Alexis Mac Allister: Why Liverpool's multi-talented midfielder can break the Brighton curse and prove himself a bargain buy as he returns to the Amex

Ahead of Sunday's return to the south coast, the Argentine is still trying to prove he can be as influential at Anfield as he was at the Amex

Liverpool' Europa League win over Union Saint-Gilloise on Thursday night was a largely forgettable affair, albeit not for Ryan Gravenberch and Alexis Mac Allister. The former scored his first goal for his new club and so excited was he, that he described it as the best of his career so far.

It was arguably an even more momentous evening for Mac Allister, though, who was given the opportunity to share a field with his brother Kevin for the first time in a competitive clash. The pair even partook in a rather sweet post-match interview, with Kevin putting an arm around his younger sibling as he spoke of his pride at playing at Anfield with their father Carlos watching on from the stands.

Mac Allister is now set for another reunion at Brighton on Sunday but while the World Cup winner will doubtless welcome the chance to see plenty of familiar faces at the Amex, it's unlikely to be such a cordial affair. The stakes are going to be so much higher for everyone involved, and particularly Mac Allister.

GettyLiverpool's many midfield options

Truth be told, he's not even certain to start. It would certainly be a surprise if he were left on the bench after being called upon only as a substitute against Union SG. Mac Allister has, after all, started all seven of Liverpool's previous Premier League games this season. However, after looking so light on numbers in midfield when the season began, the Reds suddenly have several players vying for starting spots.

Dominik Szoboszlai will, of course, be one of the first names on Jurgen Klopp's teamsheet. The Hungarian has made a sensational start to life on Merseyside, quickly becoming a fan favourite with his all-action style.

Ryan Gravenberch arrived far later in the transfer window than Szoboszlai, on deadline day in fact, but he has hit the ground running.

As well as his aforementioned goal, the Dutchman has also contributed two assists and has staked a serious claim to start on the left-hand side of the midfield against Brighton, particularly with Curtis Jones suspended.

Mac Allister could, therefore, be tasked with the holding role, which he has already performed several times this season. He's not always impressed in front of the back four, though.

AdvertisementGetty ImagesMac Allister's miserable Wolves outing

He looked a little lost at times in the opening-day draw at Chelsea, but that was nothing compared to his struggles in the come-from-behind win at Wolves, with Mac Allister withdrawn at half-time.

In both instances, though, there were mitigating circumstances. The game at Stamford Bridge wasn't just a first competitive start for Mac Allister, making a certain degree of discomfort in a new team arguably inevitable, he was also done no favours from a defensive perspective by the selection of forward Cody Gakpo in a horribly unbalanced midfield.

At Molineux, meanwhile, Mac Allister was clearly suffering the ill-effects of a gruelling international break, which Klopp, to his credit, quickly recognised during the first half before flagging immediately after the game to spare the much-vaunted summer signing from a media-bashing.

(C)Getty ImagesEndo a better option at No.6?

Still, the feeling at Anfield on Thursday night was that Endo Wataru was withdrawn at half-time because he had already done enough during the opening 45 minutes to secure his place in the starting line-up for the game at Brighton.

The Japan international has taken a little time to get up to speed – which is wholly understandable, given he joined from Stuttgart after the season had started, coupled with the difficulty involved in getting to grips with the many responsibilities of a defensive midfielder in a Klopp team.

Endo, though, has shown clear signs of improvement and, as the only fully fit specialist 'six' in the squad, there is a lot to be said for starting the 30-year-old 'Dual King' at a ground where Liverpool were twice over-run last season.

There is, therefore, an opportunity to play Mac Allister in the more advanced role that his father prefers, the fluid, left-sided No.10 role he fulfilled so effectively for Argentina at Qatar 2022.

GettyA shame Caicedo didn't follow Mac Allister

Brighton boss Roberto De Zerbi argued that Mac Allister was such an intelligent footballer – "He understands the game before he gets the ball" – that he "can play anywhere", admitting that he particularly enjoyed deploying the 24-year-old in a "deeper" position because of his playmaking qualities.

However, if he were to be given such a role at Anfield, he would clearly need a ball-winner alongside him, which is why it's such a shame for both Mac Allister – and arguably Moises Caicedo – that the Ecuadorian elected to move to Chelsea rather than follow his former Brighton team-mate to Liverpool.

