Liverpool fans fume at David Lynch claim

A number of Liverpool supporters are fuming after journalist David Lynch claimed that the Reds won’t sign anyone in the January transfer window.

Jurgen Klopp’s side drew 2-2 away to Chelsea on Sunday afternoon as a memorable Premier League encounter played out at Stamford Bridge.

Liverpool blew a two-goal lead in west London, and while the result was still far from terrible, more valuable ground was lost to Manchester City in the title race.

Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mane and Naby Keita will now all depart for the Africa Cup of Nations, potentially heightening the need for new signings to be made.

That doesn’t appear to be the case, however, with Lynch telling Anfield Watch [via LFC Transfer Room on Twitter] that the Reds are ‘pretty adamant’  that signings won’t be made this month.

'I still can't believe it' – Waqar Younis

Pakistan’s coach Waqar Younis said he “couldn’t believe” his team had lost to Australia in the final over of their World Twenty20 semi-final

Cricinfo staff14-May-2010Pakistan’s coach Waqar Younis was still in a state of shock soon after his team’s loss to Australia in the final over of their World Twenty20 semi-final. The Australians began the 20th over needing another 18 runs off Saeed Ajmal, but after three sixes and a four from Michael Hussey, the match finished with a ball to spare. It was a remarkable result given the nature of the chase; Australia were set 192 and slumped to 105 for 5 in the 13th over. That left Cameron White (43 off 31 balls) and Hussey in charge of the rescue, and Hussey’s unbeaten 60 from 24 deliveries was the key.”All you can do is just smile about it,” Waqar said. “I thought we did our best. What else can you do? I don’t think we went wrong anywhere. We did a good job, but you’ve just got to give credit to the Australians for the way they batted. They kept the momentum with them all the way, especially Cameron White’s innings.”I thought that set the tone, and then Hussey did the real damage. I still can’t believe it. It was an unbelievable innings; you just don’t see many like that around. I can’t really blame anyone. I thought we bowled pretty well and batted outstandingly. It’s just that the Australians were too good for us today.”The result eliminated Pakistan, the defending champions, from the tournament and set up an Australia-England final in Barbados on Sunday. Waqar said the depth of Australia’s batting – Hussey and Steven Smith have been coming in at No. 7 and 8 – made them a very fine side, although he felt there was room for improvement in their bowling.”We’ve seen a great game here, and I’m looking forward to another thriller in the final,” he said. “England are on top of their form. It’s just a matter of holding your nerves in the final. But the way Australia played today, they are very dangerous.”When you have such momentum with you it’s always handy. They played like champions. They haven’t won the Twenty20 yet, but this is their opportunity – and I think they’re going to come really hard at the English team.”

Jack Brooks helps Northamptonshire win

Yorkshire suffered a 14-run defeat to Northamptonshire under the Duckworth-Lewis method in their Friends Provident t20 clash at Headingley – but the home side were struggling even before the weather closed in

13-Jun-2010
ScorecardYorkshire suffered a 14-run defeat to Northamptonshire under the Duckworth-Lewis method in their Friends Provident t20 clash at Headingley – but the home side were struggling even before the weather closed in. Replying to the Steelbacks’ modest 151 for 7 the hosts were 51 for 4 after 7.5 overs and falling well behind the required rate.Yorkshire’s innings started badly when Jacques Rudolph fell to a great diving catch at long on in the first over from Chaminda Vaas and it became 16 for two as skipper Andrew Gale drove to wide mid-off and become the first of three victims for paceman Jack Brooks.Herschelle Gibbs moved to 19 with a straight six off Brooks but steered his next ball into the hands of wicketkeeper Niall O’Brien and although Anthony McGrath looked in sound form batting became increasingly difficult in dreadful light. Gerard Brophy held out his bat at Brooks to give O’Brien another catch but before new batsman Jonny Bairstow could face his first ball the rain came down and soon waterlogged the ground, man-of-the-match Brooks finishing with 3 for 24.Northamptonshire, who chose to bat first, were given a fine start by Lou Vincent and Vaas, who figured in an opening stand of 49 inside six overs, the Kiwi top-scoring with 38 off 31 balls with two fours and two sixes. Steve Patterson broke the partnership by having Vaas caught for 20 by Gale who held on to a fierce drive as he flung himself to his left at deep mid-on.From that point on, the initiative swung Yorkshire’s way as a result of some good bowling, particularly from Adil Rashid and Richard Pyrah who put a stranglehold on the overs in the middle of the innings. Once again Rashid was in excellent form with his leg-spin and he claimed three wickets for the third consecutive match while giving away only 23 runs.Pyrah was even more economical, conceding just 19 runs from his four overs. He also captured the all-important wicket of Vincent with a great ball which seamed away and found the edge before ending up in the gloves of wicketkeeper Brophy. Andrew Hall scored a valuable unbeaten 31 off 19 balls with four boundaries and Willey added late impetus to the innings with two fours and a six in his 19 which came from a dozen deliveries.

