Suggestion Spurs are publicly interested in Everton’s Jarrad Branthwaite

A pundit believes that Tottenham are "making it known" they want to sign an up and coming English defender for manager Ange Postecoglou this summer.

Postecoglou admits to wanting new centre-back at Spurs

Back in March, Postecoglou admitted that Spurs will be targeting a new centre-back, despite already bringing in Radu Dragusin to the tune of £25 million in January.

Dragusin joins a defensive contingent of Cristian Romero and Micky van de Ven at the heart of Postecoglou's defence already, meaning another signing would take the number of star senior central defenders at Spurs to four.

Despite this, Postecoglou claimed that work has already begun on potentially bringing in another centre-back, as well as reinforcing other areas of the pitch.

"If you’re saying, ‘Is it an area we can strengthen?’, yes it’s an area we will probably look at”, Postecoglou on signing another defender.

“With all these things, it’s about trying to strengthen the group as much as anything else. If you think about when I first arrived, we had maybe six or seven centre-backs at the club. So it’s not just numbers. It’s more about the ability of those players to play the football we want and to fit in to what we’re trying to build here.

“I think it is an area of the park we will look to strengthen, but I think we’ll look to strengthen all areas of the park come the end of the season. That is planning that’s already underway, and other people are in charge of it at the moment.”

In terms of the named targets, Bournemouth's Lloyd Kelly has attracted Spurs interest, and it is believed Tottenham made an offer to Fulham defender Tosin Adarabioyo. This would make sense, as both would be cost-effective given their soon-to-be free agent status.

Lloyd Kelly in action for Bournemouth in the Premier League.

However, a much more marquee option to be sporadically mentioned comes in the form of Everton starlet Jarrad Branthwaite. After an exceptional season at Goodison Park, the Englishman has been named in Gareth Southgate's provisional squad for Euro 2024, with the Toffees valuing him at around £80 million.

Pundit says Tottenham are making it known they want Branthwaite

Speaking to Tottenham News, pundit John Wenham has shared his belief that Tottenham are "making it known" they want to sign Branthwaite – but admits that there are a few roadblocks in Spurs' way of a potential deal.

“Tottenham are clearly making it known that they are interested,” Wenham said.

“However, I can’t see that deal happening. Central defence is probably where we have our strongest options, whereas United are lacking quality in that position. It would make more sense for Branthwaite to go to Old Trafford, and with the figures that are being brandished, I think United are more likely to sign him.”

Crystal Palace could land Eze replacement in PL ace who’s a "joy to watch"

Crystal Palace became one of the most entertaining teams to watch anywhere in the country towards the end of the Premier League season this year, scoring for fun and punishing the 'big six' home and away.

Under new boss Oliver Glasner, the South Londoners looked as if they would have reached the European places if the season hadn't come to an end, and while the Austrian deserves plenty of credit, his ideas were executed by a squad full of brilliant talents.

Players like Adam Wharton, Michael Olise, and Eberechi Eze have been spectacular under the former Eintracht Frankfurt boss, although their impressive performances have led to stories about their potential departure, especially in the latter's case.

That said, if the Eagles do lose the former Queens Park Rangers star this summer, they could quickly replace him with another serious talent, according to recent murmurings.

Crystal Palace transfer news

According to reports from Spain earlier this week, Crystal Palace are one of several clubs interested in signing Arsenal's highly regarded midfielder Emile Smith Rowe.

Emile Smith Rowe playing for Arsenal

Alongside Palace, the story names Wolverhampton Wanderers, Aston Villa, Everton and Nottingham Forest as the teams keen to land the Englishman.

While this extra competition is far from ideal, the good news is that the story claims the Hale End graduate is available for as little as €25m, which converts to just £21m.

kalvin-phillips-emile-smith-rowe-west-ham-opinion

It might be a challenging transfer to get over the line, but if the South Londoners are set to lose Eze in the summer, they could do a lot worse than replacing him with the Gunners ace.