It has even been argued that both players will struggle to replicate their Amex form in their new homes because Brighton is such a special environment. The belief is that it's both the set-up and the system that allows young talents and previously unheralded journeymen to flourish on the south coast – and that once a player moves elsewhere, often for a colossal amount of money, they look like a fish out of water.

Certainly, some players have struggled after leaving, including Neal Maupay. Leandro Trossard is also only playing regularly for Arsenal right now because of an injury to Gabriel Martinelli, while it's taken Yves Bissouma more than a year to start showing why Spurs signed him from Brighton last year for £30m ($36m).

Egypt boss explains why Liverpool superstar Mohamed Salah is in Lionel Messi & Cristiano Ronaldo category when it comes to legacy

Mohamed Salah sits alongside Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo when it comes to leaving a lasting legacy in football, says Egypt’s national coach.

Egyptian forward starring in English footballIs also a talismanic presence for his countryHas made similar impact to two all-time greatsWHAT HAPPENED?

Rui Vitoria is in the fortunate position of working with the Liverpool superstar as the Pharaohs count down the days to another bid for Africa Cup of Nations glory. For all that he has achieved at club level – as a Premier League and Champions League winner – Salah has never claimed a continental crown with his country.

AdvertisementGettyWHAT THEY SAID

He has at least one more chance to put that right, with Vitoria telling of how Salah will be remembered alongside the modern greats: “Salah is very important in our national team. And these players, who are world figures, are in fact very important in the various teams they represent. We remember a Messi, we remember a Cristiano Ronaldo, we remember a Salah, maybe Neymar, [Kylian] Mbappe. The big teams have a player like this. And our Salah brings great positivity to the whole group. You feel this positive energy that is transmitted. You can feel the pride that a team also has in having a player like this. And the impact these players have on a daily basis is enormous. And sometimes they don’t even have that idea. But they raise the level of demand. And when I say demand, I mean demand from everyone. All coaches, colleagues, structures that have to be at a high level to also monitor the performance of those players. And this is a very big challenge even for Egypt. To have these types of players, we all have to raise our level of ability. But they are decisive.”

THE BIGGER PICTURE

Vitoria added on the qualities that Salah brings to the Egyptian camp: “Salah is a player I love on the pitch and I love off the pitch. Because he represents what I understand he should be as a player. Extreme humility, friendliness, very positive energy. A tremendous focus on his profession. Always concerned about colleagues and the team. And that makes me very satisfied. I’m glad we have him and he’s a decisive player.”

Salah has registered 51 goals and 29 assists through 91 appearances for Egypt and helped them to the World Cup finals in 2018. He has been in impressive form for Liverpool of late – with summer transfer speculation put behind him – and has found the target on six occasions while providing four assists in the 2023-24 campaign.

Romelu Lukaku returns to Inter: Football's most infamous mercenary set to feel the wrath of San Siro

The Belgian looked set to rejoin the Nerazzurri on a permanent transfer during the summer, but was secretly trying to secure a move to Juventus

Jose Mourinho has been at it again this week. In between expressing his astonishment at being sent off for mocking Monza's coach last Sunday, he has been feigning surprise at the furore surrounding Romelu Lukaku's imminent return to San Siro.

"I didn't think Lukaku was so important in Milan," the Roma coach told reporters on Wednesday. "What Romelu did in Milan – winning a Scudetto and some cups – has been done by 200 players in the history of Inter.

"So, it's interesting: Lukaku [moving] from Inter to Roma to help his coach (Mourinho) is a drama. But (Hakan) Calhanoglu from AC Milan to Inter is a marvel. And (Fabio) Cannavaro from Inter to Juventus or (Christian) Vieri from Inter to Milan, no problem.

"But Lukaku from Inter to Roma has become something that scares me, because I didn't think Lukaku had such an important place in the heart of a club like Inter. It surprises me."

Mourinho, though, knows exactly why the entire build-up to Sunday's Serie A game is focused on Lukaku. The Belgian was meant to be wearing Inter's colours at San Siro – not the red of Roma – and the way in which Lukaku went from one to the other remains a very hot topic at La Pinetina.

Getty Images'He who betrayed our jersey'

Mourinho has already tried to make light of the situation, arguing back in September on that "Inter have no reason to be angry [with Lukaku] because… they already have an extraordinary team, with many attackers. They should be happy for their former coach, who really needed Romelu."