Matt Doherty backed for Wolves return

Even though Wolves’ technical director Scott Sellars recently played down the prospect of major spending from the Midlands club during the current January transfer window, one potential deal that they could realistically pull off in the coming weeks would be to bring Matt Doherty back to Molineux from fellow Premier League club Tottenham Hotspur.

Earlier this month, it was reported by Football Insider that Wolves had expressed an interest to Spurs that they would like to sign the Irishman this month.

Since then, journalist Pete O’Rourke has said that Doherty “would seriously consider” joining Bruno Lage’s squad and leaving the north London club.

Since joining Spurs back in the 2020 summer transfer window in a deal worth a reported fee of £14.7m, Doherty has made 41 appearances across all competitions with only 21 of them coming in the Premier League, suggesting that he has not been a first-choice player for the Lilywhites, especially with just four appearances and no starts in the league this season.

During his time as a Wolves player in which he said he felt “privileged” by, loving life at Molineux, the 29-year-old racked up a total of 302 appearances across all competitions, with an impressive return of 28 goals and 41 assists along the way.

Wolves’ current right-wing back Nelson Semedo has been in impressive form in the Premier League so far this season, earning himself an overall performance rating of 6.77/10, making him their fifth-highest rated outfield player according to WhoScored.

That said, Lage could still strike gold by luring Doherty back to Wolves this month to give some competition to the Portuguese international in that position and depth for Lage in case of any potential injuries.

It would also presumably please plenty of Wolves fans to see Doherty back at Molineux given his experience of playing for them and helping them come up from the Championship to the Premier League.

Labelled as a “superb” player for his previous efforts in a Wolves shirt by Danny Mills, the £10.8m-rated defender could potentially receive a hero’s welcome this month if he were to move back to Molineux.

Wolves and Lage should definitely approach Tottenham in the coming weeks to see if they would be willing to let Doherty go for a reasonable fee. After all, the idea of him returning to the Midlands is a sweat one.

Everton could revive Dele Alli’s career

Everton could create a formidable attacking partnership by partnering Dele Alli with Dominic Calvert-Lewin…

What’s the story?

Reports in recent days have suggested that the Toffees have got their sights set on the Spurs star, and that Rafa Benitez’s side could well make a move for the England international later on in the January transfer window.

Imagine him and Calvert-Lewin

While Alli hasn’t enjoyed the greatest of times at Spurs in the past couple of seasons, his partnership with Harry Kane when the duo were in full flight was something to behold.

In fact, as per Transfermarkt, the duo have combined for a whopping 33 goals between them ie. directly setting each other up for goal – which is by far the highest of any teammate Alli has had in his career thus far.

His ability to break into the box and get on the end of things is what led former Spurs man Darren Anderton to previously suggest that Alli was comparable to the likes of Steven Gerrard and Paul Scholes in terms of his talent.

He said: “I’ve got to say that I loved Stevie G as a player and Scholesy but Dele Alli for his age is just a freak of a talent. I love his arrogance on the pitch, how clever he is in finding the positions that he does and his willingness to try everything. He is a real joy to watch.”