How Smith Rowe compares to Eze

Now, it's not really possible to compare Smith Rowe to Eze this season, nor is it really fair, as a couple of years' worth of injuries have seen him lose his place in the Arsenal team, meaning he's played just 474 minutes of first-team football this season – in which he's provided two assists – while the Palace man has played 2284 minutes.

Arsenal midfielder Emile Smith Rowe.

However, as the Eagles' dynamic midfielder has enjoyed his best season at Selhurst Park this year, we can compare that to the Gunners ace's best season in red and white, which came back in 2021/22.

During that campaign, the "special talent," as Jamie Carragher described him, scored 11 goals and provided two assists in just 2176 first-team minutes. This means he managed to maintain an average of a goal involvement every 167 minutes, which is genuinely impressive for someone who was 21 years old at the time.

In comparison, the Eagles' Greenwich-born star scored 11 goals and provided six assists in 2284 minutes this season, giving him a slightly better average of a goal involvement every 134 minutes – but he's four years older.

Moreover, they're pretty close again when comparing some of the Croydon-born gem's underlying numbers from that season to Eze's from this year.

Ultimately, if Glasner is set to lose Eze in the summer, signing Smith Rowe for £21m as a replacement wouldn't be the worst idea. In fact, it might be a rather good one.

He hasn't been able to play a full season of football for some time, but the last time he did, he was a "joy to watch", per Mikel Arteta, and if there is anyone who could bring that joy back out of him, it's the Austrian who has already transformed Selhurst Park this year.

CSA appoints Beresford Williams as acting president after Chris Nenzani's resignation

A more permanent appointment is expected at the board’s annual general meeting on September 5

ESPNcricinfo staff18-Aug-2020Cricket South Africa (CSA) has appointed Beresford Williams as acting president of the board following the resignation of Chris Nenzani on Saturday, with a more long-term appointment expected when the board’s annual general meeting is conducted on September 5.The decision came a day after Dr Jacques Faul resigned as acting CEO of the board, not long after the organisation revealed that Nenzani had stepped down from his position over the weekend and COO Naasei Appiah had been fired. Faul, who was seconded from the Titans in December 2019, was due to return to his role with the franchise on September 15, but opted to leave his post four weeks early. While Faul was not available for comment on Monday evening, ESPNcricinfo understands that he chose to leave his post following a heated board meeting in which his position became untenable. An acting CEO is expected to be named imminently, with Appiah, who is fighting his dismissal in court, making himself “available” on a radio show minutes after news of Faul’s resignation was made public. Company secretary Welsh Gwaza, who was at the board meeting and was unable to divulge any information, is one of the names being mentioned for the acting role.In a statement, CSA said: “Dr Faul has put in place a detail transitional plan that will ensure the organisation makes a seamless transition to a new Acting CEO, that the Board will advise on shortly. The Board is for ever grateful for the outstanding commitment and leadership that Dr Faul has made and continues to make to CSA and the game of cricket.”Nenzani stepped down three weeks before his term was due to end, following increasing pressure in the face of administrative upheaval.A CSA statement, issued on Monday morning, gave no reason for Nenzani’s exit, and thanked him for his time in office. “Mr Nenzani has provided valuable leadership, insight, assistance and direction in advancing the game of cricket with a focus on achieving transformation and access for the majority of the South African population,” the statement read. Not everyone feels that’s enough, though. “Given what has happened over the last nine months, the president owes stakeholders an explanation for why he is stepping down now,” Andrew Breetzke, SACA CEO, told ESPNcricinfo.Nenzani had been in the position since 2013 and served two three-year terms, the second of which was extended through a change in CSA’s constitution in 2019. That gave Nenzani an additional 12 months, to see CSA through a difficult period. But he has since said he regretted staying on.

'Pep Guardiola has ruined football' – Tim Howard says Mauricio Pochettino cannot follow Man City's blueprint with USMNT

Mauricio Pochettino has been warned against trying to follow Manchester City’s blueprint with the USMNT, as Pep Guardiola “has ruined football”.