However, Inter fans don't love Mourinho that much. Their enduring affection for the charismatic manager that led them to a historic treble in 2010 won't in any way, shape or form take the edge off what is expected to be a vitriolic expression of hatred for a player that broke their hearts not once – but twice. Indeed, Inter ultras have been waiting for this game ever since the fixture list for the 2023-24 campaign came out.

"October 29 is a date we should circle in the calendar so we can be ready to let him hear all our disgust that we feel towards someone who turned his back on us in the most shameful way," the Curva Nord group said in a statement. "A character who proved himself to be a small man because before being a champion, you must be a man and know how to keep your word. We defended you with swords drawn and you repaid us by turning your back.

"Before the game against Roma, the Curva Nord will hand out 50,000 whistles to be used at every touch of the ball from he who betrayed our jersey. Let us all show how someone who proved himself unworthy to wear this shirt ought to be treated."

AdvertisementGetty Images'It was a moment to be silent'

The fans' fury is undeniably understandable. Lukaku recently claimed that "everyone would be shocked" if they knew the truth about what went down during the summer and that there were moments in which he was so upset by the "rubbish" being reported in the press that he felt like he was going to "explode".

Yet he refused to shed any light on the supposedly extenuating circumstances surrounding his shock decision to pull out of a transfer to Inter in the most disrespectful fashion possible.

"It was a moment to be silent and focus on myself," he said. "I concentrated on what I can do well: play football." Consequently, nothing new has been added to the narrative. The story remains the same.

Only July 14, Inter agreed – after lengthy negotiations with Chelsea that were assisted by Lukaku's representatives, Roc Nation Sports – to make the striker's loan stay at San Siro permanent for €35 million plus €5m in add-ons – which was quite the investment for the cash-strapped Nerazzurri.

But then, when they tried to contact Lukaku, nothing. Despite numerous attempts, via various mediums, Inter's management team couldn't reach the forward – or his lawyer, Sebastien Ledure. Even Lukaku's closest friends in the San Siro dressing room were given the same silent treatment.

Getty Images'Are you sure he wants to join you?'

According to the , though, there had been warning signs that Lukaku, despite all of his previous public proclamations of love for Inter and the city Milan, had gone cold on the deal. Neither he nor his lawyer had "over-extended" themselves during the transfer talks. He'd also stopped responding to Whatsapp messages and texts from team-mates.

Most tellingly of all, Chelsea's negotiating team had even asked their Inter counterparts on the morning of the agreement, "Are you sure he wants to join you?" Word of a U-turn had got back to the Blues – but not Inter, who then spent the following hours scrambling around trying to find out what was going on. Serie A rivals Juventus and AC Milan both confirmed that they had spoken with Lukaku's representatives.

Inter were furious, particularly as the secret talks with Juve were so far advanced. Club president Steven Zhang and his directors agreed to immediately sever all ties with Lukaku and his team.

When Lukaku belatedly spoke with Piero Ausilio over the phone, the conversation lasted 30 seconds, the Inter sporting director reportedly informed the attacker that the deal was dead and the club no longer wanted anything to do with him.

GettyThrowing his toys out of the pram

It was a view shared by Simone Inzaghi's squad. Amid talk of the transfer being resurrected later in the window, after Chelsea and Juventus failed to agree a player-plus-cash deal involving Lukaku and Dusan Vlahovic, Inter's most influential players, Lautaro Martinez, Nicolo Barella, Federico Dimarco and Alessandro Bastoni, made it clear that their former friend was no longer welcome in the dressing room.
As for Inzaghi, he's refused to criticise Lukaku, saying only that he was "an excellent signing" for Roma, who took the No.9 on loan with a view to a permanent £37m move next summer.

But it's clear that the coach's decision to start Edin Dzeko alongside Martinez in last season's Champions League final upset Lukaku enormously – and that's understandable. Lukaku was the man in form and it was obvious even before the game that he would give Pep Guardiola's defenders more trouble than the veteran Bosnian.

Still, Inzaghi has argued that his game plan to subdue City before trying to hit them with a second-half sucker-punch almost worked perfectly. Certainly, had Lukaku taken one of two great chances that came his way after being brought off the bench, Inter would have deservedly forced extra-time.

Furthermore, Inzaghi pushed his employers to sign Lukaku on a permanent basis. He wanted him at San Siro this season, making Lukaku's U-turn look like an ill-advised act of petulance.

