West Ham showing ambition despite failure to secure Gomes

[ad_pod ]

According to The Sun, West Ham look set to miss out on Barcelona midfielder Andre Gomes as Everton appear to have secured a £22million deal.

What’s the deal, then?

The 25-year-old was on loan at Goodison Park last season where he was a first-team regular for much of the campaign as he made 27 Premier League appearances for the Toffees.

And The Sun also revealed that the Hammers missed out on the Portuguese international despite making a higher bid than Everton.

The London Stadium-based club offered the Catalan giants £25m to try and tempt Gomes away from Marco Silva, but he was adamant he wanted to remain where he’d spent all of the last campaign.

What’s refreshing to see is the level of player the east London club are now trying to attract.

The Irons have already signed Spanish international Pablo Fornals for £24m in what is a major coup given the promise that the 23-year-old has.

And the fact that they are bold enough to try and negotiate a deal with Manchester United over Issa Diop by demanding Anthony Martial shows how a side that finished 10th in the league last season is now standing up and demanding respect as a force to be reckoned with.

The Hammers may have been a little disappointed to miss out on Gomes, especially given their offer was the most lucrative, but it is not the be all and end all given they do already have options in midfield – Mark Noble, Declan Rice, Pedro Obiang, Jack Wilshere and Carlos Sanchez.

Gomes is known as a player who keeps the play ticking over and has a diverse range of passing – but actually Rice, who is known for his tackling and ability to break up the play more than anything else – had a higher pass completion rate last season – 86% compared with Gomes’ 84%.

Irrespective of what he would have added to the side, for many years the bee in Hammers fans’ bonnet was the lack of direction and willingness from the owners to step up the cash and push their club on towards the top bracket of English football.

Without question they have begun this transfer window as a club who is set on building a deep, talented squad who can push on to bigger and better things.

Should Leeds swoop for Ovie Ejaria?

[ad_pod ]

Leeds United have apparently entered the race to sign Ovie Ejaria, according to Reading Chronicle journalist Courtney Friday. The Liverpool man spent last season out on loan at both Rangers and Reading.

He left the Scottish giants after just a few months having struggled to settle, whereas his performances at Reading were promising if not exactly earth-shattering, producing one goal and two assists in 16 games.

Therefore, it comes as somewhat of a surprise that Leeds are chasing him, especially heading into a season where anything other than promotion would be regarded as failure for the Whites having come so close last year and managed to hang onto the services of Marcelo Bielsa.

Ejaria is a relatively unproven quantity with limited experience, but he could come good in a side where he feels more comfortable.

So, should Leeds swoop for Ejaria this summer? Three of Football FanCast’s writers give their verdicts on Leeds’ alleged interest in the 21-year-old below…

Matt Dawson

“Ejaria is a handy player and he showed as much on loan at Reading last season. His canny dribbling ability, completing 2.3 per match on average for the Royals, was impressive and if he’s to make an impact at Leeds that’s likely to be one of the main ways in which he does so. A loan deal would be decent business overall – a permanent move would be too much of a gamble at this largely unproven stage of his career – but Leeds will need a bit more from the youngster if they’re to achieve promotion, after he managed to find the net just once in the Championship throughout 2018/19.”

Billy Meyers

“I think this could be a smart signing by Leeds, although it definitely comes with some risks. Ejaria couldn’t settle at Rangers and while he simply may have got a bit unlucky in that instance, you have to question his mentality as well – elite players should be able to adapt and focus on their football. That being said, there is clearly some ability within him – Ejaria is a quick and powerful presence who played as both a winger and a central midfielder at times last season, so he’s got something to offer his apparent suitors. It’s just a case of whether Bielsa’s guidance can take him up to another, more consistent level.”

James Beavis

“Bielsa has shown in the past that even if you are arriving at Leeds from a high-profile club, you still have to earn your place in the starting XI. As an example, a season-long loan move for Chelsea’s Lewis Baker last summer failed to work out well with the 24-year-old deciding to leave United in January having failed to break into the side under the Argentine. Given Ejaria’s own temporary spell with Rangers was also ended early after he failed to settle in Glasgow, alarm bells should be ringing before the Yorkshire outfit consider bringing him to Elland Road this time around – one goal and two assists in 16 appearances in a separate spell with Reading in 2019 isn’t hugely encouring either.”

Arsenal fans react to reports Krystian Bielik wants summer exit

[ad_pod ]

After an impressive campaign on loan at Charlton that ended in a man-of-the-match display in the League One play-off final to earn the Addicks promotion, Krystian Bielik’s stock has never been higher.

The 21-year-old then proceeded to turn in some monumental displays at the U21 European Championships, netting in Poland’s opening two group stage games against Belgium and Italy.