Argentine coach handed international postPredecessor tried to be too expansiveUrged to replicate model used at TottenhamFollow GOAL on WhatsApp! 🟢📱WHAT HAPPENED?

That is the opinion of former United States international Tim Howard – who spent time in the Premier League as a player with Manchester United and Everton. He is now keeping a close eye on international matters as ex-Tottenham, Chelsea and Paris Saint-Germain boss Pochettino prepares to take the USMNT reins.

AdvertisementGettyTHE BIGGER PICTURE

He is inheriting a squad that flopped at the 2024 Copa America under Gregg Berhalter, with a disappointing showing on home soil put in at that event. There is plenty of potential at Pochettino’s disposal – including the likes of Christian Pulisic, Weston McKennie and Gio Reyna – but he needs to find a way of bringing the best out of an exciting generation.

WHAT HOWARD SAID

Howard has urged Pochettino to avoid being lured into a ‘tiki taka’ trap, telling the podcast: “What Gregg Berhalter did was — you look back at my generation, we were just a bunch of tough, rugged guys. We had a couple of match-winners. He got this team to believe they could compete and be expansive and play well in the forward areas. I think what happened was in all ways, Pep Guardiola has ruined football. Pep Guardiola has taught everybody that they can play expansive football. They can’t. Not everybody can do it, three teams in the world can do it really well.”

GettyDID YOU KNOW?

Instead of following Guardiola’s lead, Howard wants to see the USMNT class of 2024 cut from the same cloth as Pochettino’s Spurs team that made the Champions League final in 2019. The legendary former goalkeeper added: “I think you have to be resolute at times. And when you look at Pochettino's best teams, on his Tottenham teams it was two banks of four plus two at the top. And then when they broke, they broke with four players. Ultimately, they were rock-solid defensively, or at least tried to be. And so I think if [Pochettino] starts to instil that resoluteness defensively, the [USMNT] has enough players in the forward areas where they can be dangerous.”

Fabrizio Romano – Tottenham now in advanced talks to sell £20 million star

Tottenham Hotspur are now in advancing talks to sell a £20 million member of Ange Postecoglou's squad this summer, and Fabrizio Romano says Spurs really want to conclude this deal.

Postecoglou and the wider Spurs recruitment team are said to be planning a real overhaul in the next few weeks.

Bryan Gil, Giovani Lo Celso, Troy Parrott, Joe Rodon, Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, Richarlison, Tanguy Ndombele, Sergio Reguilon, Yves Bissouma, Emerson Royal and Manor Solomon all come as players who Spurs could reportedly sell, with the Lilywhites apparently open to offers for more than a dozen members of Postecoglou's squad (Paul O'Keefe).

The Tottenham manager has suggested that a few players may well be moved on during this summer window as well. The Australian, speaking to members of the press recently, said Spurs need to implement change as he looks to transform the team.

"We need change. Change has to happen," said Postecoglou on the summer transfer window.

"You can’t want to alter your course and expect the same people are going to be on that. It’s just not going to happen. We’ve had two windows and we’ve had some development of players, for sure, but when I say we’ve still got a long way to go, that’s what I’m talking about.

"It’s impossible to say you’re going to have drastic change and yet expect everyone to be on that journey."

A player who has really struggled since joining Tottenham for £20 million is right-back Djed Spence, after arriving at N17 with a growing reputation and plenty of promise.

The Englishman spent last season on two loan spells. He played the first half of 23/24 at Leeds United, but the Whites cut short his temporary spell, prompting Tottenham to agree a loan deal with Genoa for the second half of last campaign.

Tottenham in advancing talks with Genoa to sell Spence

According to the reliable transfer journalist, Tottenham are in advancing talks over selling Spence to Genoa – and it is a deal they want to happen.