Earps made a costly error in England's clash with the Dutch at Wembley on Friday, allowing the visitors to take a 2-0 lead in a game that the Lionesses absolutely had to win to keep their UEFA Women's Nations League campaign alive. Goals from Georgia Stanway, Lauren Hemp and Ella Toone meant the European champions completed an incredible second half comeback but their chances of progressing to the finals of the competition are not straight-forward after a victory by just a one-goal margin.

Speaking to ITV after the game, Earps said: "I'm sorry my performance cost the girls like that. That will haunt me for a long time. I've really let the team down today. I'm really gutted."

However, Wiegman dismissed those comments in her press conference, telling reporters: "I don’t want her to talk like that, because you win as a team and lose as a team. She didn’t let the team down. Everyone does their best. You only let your team down when you don’t put effort in."

THE BIGGER PICTURE

England's 3-2 win means their hopes of making the Nations League finals are still alive – just. It is likely that the Lionesses will need to beat Scotland heavily on Tuesday in their final group stage match in order to progress to the next round, which would keep the chances of Great Britain being able to send a women's team to next summer's Olympics alive, too. The permutations are extensive, though, with Belgium playing the Netherlands at the same time.

Erik Ten Hag's side won the match 2-1 thanks to a Scott McTominay double on either side of a Cole Palmer strike. The Blues boss revealed that he was not worried about the loss and said that the result came down to his side lacking the same energy compared to Manchester United. The Argentine said his team were tired on after having to contend with Brighton on the weekend with only 10 men after captain Conor Gallagher was sent off.

AdvertisementWHAT POCHETTINO SAID

In the post-match press conference, the Argentine said: "I'm not worried because there's too many circumstances which need to explain why we didn't perform, to play with Brighton with one less for so long may have affected the energy, and we need to recover too many players from injury, to have different options and be more competitive.

"That's not an excuse, only that they were better. In which percentage? Maybe 10 per cent, but we need to be focused, recover the players and get ready for Sunday. We miss players, we played nearly with the same players we faced Brighton with, and we were a man down for 60 minutes. Manchester United had a day more to prepare, and we had many young players on our bench. It's not an excuse, but that's the reality."

"I'm not disappointed because we gave everything, but we didn't match the energy or aggressiveness. We created chances, maybe enough to draw the game."

Chelsea have already lost more games this season than they have won, and they now sit only one point closer to the Champions League spots as compared to the relegation zone. As Liverpool intensifies its search for Klopp's successor, the club has identified Ruben Amorim and Julian Nagelsmann as potential alternatives should Alonso decline the managerial role, according to Amorim, 39, has emerged as a compelling option thanks to his success in revitalising Sporting CP's title ambitions after winning it in 2021. However, he has a contract with Sporting until 2026 and Liverpool might have to shell out a hefty compensation fee to bring him on board.

Meanwhile, Nagelsmann, 36, is another intriguing prospect and since his contract with the German Football Association (DFB) ends after the upcoming European Championship, he is a relatively easier option to pursue. Despite leaving Bayern on a sour note, Nagelsmann's coaching acumen remains highly regarded at Liverpool. Moreover, his profile aligns with the club's ethos of identifying potential managerial candidates relative to squad performance and spending – the same blueprint that they allegedly followed while signing Klopp back in 2015.

Brooks, who has been brilliant at club level for Hoffenheim this season, has not appeared for the USMNT in nearly three years, with his last cap coming in September, 2021. However, his inclusion on the preliminary roster means that U.S. Soccer are no longer ignoring him, and that his experience could be vital this summer.

Kochen, meanwhile, is one of the biggest surprise inclusions but it's a sign that the USA are ready to fight for the 17-year-old Barcelona product who is a dual-national and eligible for Venezuela, Peru, Spain and the USMNT.

With seven total goalkeepers on the roster, it's unlikely that Kochen gets the nod from Gregg Berhalter, but it's a positive sign for the youngster.

The biggest note for USMNT fans, though, is the inclusion of Tyler Adams. Their captain at the 2022 FIFA World Cup, and arguably the most talented midfielder available, could finally return. He's been sidelined for nearly a year now, after suffering a season-ending injury with Leeds United last spring – and then re-aggravating the injury, causing a necessary surgery, last fall for Bournemouth.
