

In some more positive news for the tactician, club insider ExWHUemployee has shared that his players are starting to buy into Lopetegui’s methodology – as they all slowly begin to get behind the 58-year-old.

“There is a real growing sense at the club now that the players as a collective are starting to believe in Lopetegui and his team,” stated Ex (via West Ham Way).

“Its not been a great start to life for the Head Coach, but we understand that the players are really buying into his system and are supporting him in wanting to make it a success.

“This belief within the squad appears to be evident on recent performances, although not perfect, but there are clear signs of improvement as we look to build on some positive results of late.”

Lopetegui is also set to make a few key decisions ahead of the winter transfer window. Summer signing Guido Rodriguez has been linked with an unceremonious January exit from West Ham, just months after his arrival from Real Betis on a free transfer.

Julen Lopetegui demotes Guido Rodriguez to "bit-part" West Ham role

According to insider Claret & Hugh, that potential departure is now gaining traction. It is believed Lopetegui now sees Rodriguez as a “bit-part” West Ham player, and the Argentine could leave next month in an effort to re-establish himself elsewhere.

West Ham midfielder Guido Rodriguez

“He [Rodriguez] had a small injury for the Bournemouth game,” said a club source to C&H.

“But the manager only sees him as a bit-part player now.”

The 30-year-old is said to be openly seeking a return to Betis, who are also interested in re-signing their former player mid-season, so his switch back to La Liga could be something to seriously watch out for.

Called a “top-quality” player by Terry Gibson, Rodriguez’s move to West Ham hasn’t exactly worked out as most would’ve hoped.

India head coach Rahul Dravid has backed Rishabh Pant, saying he remains “an integral part” of the side, despite the wicketkeeper-batter managing only 58 runs at a strike rate of 105.45 in the five T20Is against South Africa.Coming into this series, Pant had scored 340 runs at an average of 30.90 in IPL 2022. His strike rate at the tournament was 151.78, significantly higher than that in the last two editions – 113.95 in 2020 and 128.52 in 2021. Dravid said the team is expecting him to play a similar attacking role at the international level as well.”When you’re asking people to play a slightly more attacking brand of cricket in the middle overs and to take the game on a little bit more, sometimes it’s hard to judge based on two or three games,” Dravid said after the washed-out fifth T20I in Bengaluru.Related

“I thought he had a pretty good IPL. He might not have looked good on the averages, but his strike rate was really good. He looked to move that up a little bit – to where he was probably three years ago. We’re going to hope that we can get those kinds of numbers from him at the international level as well. In that process, he might go wrong in a few games.”But he remains an integral part of our batting line-up. We know what he does with the power he has. The fact that he is a left-hander is very important to us as well in the middle overs. And he has played some good knocks. Of course, personally, he would have liked to have scored a few more runs but it’s not that concerning. For us, he is certainly a very big part of our plans going ahead in the next few months.”2:10

Dinesh Karthik, meanwhile, continues to impress in the niche role as a strictly final-five overs batter. In the fourth T20I in Rajkot, Karthik had smashed a 27-ball 55, the sort of knock that, Dravid said, “certainly makes you start”. Karthik and Hardik Pandya, who hit 46 off 31 deliveries, had added 65 off 33 balls to lift India to 169, which proved to be a winning total.”He was picked for a very specific skill,” Dravid said of Karthik. “And it’s nice when that’s kind of indicated in a sense that it came together brilliantly for us in the Rajkot game, where we needed that big performance in the last five overs to be able to make a par score. He and Hardik [Pandya] batted beautifully for us; both of them are our enforcers at the end, guys who can capitalise on those last five-six overs.”They are probably two of the best in the world in those last five-six overs. So, yeah, it was really nice to see Karthik come off and do what he has been picked to do. It certainly opens up a lot more options for us going forward. Innings like that certainly make you start. Like I was telling the guys it’s not about knocking the door – you have to start banging the door down, and an innings like that certainly means he is knocking very hard.”

“Shreyas, in the early part [of the series] on tricky wickets, showed intent and played positively. Ruturaj showed in one particular innings [in the third T20I] what quality and skill he has got.”India coach Rahul Dravid

With Rohit Sharma, KL Rahul and Virat Kohli not part of the series, there was a chance for fringe players to present their cases. Ishan Kishan scored 206 runs – by far the most in the series – at a strike rate of 150.36, but Ruturaj Gaikwad and Shreyas Iyer failed to impress. Gaikwad tallied only 96 runs in five innings at a strike rate 131.50, and Iyer 94 runs at 123.68. But Dravid isn’t disappointed with them.”We’re not going to make knee-jerk reactions,” he said. “As you have seen, I don’t like judging people after one series, or one game. Every one of the guys who got the opportunity here truly deserved the opportunity; they have earned it. And in this format of the game, you’re going to have some good games and some bad games.”I think Shreyas, in the early part [of the series] on a couple of tricky wickets, showed a lot of intent and played really positively for us. Ruturaj showed in one particular innings [in the third T20I] what quality and skill he has got.”In Twenty20, you can have the odd games [where] your form and performance goes up and down a little bit. So we are not very disappointed with anyone. As a group, we were looking to play a slightly more positive and attacking brand of cricket right from the beginning. And we knew you when you’re trying to do that, it’s not always going to come off. But what we are certainly clear about the kind of cricket we want to play.”