And, more recently, former Scotland boss Alex McLeish tipped him to enjoy a renaissance, saying: “In those days he was looking like an absolute wonderkid then all of a sudden it plateaued and then dipped. Hopefully, he’s coming back up the hill again. Back in the day, I thought he was a kid of enormous talent and was going to be an absolute superstar.

“That’s not quite happened yet but there’s still a chance for him to resurrect his career and be that superstar. His recent form with Tottenham has been excellent.”

With another leading England striker in the ranks on Merseyside in Calvert-Lewin, Alli could thrive in that support striker role that saw him flourish alongside Kane.

Calvert-Lewin and Alli could work off each other both with their ability in the air, and their movement inside the box – the kind of double act that could fire Everton up the table.

The £100k-a-week earning star could well replicate his old partnership with Kane at Spurs, by teaming up with Calvert-Lewin at Goodison Park.

Meanwhile, Everton are considering a swoop for this Premier League outcast…

Alex Blake ensures Kent overcome Scotland

A career-best unbeaten 81 by rookie allrounder Alex Blake helped Kent secure their first home win of the season with a comfortable 58-run Clydesdale Bank 40 success over Scotland at Canterbury

31-May-2010
ScorecardA career-best unbeaten 81 by rookie allrounder Alex Blake helped Kent secure their first home win of the season with a comfortable 58-run Clydesdale Bank 40 success over Scotland at Canterbury.Blake, 21, went to the wicket with his side in a spot of bother on 108 for 4, a situation that quickly worsened when in-form Darren Stevens drove on the up against Ross Lyons to go for 24 and make it 113 for 5. That brought together Blake, playing only his 13th list A game, and the experienced Azhar Mahmood for a sixth-wicket stand worth 102 in 24 overs that turned the course of the game.Having won the toss and elected to field in cool, overcast conditions, Scotland’s attack nipped the ball around and performed well to winkle out Kent’s top five inside the opening 24 overs. After an opening stand of 45 between internationals Joe Denly and Rob Key, Denly blotted his copybook by missing an attempted slashing drive against Gordon Drummond to be bowled for 24.Martin van Jaarsveld had his off stump plucked out by an off-cutter from Richie Berrington and, in the following over, Key worked across a straight one from Majid Haq and also had his stumps rearranged. Stevens and Geraint Jones added 47 for the fourth wicket but when both fell in the space of two overs Kent were in danger of becoming Scotland’s second county scalp of the campaign following their shock away win over Leicestershire a fortnight ago.But Blake, with eight fours and a cover-driven six in his 56-ball innings, joined forces with Mahmood, who clattered 44 from 41 balls, to bat the visitors out of the game and take Kent to a respectable 249 at a scoring rate of 6.22 an over.Scotland’s reply floundered from the off against the pace of Makhaya Ntini, on his last appearance for Kent, and the wiles of Mahmood. He knocked back Omer Hussain’s off stump in the second over and then Ntini bowled Gavin Hamilton to finish his eight over stint with one for 28.Simon Cook then took two wickets in as many overs on his way to figures of two for 50, he trapped Gregor Maiden leg before and had Berrington caught at slip off an edged drive.Scotland regrouped through George Bailey, with a 57-ball 50, and Neil McCallum who added 93 for the fifth wicket but much to the detriment of the required run-rate, which had escalated to 14.5 by the time Bailey went for 70, bowled around his legs by Khan when attempting a leg-side clip. Then, when McCallum holed out in Khan’s next over Scotland’s outside hopes of causing an upset went with him.

Rangnick must sign Ousmane Dembele

Manchester United have not made much progress so far in their winter transfer window, despite many players being linked to the club over the first two weeks, but Ralf Rangnick could be set to make his first star signing as manager at Old Trafford.

Rangnick’s side have been struggling to get results in the Premier League since the new year began, with a defeat at home in their first game of the year against Wolves, and drawing in their second league game of 2022 with Aston Villa after losing a two-goal lead on Saturday evening.