However, after admitting in recent weeks that he would not entertain the prospect of returning to Arsenal’s youth sides, The Sun now claim Bielik is ready to leave the Emirates this summer in search of first-team football.

After hearing the latest update on their talented prospect, Gunners fans took to Twitter to vent their frustrations at seeing one of the side’s promising young players leave again.

Some fans of the north London side compared Bielik’s situation to Bayern Munich star Serge Gnabry and warned the club that they could once again regret making a similar decision.

Indeed, a few felt aggrieved that under-performing first-team players like Mohamed Elneny remained at the club whilst someone of Bielik’s potential was seemingly being allowed to go.

Danny Mills’ recent prediction outlines one key positive of new Leeds addition

[ad_pod ]

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Pundit View series, which provides opinion and analysis on recent quotes from journalists, pundits, players and managers…

Speaking to Football Insider, Danny Mills has made the bold claim that one of Liam Cooper or Pontus Jansson could potentially be dropped ahead of the start of the season following the signing of Ben White.

Although the quotes could be taken negatively as it alludes to Leeds leaving a key player out, there are still plenty of positives to be found.

What’s been said then?

The former England international claimed that one of Leeds’ centre-backs could be in jeopardy of losing their spot.

“There will be real competition for places now,” he said. “You could see Jansson and White starting together in central defence, or White and Cooper,” Mills told Football Insider,

“You need that competition. If there’s no competition for places, even the best can get complacent. We saw last season that Leeds were short in that position, and Kalvin Phillips had to drop back for a few months when Cooper was injured.

“Cooper is a good, steady player. He had some very good performances last season and the odd mistake here and there. He has improved a lot since he joined Leeds, but you have to keep improving every season. If you stand still, you go backwards.

“He could easily start the season on the sidelines, especially if he’s not performing to the level Bielsa wants in training.”

Key positive

Jansson and Cooper both arguably had the best seasons of their career last campaign as they earnt spots in the PFA Championship Team of the Year, but with more competition for their spot this term they may be forced to up their game even further.

Indeed, the Swede and the captain have become real fans’ favourites at Elland Road, but that doesn’t mean their places in the starting XI are secure.

Mills clearly rates White, and if he begins to play well in training, the current centre-half pairing will have to step things up in order to stay in the team.

In signing the Brighton youngster on loan, Marcelo Bielsa hasn’t only added depth to his squad, but he has also created some friendly competition that could see his current stars improve.

Manchester United fans disagree with Sir Alex Ferguson’s assessment of Harry Maguire

[ad_pod ]

Manchester United legend Sir Alex Ferguson believes the club should sign Leicester City defender Harry Maguire this summer, according to the Manchester Evening News.

The paper are not carrying quotes from the former Old Trafford boss but cite sources that claim Ferguson believes the Foxes defender is an “ideal signing” for the club.

United have already tried to sign the player this summer, with a reported £70m bid for the England international rejected last week.

Who is Man Utd’s worst ever player? Bebe? Eric Djemba-Djemba? The fan in the video below actually think it’s one of the Red Devils’ current crop…

Maguire has made over 100 Premier League appearances, but there are doubts about his ability to make the step up to a top six side that will push for UEFA Champions League qualification spots.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is currently in the middle of a squad revamp though and the recent bid suggests United’s recruitment team are intent on landing their man.

Many Man United fans aren’t too keen on his potential arrival and have taken issue with Sir Alex Ferguson’s reported opinion, taking to Twitter to share their thoughts this weekend…

Everton receive bid for Idrissa Gueye from PSG once again, fans react

[ad_pod ]

Lots of Everton fans have taken to Twitter to discuss Paris Saint-Germain rekindling their interest in Idrissa Gueye.

The Ligue 1 champions have submitted a €30m (£27m) bid for the 29-year-old midfielder, who is currently away at the Africa Cup of Nations with Senegal where his goal against Benin put them into the semi-finals.

Check out some amazing tekkers in the video below…

PSG were extremely keen to land the 5 foot 9 ace back in January, with their interest resulting in Gueye handing in a transfer request to try and force through a move to the Parc des Princes.

The Parisians offered £26.2m back in January, so it is fairly insulting of them to offer just £0.8m more a few months down the line for a player who is worth his weight in gold to the Toffees and Marco Silva.

In the modern day market, offering such a low figure for the former Aston Villa man who won Everton’s Player of the Season award is out of order from PSG, and is arguably a waste of everyone’s time.

Let’s see what the Everton fans on Twitter have said about the bid…

Southampton suffer blow in bid to sell Mario Lemina as Arsenal close on Dani Ceballos

[ad_pod ]

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Transfer Focus series, which provides opinion and analysis on recent transfer news…

Southampton have suffered another blow in their bid to offload Mario Lemina before the transfer window slams shut on August 8, with Arsenal agreeing a deal to sign Real Madrid midfielder Dani Ceballos on loan.