"Genoa keep advancing in talks with Tottenham to sign Djed Spence on permanent transfer after successful loan spell," wrote Romano, via X.

"Negotiations continue with all parties keen on reaching an agreement in June. Genoa also approached OM to keep Vitinha, but only on loan."

The 23-year-old would depart north London after just two years, only making a handful of senior appearances, with neither Antonio Conte nor Postecoglou giving him an opportunity.

Shubman Gill guides KKR to win, following impressive bowling show

Handy 42 not out from Eoin Morgan as well, to get KKR off the mark in IPL 2020

Manjrekar: Shubman Gill completely dominated Rashid Khan

Kolkata Knight Riders 145 for 3 (Gill 70*, Morgan 42*) beat Sunrisers Hyderabad 142 for 4 (Pandey 51, Russell 1-16, Cummins 1-19, Chakravarthy 1-25) by seven wicketsThe Kolkata Knight Riders bounced back from their comprehensive defeat to the Mumbai Indians to ease past the Sunrisers Hyderabad by seven wickets on the back of an impressive performance from their varied bowling attack, which restricted the Sunrisers to 142 for 4. That was followed by a knock of 70 from Shubman Gill to anchor the chase, and there was also a valuable contribution of 42 from Eoin Morgan, in an unbeaten 92-run partnership with Gill. After eight matches in the tournament, it was only the second time that a chasing side clinched victory. The Sunrisers, however, had won the toss and opted to bat first – the first side so far to do that. However, that also meant that it was the seventh game in a row where the team winning the toss lost the match. The Sunrisers are now the only team to remain winless in IPL 2020.Cummins, Chakravarthy show the way with the ballWith the Sunrisers’ best batsmen at the top of the order, the Knight Riders captain opted for an experienced new-ball pair, unlike in the game against Mumbai. Sunil Narine and Pat Cummins – who conceded 49 runs in three overs in his first match – bowled tight lines against David Warner and Jonny Bairstow, not allowing the two batsmen to assert their dominance.Bairstow survived on the review in the fourth over after umpire Chris Gaffaney thought he had edged an attempted paddle off Cummins into the hands of Dinesh Karthik. The next ball, though, he was bowled trying drive a good-length ball that was coming in, out for 5 off 10.Warner and Manish Pandey then consolidated, seeing out the rest of the powerplay, before Warner, then on 36, was caught and bowled in the tenth over, chipping one that went straight on from mystery spinner Varun Chakravarthy – playing his first game for the Knight Riders – back to the bowler.Wriddhiman Saha, also playing his first game of the season, joined Pandey at No. 4, and although they batted for the next eight overs, the boundaries were few and far in between. Pandey looked to accelerate and struck three fours and two sixes in his innings of 51, but was caught and bowled by Andre Russell in the 18th over after getting into a bit of a tangle with a full toss – he seemed to be shaping to ramp, then seemingly tried to adjust to the line and flick it on to the leg side, but only managed to lob it back to the bowler – ending a 62-run stand that came in 51 legal balls.Mohammad Nabi hit two fours in the death overs and Saha was then run-out in the 20th for a 31-ball 30, but having conceded just 24 runs in their final three overs, the Knight Riders restricted the to 142 for 4, the third-lowest IPL total for any team that has lost four or fewer wickets in the last six seasons. Cummins conceded just 19 runs in his four overs as the Knight Riders used seven different bowlers – their premier wristspinner Kuldeep Yadav delivered just two overs.Gill, Morgan ease KKR’s nerves after early stutterThe Sunrisers’ left-arm pacers Khaleel Ahmed and T Natarajan struck early in the chase, dismissing Sunil Narine for a duck and then Nitish Rana (for a 13-ball 26) to reduce the Knight Riders to 43 for 2 in the fifth over. That soon became 53 for 3 when Dinesh Karthik was lbw to Rashid Khan. But, at the other end, Gill was comfortable in the middle, standing tall to cut the balls from the left-armers that angled across, or punch ones that were under his eyes. He saw off the inswingers that Bhuvneshwar Kumar bowled and held his own as three wickets fell at the other end.ALSO SEE: Kolkata Knight Riders vs Sunrisers Hyderabad live score 26th September 2020 When Morgan came in at No. 5, the England captain took to sweeping Rashid, surviving a few lbw counts but seemed to grow in confidence thereafter. Gill and Morgan rotated the strike in the middle overs, and Gill got his first fifty of the season by slicing a cut past point for four in the 13th over. Together the pair saw off the rest of Rashid’s spell, and then a tricky few overs from allrounder Mohammad Nabi, but as the Knight Riders inched closer to the target, Morgan produced some big shots. He ended the 15th over by hitting Bhuvneshwar over cover for a six, then finished Rashid’s spell with a crunch through deep midwicket and, with eight to win, sealed the game by clattering Natarajan for a six over long-on and then a four past the bowler. He finished on 42 off 29 balls, while Player-of-the-Match Gill was unbeaten on a 62-ball 70.