These results and a clear lack of determination to see games out will only put more pressure on the interim manager to make signings who can make a positive impact and offer the side the quality they need to climb into the top four as they compete with West Ham United, Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur for a Champions League qualifying place.

One player that could save Rangnick’s six months in charge at Old Trafford, is Ousmane Dembele who was hailed “better than Mbappe” by Barcelona president, Joan Laporta, recently.

The 24-year-old forward has not been playing a lot for the La Liga giants with only six appearances in the league this season so far due to a knee injury, and has been linked with a move to Manchester United this week, with the £287k-per-week gem out of contract in the summer, so a cut-price deal could be available if Rangnick feels it would be worth stepping up on the signings this month.

Dembele has a fantastic goal involvement record at Barcelona, despite only playing 58 minutes on average per game for the club so far, with a goal or assist every 141 minutes according to Transfermarkt.

Someone with consistent output would be a great addition to the Manchester United forward line, with the creative possibilities endless for the French attacker if he was to play alongside the second-highest goalscorer in the history of football, Cristiano Ronaldo.

Fans would also love to see Dembele add attacking depth at Old Trafford, with one fan even tweeting:

“What is the solution to make Man United a great club? Sign Dembele.”

Rangnick will be looking to find a way to get the fans back on side after some turned on the manager after the Aston Villa game on Saturday evening, so signing a star offensive player like Dembele could be a good way to get back in the good books of the fanbase for the German coach.

Kevin O'Brien leads Ireland to title

Ireland overcame setbacks at the start of each innings to ensure they were not upset by Scotland in the final of a tournament they have dominated

Cricinfo staff10-Jul-2010
Scorecard and ball-by-ball detailsKevin O’Brien missed a hundred but was instrumental in Ireland’s victory•Getty ImagesIreland overcame setbacks at the start of each innings to ensure they were not upset by Scotland in the final of a tournament they have dominated. Having entered the summit clash of the ICC WCL Division 1 tournament with five consecutive group-stage wins, Ireland had to regain ground lost to Scotland’s openers, and they did by restricting the total to 233. Their batsmen then had to recover from a top-order wobble and they did, reaching the target in the 45th over.Scotland rued the waste of the terrific opening stand between Fraser Watts and Preston Mommsen. They scored half-centuries and had added 141 by the 31st over but eight out of the nine other batsmen were dismissed in single digits during a dramatic collapse. Scotland lost ten wickets for 91 runs and let Ireland back in the game, following which a 160-run partnership – the highest of the tournament – between Kevin O’Brien, who later picked up his third Man-of-the-Match award of the tournament, and Andrew White during the chase ended the contest.Watts and Mommsen chose the bowlers they wanted to attack, playing Trent Johnston with caution but going after most of the others. They scored briskly, setting up a launch pad for their team-mates, before Mommsen edged O’Brien to the keeper, who grabbed it on the second attempt. In the 33rd over, Scotland suffered a double blow: Omer Hussain was squared up by O’Brien and edged behind, while Richie Berrington was run out for a duck. Scotland were 145 for 3.Johnston and left-arm spinner George Dockrell ripped out Scotland’s middle order, taking two wickets apiece to reduce the innings from 163 for 3 to 169 for 7. There was some resistance from Watts and Gordon Drummond, who made 30 off 26 balls, the the advantage had been ceded. Watts holed out to long on in the penultimate over and fell two short of a century and the innings ended the next ball, when Gordon Goudie was bowled by Jones, leaving seven deliveries unused.Scotland’s stock rose during the chase when three wickets fell for 14 runs to leave Ireland rocking on 51 for 3. O’Brien, however, took the fight to his opponents by pulling his second ball, from Berrington, over the square-leg boundary. He hit another six over square leg later in his innings and a third into the trees beyond cow corner. He and White steadied the innings and did not allow any pressure to build by finding the boundary regularly. White hit four fours in the space of 11 balls during his innings before eventually falling for 79, with Ireland needing only 22 for victory. As Ireland approached Victory, O’Brien approached his century. However, with nine runs needed, John Mooney swung Matthew Parker over his head for six, leaving O’Brien on 96 with the strike at the start of the 47th over with only three runs needed. He took, a single, Mooney took another and, with only one to get, O’Brien took a single down the ground to finish on 98.