What’s the word, then?

According to The Telegraph, the south coast outfit want to sell the former Juventus man this summer, and as well as being omitted from the 26-man squad that travelled to Austria, he has also been excluded from the rest of the first-team squad at the club’s Staplewood training ground.

According to The Daily Mail, Arsenal, Leicester City and Manchester United were three of the teams to be keen on the Gabon international, but the Manchester Evening News has already ruled out the latter being interested in the 25-year-old, who they say is rated at £30m.

Watch Southampton Live Streams With StreamFootball.tv Below

Now the former have almost certainly been ruled out as well following their expected capture of Ceballos, with respected BBC journalist David Ornstein reporting earlier in the summer that a box-to-box midfielder was a priority target – the Spaniard certainly fits the bill.

Setback for Southampton

With just over two weeks until the transfer window closes, Saints’ bid to sell some of their highest-earning non first-team players hasn’t exactly gone to plan.

The Telegraph reported last month that they were keen on exits for the likes of Fraser Forster, Wesley Hoedt, Cedric Soares, Sofiane Boufal and Guido Carrillo, but all of them still remain at St Mary’s.

Charlie Austin and Lemina are two more that can also go, but no agreement appears to be on the horizon for either as they continue to train alone.

It is hardly the ideal situation for Ralph Hasenhuttl, who is already having to deal with a bloated squad, with the struggle to offload players potentially hampering the club’s chances of strengthening at centre-back – one of their remaining transfer priorities.

Lemina’s price tag may well need to be lowered with United and Arsenal now seemingly out of the running for him.

How Tottenham Hotspur could line up during 2019/20 PL opener

[long_read]

Tottenham Hotspur kick off the Premier League season at home against Aston Villa.

Mauricio Pochettino’s side, of course, reached the Champions League final in 2018/19 and also finished fourth in the top-flight, but they will surely be out to launch an assault on the title this time around.

Indeed, they have already broken their transfer record once to sign Tanguy Ndombele from Lyon and are being linked with more new arrivals: Giovani Lo Celso of Real Betis, Fulham’s Ryan Sessegnon and Juventus star Paulo Dybala are all said to be targets.

There could be plenty of upheaval to the starting XI that served Spurs so well last term, then, with Kieran Trippier the first to leave and Danny Rose also seemingly closing in on a departure.

Christian Eriksen’s future remains up in the air, too, after he confirmed he could leave earlier this summer, while Toby Alderweireld’s  £25m release clause expired last week.

There are a number of options then, for Pochettino to pick from as he bids to get the 2019/20 season underway with a win.

Football FanCast breaks down five possible XIs.

[snack_break title=”Dream XI”]

If all the major targets arrive in north London, Spurs could have four debutants on the opening day.

Ndombele, of course, is already in the bag and gave fans a glimpse of what they can expect by laying on an assist with his first touch in a pre-season friendly against Juventus.

A midfield containing him alongside Lo Celso and of course Moussa Sissoko in central midfield could bear plenty of fruit for the club after the former Newcastle United man’s resurgence last season.

Sessegnon coming in at left-back would add an extra dimension both to Spurs’ defence and attack, offering width that the diamond formation lacks in midfield.

Sitting at the tip of the diamond is Dybala himself, a player who will inject flair, charisma and a touch of imperious class into Spurs’ build-up play.

In an ideal world Alderweireld will stay at the club and Eriksen’s demotion to the bench will signal the beginning of a new era in which Pochettino will have the squad depth to fulfil his ambitions.

The Argentine could also begin his experiment with Juan Foyth at right-back following the departure of Trippier to Atletico Madrid.

If that sequence of events plays out, and Harry Kane and Heung-min Son start the season in full health, then this looks like a mightily strong XI.

[snack_break title=”Nightmare XI”]

Of course, there’s the opposite scenario.

Pochettino could decide against using Foyth at right-back and install the rash Serge Aurier instead.

Alderweireld could still depart if a club is willing to match Daniel Levy’s £40m asking price, leaving Davinson Sanchez and Jan Vertonghen at centre-back, with Rose at left-back if both his and Sessegnon’s transfers fall through

Harry Winks could come in for Ndombele in midfield if Pochettino does not feel the Frenchman is ready, while Lucas Moura could fill in for Eriksen if he leaves too.

If Lo Celso fails to arrive, then Dele Alli would be the No.10.

Now, this doesn’t look like the most nightmarish of XIs but it is also made up solely of players who featured throughout 2018/19.

Between them, they made a combined 429 appearances in all competitions last season alone.

Only Aurier made less than 20, while Sissoko, Winks, Lucas, Son and Kane all made 40 appearances or more.

Don’t expect much freshness from this lot on the opening day.