Once tipped for stardom, injuries did not help Jese, who struggled to assert himself as a regular starter at Real Madrid behind the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo, Karim Benzema and Gareth Bale. Paris Saint-Germain took a chance on the forward in 2016 and paid €25 million (£21m/$27.5m) for his services. However, Jese was out of favour under Unai Emery in the French capital, struggling for minutes and making just 12 appearances for the club. A series of loan spells and subsequent club hopping has now led him to Malaysia.

It is not yet clear whether Sharma will be fit in time for that game. After the IPL, India are scheduled to tour Australia, and with Sharma being part of the team in all three formats, his fitness will be closely monitored.

Sir Jim Ratcliffe now readying drastic action to sign £35m star for Man Utd

Sir Jim Ratcliffe is ready to take drastic action to sign a star defender for Manchester United this summer.

Man Utd transfer for defender blocked

The Red Devils and INEOS are yet to make a marquee signing after deciding to keep Erik ten Hag as manager, although Ratcliffe has warned fans the club will need two or three summer windows to complete a rebuild of the playing squad.

"I don't think the solution is to buy an Mbappe. We are more grassroots than that. One player is not going to solve the problem at Manchester United. The first thing we need to do is build a balanced squad and ultimately maybe top it off with one or two players like Mbappe. It will take two or three summer windows to get to a better place.

One area where the club do want to bolster is at centre-back, with Raphael Varane officially leaving at the end of the month. One name that has been mentioned in recent months is Nice’s Jean-Clair Todibo, however, despite talks being at an advanced stage.

Fabrizio Romano recently revealed that a deal is off due to Nice and Man Utd having the same ownership and playing in the same European competition next season.

Ratcliffe hasn’t been left happy at not being able to sign Todibo for the Red Devils, saying: “UEFA said we can sell him to another PL club, but we can't sell to Man Utd. But that's not fair on the player, and I don’t see what that achieves.”

Ratcliffe now ready to take Nice action to sign Todibo

Now, according to a new update from Football Insider, Ratcliffe is ready to sell his stake in Nice in order to sign Todibo for Man Utd. They state that ‘Ratcliffe is now prepared to sell his controlling share in Nice in order to ease the restrictions around multi-club ownership’.

Nice centre-back Jean-Claire Todibo.

Ratcliffe and INEOS have been in control of Nice since 2019, and it remains to be seen if they will retain a minority stake in the Ligue 1 side, should they sell up.

It looks as if the new Man Utd co-owner is willing to go above and beyond for Todibo, valued at £35m, with the 24-year-old recently saying when asked about a move to Old Trafford: “It's nice to hear all the compliments. I'm trying to stay focused on my game and my team-mates – but for sure I am open to playing in the Premier League. 'I'm going to keep that for me! Nice try.”

The transfer saga for Todibo could drag on for months, especially if Ratcliffe needs to sell his majority stake in France, making this one to watch.