Inzamam willing to be Pakistan's batting coach

Inzamam-ul-Haq, former captain and Pakistan’s second highest run-scorer in Tests, has offered his services as a full-time batting coach to the national team

Cricinfo staff01-Aug-2010Inzamam-ul-Haq, former captain and Pakistan’s second highest run-scorer in Tests, has offered his services as a full-time batting coach to the national team. Pakistan’s batsmen are struggling on a tour of England, where they were dismissed for 182 in the first innings at Trent Bridge and are 15 for 3 in the second.”The team definitely needs a full-time batting coach and, if any offer is made to me for this position, I will definitely give it serious consideration,” Inzamam told. “They need a batting coach to guide them and it is a responsibility I would look at accepting because Pakistan cricket has given me a lot,” Inzamam told . Pakistan already have in their coaching staff former batsman Ijaz Ahmed, who doubles up as a batting and fielding coach. The Pakistan batsmen also struggled in the two Tests against Australia in England. They lost heavily at Lord’s but managed to draw the series by winning at Headingley after their bowlers dismissed Australia for 88 in the first innings. Their batsmen, however, were unconvincing during the chase of a small target.”The batsmen are not playing with the required technique and temperament,” Inzamam said. “They lack patience and get out after scoring 20 to 30 runs, which is not good enough for Test matches.”Inzamam said the selectors should also consider the retired Mohammad Yousuf and Younis Khan, who is out of favour at the moment, for the Test side. “Even a good batsman requires a year or so in Test cricket to settle down and play long innings. I would advise the selectors to try out a combination of senior and young players. And they should use Younis and Yousuf.”

West Brom dealt Muriqi transfer blow

West Bromwich Albion appear to have been dealt a setback in their bid to bring Vedat Muriqi to The Hawthorns in the January transfer window.

What’s the talk?

That’s according to a claim made by Fabrizio Romano, with the transfer insider relaying the quotes of Lazio director Igli Tare on Twitter, who seemed to suggest that the 27-year-old centre-forward will not be leaving the Serie A side in the current market.

In his tweet, Romano said: “Vedat Muriqi won’t join CSKA Moscow, Lazio director Igli Tare says: “It was fake news. He’s not joining CSKA Moscow.”

Aside from CSKA Moscow, previous reports had also suggested that Valerien Ismael’s Albion side were interested in a move for the Kosovo international this month, while both Leeds United and Hull City have also been credited with an interest in Muriqi.

However, with Tare stating quite intently that news of the club’s striker potentially leaving Rome is ‘fake’, a move elsewhere could now also be off the cards, including to the Hawthorns.

Fans will be buzzing

While it is undeniable that Muriqi’s return of goals during his seven and a half year spell in Turkey was impressive, considering how poor the striker has been since making a big-money move to Lazio back in the summer of 2020, the news that the Kosovan looks unlikely to be leaving Italy this month is sure to have left Baggies fans buzzing.

Indeed, over his 246 appearances for the likes of Giresunspor, Genclerbirligi Ankara, Caykur Rizespor, Fenerbahce, KF Teuta and KS Besa Kavaje, the £12.5m-rated man scored 81 goals and registered 23 assists – not far off making a direct goal contribution every other game.

However, since his £17.93m move to Lazio, the £52k-per-week striker has failed to hit anywhere near these heights, having bagged just two goals and provided two assists over his 49 appearances in all competitions for I Biancocelesti.

As such, when taking into account Muriqi’s extremely hefty weekly wage, in addition to the fact that the 27-year-old has proven he does not have what it takes to make it in one of Europe’s big five leagues, the news that the Kosovan will not be leaving Italy for The Hawthorns this winter is undoubtedly fantastic news for everyone involved with the Baggies.