[snack_break title=”Progressive XI”]

Paulo Gazzaniga has enjoyed some exceptional displays in goal for Spurs and, with Hugo Lloris flying home from the pre-season tour due to injury, he could well be trusted on opening day.

Kyle Walker-Peters has been banging on the door for a first-team breakthrough for almost two years now and Pochettino could select him while installing Foyth in his preferred centre-back role.

Partnering the Argentine with Sanchez could be the beginning of a new defensive tandem, while Oliver Skipp could take another step towards becoming a first-team regular.

Adding Troy Parrott to the attack would require a formation shift but the 17-year-old could be worth the risk; he has been prolific at youth level, scoring 15 goals in 13 games for the Under-18s, and made his senior debut in a friendly against Juventus.

He could partner Kane up top.

Of course, there is a lot of youth in this XI but Pochettino has routinely shown he does not mind chucking youngsters into the fray if they’re good enough.

[snack_break title=”Attacking XI”]

If Pochettino fancies going for it and attempting to run up a cricket score against the newly-promoted Villans, he could employ a 3-4-3 formation that relies on wing-backs.

That would see Aurier and Davies almost join the steely midfield of Ndombele and Sissoko, providing width on the flanks.

Further forward, there would perhaps be no need for a playmaker, with Lucas, Son and Kane providing a ferocious amount of firepower themselves.

There would be the option of tweaking the system from the bench if Eriksen or, perhaps, Lo Celso were to come on.

But this is a system that sees Pochettino loading all of the bullets into the magazine and hoping it fires.

[snack_break title=”Defensive XI”]

Or there’s this.

A flat back five would see Foyth play on the right – Aurier can’t really be trusted in such a formation – and Davies on the left.

Two defensive midfielders would come into the middle in Eric Dier and Victor Wanyama, with Sissoko the ball-carrier.

That would then see Son join Kane up front as Spurs relied on rapid counter-attacking and quick transitions.

This is a viable option for Pochettino but it would feel a waste to use it against Villa, a team who are likely to sit back and invite Spurs to attack.

There is no need for the hosts to join them in that tactic.

Ex-Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho opens up on criticism of Old Trafford reign

[ad_pod ]

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Pundit View series, which provides opinion and analysis on recent quotes from journalists, pundits, players and managers…

Speaking to Sky Sports, Jose Mourinho has opened up on the level of criticism he received during his stint as Manchester United manager.

What did he say?

Mourinho took over the Red Devils in May 2016 and led the club to a League Cup and Europa League triumph in his first campaign. After then finishing his second season only behind champions Manchester City, United endured a difficult start to the 2018/2019 campaign and promptly sacked Mourinho in December of last year.

Now, the 56-year-old has revealed his dismay at what he felt was a certain lack of recognition for his achievements, but vowed to return to management with a “big smile”.

[ad_pod ]

He said: “I can just say that the Manchester United time was not an easy time. I always felt that to win the Europa League was fantastic and it didn’t look like it was, the way people approach it. To finish second was even more than that (success), so probably I was feeling a little bit like: ‘Wow, I’m working well, I’m giving everything and I’m not getting what I think that deserves’.

“The only thing I can promise you is that when I have the next club, the next project, I will be so, so happy that I will walk into that press conference with a big smile. That I can promise.”

Harshly judged?

After seeing Ole Gunnar Solskjaer fail to turn the ship around in the second half of the season, Mourinho’s time in charge may now be looked upon more favourably. The Portuguese boss has always been synonymous with trophies and he delivered two of those in his first campaign at the club.

To then finish second behind one of the greatest sides in Premier League history is certainly nothing to be sniffed at, and whilst the club struggled in the early stages of last season, it just felt like Mourinho had simply lost the dressing room by the end.

The task of the rebuilding job at hand at Old Trafford is clear for all to see, but Mourinho’s efforts in trying to raise the club from its Sir Alex Ferguson slumber should not be forgotten all too hastily.

Liverpool fans react negatively to Xherdan Shaqiri transfer claim

[ad_pod ]

According to respected journalist James Pearce, Xherdan Shaqiri’s presence at Anfield is one of the main reasons why Liverpool have decided against improving their attack in this summer’s transfer window.

Indeed, Pearce has claimed that Reds boss Jurgen Klopp feels that Shaqiri can have a big impact on the team during the 2019-20 campaign.

However, the report has not gone down very well with the club’s supporters, with many claiming that the Swiss did not show too much last term.

The 27-year-old arrived at Anfield in a £13m deal last summer having left Stoke City.

The versatile attacker made 30 appearances in all competitions – contributing six goals and five assists during a decent campaign.

[ad_pod ]

Shaqiri was overlooked on a number of occasions in the latter stages of the season, though, playing in just three of the team’s final 11 league fixtures.

A selection of the Twitter reaction from the upset Liverpool fans is available to view below:
